*The Congo Crisis* after the collapse of Belgium the Belgian Congo was left in a state of limbo. elections were held to decide who would run the Congo. The Mouvement National Congolais (MNC) under the leadership of Patrice Lumumba won the election. Lumumba was quite pro French and five years into his prime ministership just as he was about to have the Congo join the French Federation, he was overthrown by Joseph-Désiré Mobutu via a CIA backed coup. mobutu changed the country's name to Zaire. the French Federation not happy about this decided to help Lumumba who had fled to france to retake control of the congo. they managed to get the help of Katangan rebels by promising them independence if they helped Lumumba retake power and with that Operation Brazza began. Federation forces quickly stormed Léopoldville while Katangan rebels rose up in a mass revolt. Mobutu quickly fled north in hopes of fighting a guerilla style war and ware down the Federation forces as in Vietnam but the Federation had learned from fighting in Vietnamese and they quickly countered Mobutu's guerilla tactics. Mobutu was soon captured and executed. After the war as promised Katanga gained independence and Lumumba had the Congo join the French Federation.
