Can Native English speakers pass the IELTS exam? - Bristol
Have you ever wondered how Native English speakers would do in an English exam? Well, in this video my dear friend James and I are walking around the lovely city of Bristol, asking people IELTS Speaking questions to see if they can pass!
If you don't know what the IELTS test is or why people take it, let me explain!
The IELTS test is for people who want to move or study in an English speaking country such as the UK, Australia, Canada etc. The IELTS test contains all four skills: listening, reading, writing and spaking.
Now, the speaking part of the test has 3 sections....
PART 1 - general questions about yourself / topics about hobbies, work, neighbourhood etc.
Part 2 - in this section, you are given a card asking you to describe something, you have one minute to prepare your answer, and then you must speak for a minimum of 2 minutes. In other words, a mini speech!
Part 3 - an academic discussion, similar to debates at school or university.
If you are taking the test soon, make sure to watch the video careful to see the comments on the screen about useful vocabulary / grammar, as well as the tips about what you should NOT do in the IELTS speaking exam!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video.
Chris

I’m a native speaker of Canadian English, it’s interesting to see the difference in idioms. I’ve never heard anyone in Canada say “warm to”, for instance.

What expressions should people know if they go to Canada?
@kitkatkk2543

One I don’t hear a lot outside of Canada is “double-double”. It’s a coffee order that means “two milk, two sugar”. The most common one I can think of is “gong show”, meaning a chaotic event or situation, like “Last night’s party was a gong show!”. On the east coast of Canada, you might hear “fill your boots”, which means “do whatever you want”. A less common one is “hang a Roger/Larry”, which is used in directions to mean turn right or left, respectively.

Most IELTS students whom I have been talking to said that you need to use some transitional words in your speaking such as "moreover, in addition, furthermore, and etc, but this is not true at all. These words would just make your speaking sound rigid and unnatural. I don't know what you think of it. I mean if you use those words accordingly, it'll most definitely yield a natural response but most of the time we speak with colloquial vocabulary. What do you think?

Yes, it's indeed true. Speaking should not be formal in form too much like writing. Ask yourself, do you tend to use formal expressions in your everyday talks ?
