Can native English speakers pass the IELTS test? - Bath 🇬🇧
In this video, James and I hit the streets of Bath to ask the average English person IELTS speaking questions to see if they can pass the test or not!
The topic of this test is "Celebrations"
The IELTS test is for people who want to move or study in an English speaking country such as the UK, Australia, Canada etc. The IELTS test contains all four skills: listening, reading, writing and spaking.
Now, the speaking part of the test has 3 sections....
PART 1 - general questions about yourself / topics about hobbies, work, neighbourhood etc.
Part 2 - in this section, you are given a card asking you to describe something, you have one minute to prepare your answer, and then you must speak for a minimum of 2 minutes. In other words, a mini speech!
Part 3 - an academic discussion, similar to debates at school or university.
Also, for anyone who doesnt know, Bath is located in the south west of England, roughly 1 hour and a half from London by train, and is famous for its imposing architecture and Roman remains.
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about the IELTS exam or even about the city of Bath!

Not at all, honestly if you can speak the language with a adverse level of speaking and listening meaning thats where you focus your study the test isn't that hard at all The problem is schools FOCUS on grammar and Vocabulary without giving the students value to those rules and words as in using them in real time. It blows my mind people spend 5+ years learning English let alone any language and still are bad at it Modern education for language is just trash
@AngloSaks666
@AngloSaks666 Жыл бұрын
This isn't really true. It's true that without having some level of logic and knowledge it's harder for you to have much to say that the examiner can grade. But they really do simply assess the adequacy of the language the examinee uses to convey what they want to say with adequate detail and quality. The student can reveal lack of knowledge about the subject, and even completely faulty logic, but if they can convey what they think in response to the questions adequately, then they pass. It's a test of their ability to communicate in English, and the documents the examiners refer to to judge that, and the procedures they are taught in order to assess the students, relate to that and only that.

@@AngloSaks666 well. It’s ok to be disagree. However, imagine that doing writing test without need to think logically, or doing reading test with the tricky multiple answer where the answer is twisted or related to one another. I don’t think even native speakers can get band 9 by just simply answer them without even think logically

@Tpoleful
@Tpoleful Жыл бұрын
That's the idea. They would not be able to evaluate your range if you only give single sentence answers. Speaking test is probably where English natives will likely get the highest band (8.5/9). Listening and reading requires high level of concentration. But 8+ band is attainable without prep if you can focus. The only part where English natives will need to prepare for is the written test. You will only get around band 7 if you use simple grammatically correct sentences. Even if you manage to stay on topic. They really want you to use different sentence structures and synonyms. This is because, bands 8.5-9 are actually supposed to be professional level users who write journals, articles, Books, research papers etc. Bands 7.0-8.0 is where your average English speaker stands (With little prep).
@user-oz7qg2nx1d
@user-oz7qg2nx1d Жыл бұрын
@@Tpoleful I couldn't agree more thanks for pointing that out because l thought that when you get band 8.5 that means you're an intermediate learner so now l realized getting these results requires you to have a wild rang of sentence structures, using synonyms etc.. and you have to be an advanced English learner to get those results.

@@Tpoleful do you know a site I can find material of IELTS to study for free? My English is not that bad, but I've a terrible memory, I keep forgetting things and ofc the language, I can fully understand but I can't speak perfectly as I hear because yk I don't practice speaking -which is very very stressful to me, I don't have anyone to practice with, and second I keep forgetting the vocabs, synonyms and the sentences as a whole, I know it but I can't find it in my brain, I know it's somewhere here but I can't recall it on spot 😭😭😭 also I'm not a good speaker even in my native language, I take long time before I respond, sometimes I even respond irrelevantly 💀 I've social anxiety so it contributes very much, I'm very skeptical about taking the exam because idk what to study and whether I can trust my guts and speak confidently or I'll embarrass myself and fail it -ik there's no failing but lower bands, I'm full of doubts that I may not show myself correctly and get a score lower than my actual level because I just couldn't handle it, mentally 😬😭 so any tips please 🥲?

I taught languages in a high school in the UK. I also speak Russian and Polish. We had a lot of children who spoke Polish and some who spoke Russian at home and we always put them in for Polish or Russian GCSE. My job was to prepare them for their speaking exam. I could actually do this better as a non-native speaker with exam experience than a native speaker who didn't know about exams. Before training, they tended to speak as they did with their parents using just ordinary, every day language which was just too simple. To score highly in the exam you have to use a range of different tenses and 'moods', a variety of adjectives, use comparatives, adverbs, express opinions, justify them - the list goes on. The moral of this story is that in every day speech we all speak fairly straightforward language. In exams, we have to 'show off' what we are capable of even if that's not necessarily how we normally speak. PS I have an English friend who has lived in France for many years teaching English in a high school. At one point he took a CAPES exam in English. He failed his first attempt at the speaking test precisely because the language he used was judged to be not complex enough. He just spoke like a native speaker instead of 'showing off'. He passed second time.

I think the best one was the last bloke that was at the park with a lot of noisy kids around. He had great ideas, great and complex grammatical and sentence structures, and he has a wide range of vocabulary. He's probably a type of a more confident person that gets to talk to a lot of people really often, because he can organize the ideas really well, and he also has a lot of ideas in mind and the thing that makes him great in it is that he is able to express them in a clear and interesting way and with that he can also really nicely grab the listener's attention and make him listen to whatever he's saying or talking about. He's a great speaker.

A native speaker could also be asked about a topic they have no experience of. It's bad luck, but you need to develop strategies for this. Remember that there is no mark for content in the speaking test.

Hey, thanks for posting this video. That's very useful when it comes to learn English ! Although, could help me with the sentence below; I don't understand what "niche" as an adjective actually means. Just know he's talking about local festivals in his area. "There are quite a lot of very niche ones" (14m)

Well, as far as native interviewees are concerned, they answered questions subconsciously. I think for non native IELTS candidates it may seem quite a bit weird to answer in this way but for them it is okay. It is how they talk and live that is it

Of course, those in the video were not fully prepared for these questions and that is why I thought it would be an interesting video to make 😁

Humble suggestion I have for these series video is to make the subtitles fully in a way of sentences. That would be more friendly to foreign learners like me from Asia.

I just want to let you guys know a bit of info: most non-native English speakers (especially us in Asia) are merely excellent on paper and we focus more on our numerical scores. However, whatever English skills we can apply in real life, where we cannot hide behind a pen and paper, do not reflect our scores at all. Perhaps there are native English speakers who might score lower, but their real-life communication skills are unsurpassed.

It's kinde funny because at the end of the day they're natives so it would be easier for them to pass this test. We the non native speakers encounter the difficulties in such tests cuz we don't have this wide range of vocabularies.
