Awesome video, Dash. Couple things this video shows: 1. This video confirms other compound bow speed test by ExtremeOutfitters using a 70lb bow at 30" and a 1000 grain arrow (~15 JPP). Using multiple bow manufacturers they consistently got speeds of 190 FPS - 200 FPS. You getting 191 FPS with a similar 15 JPP arrow is consistent with their findings. 2. 1500 Grains going 191 FPS is ~165 Joules. 160 Joules seems to be a reasonable starting point for energy needed to consistently defeat hardened plate with shape. Way of Archery seems to demonstrate that 120J+ is enough for flat plates that you'd find in Brigandine/Lamellar, Ironskin has demonstrated that without using a specific needle bodkin you need at least 100+J to reliably defeat chainmail, and Fateful Force has demonstated that with a needle Bodkin potentially as low as ~50J can defeat chainmail. 3. This also shows that compound bows, instead of shooting super lightweight arrows like you'd see recommended on channels like ElkShape, but rather shooting period correct arrow weights could serve as a solid analog for testing purposes. If a 70lb compound bow can shoot a 1000 grain arrow 195 fps, that's probably a close equivalent to a 130lbs longbow or a 120lbs composite hornbow bow. Both of which would probably be ELITE for battlefield usage rather than exercise usage. Keep up the great work. Also, could you image Dequitem vs FitFrHome in armored Melee?

Since the modern arrows and traditionel arrows are of about the same length and wight, you should be able to shoot the traditional arrows with the compound bow and the modern arrows with the traditional bows. Doing so would show if it is mostly the compound bow that is more powerful, or if it is mostly the modern arrow that is more powerful or a combination of both.

I feel the penetration of the compound bow might be aided by the cutting tip. Yes, the bodkin are made for punching through armour but they weren't made of the best steel and the geometry is made to compensate for that. The hunting tip has less drag than the bodkin if it can cut the material it is up against and the modern hunting tip is good steel and will (obviously) cut through steel too. A shame you didn't get the speed foor the other arrows, might have been the sun confusing the sensor. The compound bow with 200J is pretty presentable.
@dashrendar53208 күн бұрын
I believe you may be right, especially with the speed they are traveling at and the weight of the arrow. It was surprising to me to see, but those arrowheads are also very custom designed to be the best possible so I think they are far superior quality to the bodkins I use as well.

Having built my arrows from the ground up, I appreciate your efforts to craft them as perfectly possible. The woods of E Texas, where I live in, is heavily populated with mature cedars. I dowel them out and spine match and weight match them as well. I invest roughly 8 hours per shaft for my custom ones. Even the stump shooters take 2 hours each to build. I don't buy shafts. Everybody I know think I'm nuts to scratch build my own, but the satisfaction of the end result is worth it to me. So when I see one of your arrows shatter I cringe a bit. 😬😟

I have a similar chronograph, and I believe that the angle of the sun was casting the shadow off to the left of the sensors, and that's why you weren't getting readings. Ps….. compound bows are not meant to be shot with your fingers…. They are perfectly calibrated with the cams and limbs to only be pulled from one small center point on the string. A thing called a d-loop. The cams and string need to stay perfectly straight or risk catastrophic failure of the bow. For your tests i can see it being fine, but for real accuracy you cant use your fingers. And if that string ever flies off the bow and it explodes, you know why.
@dashrendar53206 күн бұрын
I spoke directly with the owner of APA Archery as they sent it to me to test and I spoke to him at length about that. He said it’s completely fine to use your fingers so I would trust him.

@@dashrendar5320 ok maybe its with that bow maybe. I know ive learned that was a bad thing and potentially dangerous. I have seen bows throw there string. Not fun. Im also mainly talking about accuracy like hitting a target 10 inches at 60 yards.

Love the videos Dash, but the intro was HARD for me...not sure if it comes through on your editing mix but for stereo viewers, during the intro, the dialogue is entirely in the left ear. had me worried my headphones died on me for a second :)

try lars anderson hardened steel rods next. He went straight through armour, could he with this?
@dashrendar53205 күн бұрын
I can try that, but if I’m not mistaken, I think the armor he went through was pretty suspect. I am willing to bet a substantial amount of money that if he was trying 1.5 mm harden steel made by an armor (like Dequitem)it would bounce right off withdrawal weight he is using. I will try the modern arrows with my bow because those are the best on the market really

Well, it may not be a video competition, I can see a Super-heavyweight Compound Bow competition at the Olympics. Though effect on Target is a thing that may need to be considered and not just accuracy... Hehe, it is a weapon after all, so it should be measured on weapony things. as well......
@garrettschienschang78988 күн бұрын
Your longbow getting 178 with a 1500grain arrow is about 3x my recurve. I get 182 on average with a 490 grain arrow from my 50lbs recurve.

Yeah, it’s definitely a lot of mass moving pretty fast

Please be careful with those carbon fiber arrows on hard targets. Inspect them well after a hard hit, a little crack in the shaft can cause them to shatter when loosed, especially with that kind of bow weight. If you've never seen what can happen when a carbon arrow shaft shatters when shot, it isn't a good day for the shooter's hand.
@dashrendar53208 күн бұрын
Thank you for that. Yes I was very conscious of any stress fractures and checking the arrow, of course sometimes it’s impossible to tell, but I tried to be as safe as possible.

I think the Chronograph is a fitness video fan, doesn't care so much about archery. 😕 Kinda bummed we didn't get to see the impact from Bishop made Field tip arrows especially after seeing what the Scientific Method ones could do. But, three hours of nerding is lot for anyone (I thought you spent maybe an hour tops) so I don't blame you for being 'tired from battle'. Go warrior, find your nearest Inn and rest. Looking forward to Rambro Part 3: Just Have A Great Time.
@dashrendar53208 күн бұрын
Hahaha that’s a great title for the last one. Yeah it’s super finicky all the time. I think people said it has to do a time of day. The light needs to be straight overhead. And yeah, everything takes a long time because I have one camera so each shot is like two shots so it’s multiplying everything and it fatigues for sure.
@marvinmurphy55238 күн бұрын
What so you think an old bow would do with one with those new arrows? Think it would punch through like with the compound?

@dashrendar53208 күн бұрын
Thank you so much so glad you enjoyed the video. I have never done thumb draw personally so it’s completely foreign to me and I would imagine that’s probably a similar type of bow to King Arthur but these are prevalent in more than 13th and 15th century.

Those light sensor chronographs don't like to work when the light is not above them. From the shadows I would guess you were filming in the morning. Might be why you weren't gety chrono readings. In my experience they work best for a couple of hours on either side of noon.
@dashrendar53208 күн бұрын
Thank you for that. Yes you are spot on. It was morning. Maybe next time I do a video. I can try it in high noon to get a better reading.

@cptmurica11878 күн бұрын
@TimeofRagnarok yep it's known as a lever bow as well. I'm sure ridiculous arrow speeds could be achieved if they can pull it off.

@@dashrendar5320 well you can shoot them with fingers. You don't have to use a release like standard compound bows.
@TimeofRagnarok8 күн бұрын
@@cptmurica1187 as far as I know the highest draw weight they're able to achieve with those is 70 pounds and they're not as high performance as the newer compounds.
