Hearing journalist hand-wave away the effects of foreign social media meddling on politics was frankly baffling. A whole bunch of bad takes from Marina on this one. One minute she’s talking about the insidious effects of the platforms attempts to keep you onboard by keeping you angry, the next she’s saying that foreign meddling doesn’t make a difference to people’s opinions. Evidence of huge numbers of bot accounts and troll farms on FB and Twitter aiming to do just that. Frankly, the whole first half of this episode was a lot of rambling nonsense from both of them. I don’t think either of these two have a great understanding of this subject. Consider sticking to talking about game shows and the charts. Also getting increasingly hard to trust their opinions as real when they’re flogging you Sky or HBO every five minutes in between bits.

With regards to social media being an amplifier of hate, what comes in second, is mockery and cruelness. I noticed this element early on, in the early/peak stage of Facebook. I remember I used to get recurring dreams of being back in school (because I know i am a click away of friending someone from the past) but then, I drew another connection, a lot of the thread posts that I saw of mockery and cruelness, bullying, put downs etc, reminded me of being in the school playground. It was almost like for like. From then on I just saw social media threads as a day in the life of a playground, you might get belittled on one day, bullied on another, teased the next. After I made that connection, my dreams stopped : )

As informed as both hosts are, they are massively uninformed about Mr Beast and the various scandals. One of the key cast members was grooming minors, and bought art from a known child pornographer depicting such acts, that was displayed in multiple Mr Beast streams. Could you for a moment imagine such a thing on TV? What if this was the BBC, or Netflix? But because of lack of understanding and a cloying need to like and understand the biggest new media mogul, a lot of these very serious things get missed, or like in this podcast, laughed off when it is discovered they are hiring HR, lawyers, and crisis PR teams

Literally and that is just the surface of the allegations that are coming out. Faking the whole donations (giving it to cast/crew members families/friends etc and not actual random people) etc. Deliberately encouraging children to gamble also. There is loads coming out. The guy is genuinely a sociopath and needs to be shut down. But he's YT golden boy and they won't cancel him because of pure greed.

They had the clickbait of putting it in the title as though they understood the gravity, but then they revealed Richard’s friend is a producer so must be neutral-to-positive for now. Just like other intellectual dishonesty, like having all these “anti-far-right” opinions but not being willing to say the word “Holocaust” during all this rioting and uninformed youth hysteria. They will be snarky on topics once they are ‘decided’ by the intellectual and entertainment dictators but won’t give real opinions if it could isolate them from potential fans.

Really surprised at how positive they were about Mr Beast. Some of the stories coming from the New York Times and the videos from Rosanna Pansino paint a much darker picture. It really seems like they're operating on information which is like 3 weeks old, but even so, I can't imagine they pay attention to the drama on youtube. The concern is that this paints a narrow picture for people off-platform, as there's no mention of the Jake Weddle interview, which fundamentally destroys the conclusions that Mr Beast's new media empire is somehow preferable to the regulations of old media. Editorially this is a huge oversight for the credibility of this discussion

I'm surprised that more attention wasn't given to the allegations surrounding the Mr Beast entourage. They are serious and evolving. The thing is, this probably won't harm the brand. As another commentator alludes to regarding xxxsniperwolf (but see also Logan Paul etc) there are plenty of KZbin personalities who commit abhorrent acts or are exposed in some way, but this does not actually seem to impact on their long-term audience. It would be interesting to hear Marina and Richard discuss the idea of accountability and the power/responsibility of KZbin and its algorithm.

When I first started using it years ago I put lots of pictures and updates about my children (nothing intrusive) and I enjoy checking and reminding myself of what they said or did. Then I end up scrolling and getting caught up in whatever. If I had a way to check those memories without being on the site I would probably never do social media at all…..but I trapped myself. Lol

She then decided to dox Jack while he was live because that's something normal people do when legitimate criticisms are made about them and audiences & creators are becoming educated about the illegal activity. 38:33 "This is very new, this idea of doing shows with a thousand contestants"... Clearly Marina has forgotten ITV's 1983 epic "Ultra Quiz", with Michael Aspel, Russell Grant, Sally James and Jonathan King, along with 2,000 contestants vying to win 10,000 of the then-brand-new £1 coins, and jet-setting from Brighton to Hong Kong. And they were just copying Japanese TV, who'd been doing something similar since the seventies...

@@anthonyhollohan7651 It's an elimination gameshow with 1,000 contestants. Compare that to an elimination gameshow with 2,000 contestants in the UK more than 40 years ago. Marina said it was "this idea of doing shows with a thousand contestants" is "very new". The original Japanese show had 10,000 contestants each year from 1977 to 1992 and then as recently as 1998; the year MrBeast was born. TEN THOUSAND contestants 47 years ago. And, it turns out there was an American edition in 1981 before the UK edition with almost 1,000 contestants, filmed in Los Angeles with first prize roughly equivalent to $300,000 today. 47 years isn't "very new", and MrBeast's 1,000 contestants are a TENTH of what the Japanese had.

@@nesrinamin8579 Well Twitter was certainly hosting the most charged conversations on the topic but but to say they’re the reason they happened is the exact sort of mental trap they were discussing in that segment. You can’t organise an effective riot on Twitter because it’s too public. The actual logistical organisation of the riots, their locations, times and targets were done using services like Telegram and yes, Facebook groups. Twitter was just where all the feelings boiled to the surface and could be seen by people outside the target audience for the messaging.

On Katy Perry/JLo, Marina touched on this - one of the byproducts of Taylor Swifts rise to be the pre eminent musical artist of our era is its created an arena where real and authentic are what people want. It has been done with such authenticity and is so “real” that it’s shone an awkward spotlight on to people like JLo, Katy, and others and made them look rather clunky. That’s why Charli XCX etc is so popular (apart from the great music!) she is real. American Idol is about as fake as you can get in the music industry and having been associated with that for 7 years, and now to come back into a new musical landscape where she’s not seen as genuine, I guess it’s no suprise she hasn’t hit this time around.

The whole “promoting gambling to children” thing has just gotten really dumb. Kids have limited money. They’re not spending hundreds on chocolate or merch for the chance to win prizes, and the tiny percentage that did overspend aren’t going to become gambling addicts because a chocolate company gave away prizes. Why aren’t you talking about McDonald’s and their random happy meal toys and Monopoly game? Oh, right, you weren’t told to.

Twitter was always for politics though. Reason being, functionally it is text based but you can add as much context as you like you can add articles, images, videos, go into detail with information. That’s why it was uniquely useful. When people say they prefer tiktok for political discourse, where replies in comments are about 4 characters long, out of order, no ability to add articles images, heavily over policed by bots, what they are saying is that they preferred living in a bubble where they receive zero pushback to anything they are saying. The fact is the tiktok educated are a huge problem too, and they have no understanding of the echo chambers they have created for themselves. The trolls are awful of course, but unfortunately too many have grown too accustomed to being the only ones allowed to speak, and too fragile to ever question themselves, preferring instead to reject an entire platform for fear they may contaminate themselves with the perspectives of the great unwashed.

Did not enjoy this episode. These two talk nonstop about how traditional media (newspaper, tv etc) is dead and how everyone is online. but then they spend the whole thing laughing at the idea twitter has any real world impact or that people take it seriously. The recent race riots were coordinated and fuelled almost entirely by online discourse, particuarly twitter. So yes of course you can mock the terminally online posting about their salad or ranting about trump etc, but it clearly has huge real world impacts, hence its banning in those listed countries. young people are still very much using twitter and similar platforms hence the constant studies about the radicalising effects of algorithms on young men in particular,

Look at the people they have let back onto Twitter and then relate those to the UK riots. Did any of the returnees give out false information that was taken up by the easily (or wanted to be) persuaded? Yes

Titanium? That's one Katy passed on. Sia made the David Guetta song a hit. But as least Katy will get to perform at the AFL Grand Final this year! Lifetime achievement award for that.

In Canada we can't post any media at all. The only way about it is to post KZbin videos of news reports. For educators and researchers like me, this is a nuisance.

Yep, from the days when we paid by the character to send a page/text (letting The Youths know, since R&M seem to be pandering to them in this episode, so clearly that’s the audience they’re seeking, and not the millennials-and-up whom they’ve already captured)

Unless you can actually play an instrument, you're not a musician. Singers and dancers are not musicians. They are performers. And they don't write their own songs. And they're auto tuned. Music today is shit. And, yes, I'm old.
