I think a lot of it was the CVT’s. I know women at work who are not car people at all who I hear talking about getting new cars and even amongst them, they eliminate Nissan from their lists because of what they hear about their transmissions, and/or they know someone who had transmission issues or had issues themselves. Nissan made great cars but didn’t pivot away from CVT’s when the writing was on the wall. They kept pushing them and putting them in more cars. Well, now the reputation of ALL of their cars has been destroyed.

Yep Brands Reputation Supersedes actual Experience
@kwadwothestanАй бұрын
Agreed. This is the root of their troubles. If I were them, I would try to pivot from CVTs entirely. But idk if it would be too expensive for them to switch to a more traditional automatic at this point. I mean their cars have other issues too, mainly them looking so bare bones cheap except for a handful of models. But they have to find a way to shed the perception of unreliability and actually make quality products again.

Nissan deserve what they get. This all started 30 years ago in the mid 90's where Nissan was finding themselves cash-strapped and needing to update their fleet. Company was up for sale but couldn't find a buyer, however Renault bought 40% shares and they entered a parts-sharing alliance between them. Carlos Gohn was tasked with fixing the serious problems, which he did and Carlos finally got Nissan to profit via the Leaf EV among other changes he implemented. Carlos even acquired for Nissan 34% of Mitsubishi! However Nissan accused him of 'under reporting his earnings' laying charges, and consequently Carlos had to flee Japan in an AV case. Dopy old Nissan pretty much killed the goose that laid the golden egg, so no sympathy. Other Nissan executives have also reported dirty tactics used in order to dismiss employees. The bad CVT transmissions has only one of many issues associated with this questionable brand. Sometimes the cars go fantastic for over 300kms and sometimes they cant even manage 100,000kms without a major reliability failure. We had a 1995 Pathfinder diesel and found it to be absolutely dreadful. The 1996 Pathfinder wasn't even on a proper frame!
@BrkDownMediaАй бұрын
Nissan definitely has a culture problem, well before Carlos. Yeah, the story behind Carlos is peculiar. Now knowing he and Carlos Tavares were colleagues has me looking at him sideways. I do think the Auto business can be very dirty behind the curtain.

A couple months ago I had a Nissan deal write me up an OTD on a brand new 2024 base model manual Versa. It was $19,985 including everything, and he wouldn't budge. I walked away.
@BrkDownMediaАй бұрын
Taxes included? That’s not bad tbh. A manual Nissan would last as long as any Honda. Getting any brand new car under $20k is an achievement. But you would have to keep that car to make it worth it.

Unpopular opinion and a little bit off topic but JAQUAR is dead… they currently have one vehicle for sale in America it is very mid and behind the competitors and no one takes them seriously anymore in the luxury car market although they have plans to come out with a new line up no one has yet to see a actual finished product or pricing or model names or any of that..
@BrkDownMediaАй бұрын
They ramped down production a few years ago for their EV transition. All of this has been intentional since 2016. They may be dead but it sounds like we’re for a rebirth.
@williamrossetter9430Ай бұрын
Very astute analysis! Nissan has a product marketing issue, and to your point, there is no real flagship vehicle (like the Altima or Rogue). Renault was not a good fit in the end. The recent years reliability issues on top of a non-hybrid product line up is leading to Nissan's downfall. No more excuses for NIssan, either get with the program or get out of the car business.
@BrkDownMediaАй бұрын
Thank you. I agree. The Renault partnership may have run its course. It’s definitely cultural as it is marketing

Nissan/Infiniti has not had anything in quite some time. No cap When I see a Nissan on the road I stay clear. High probability the driver cant drive and I think bargain basement cars also the stigma yields true. I hope they can turn it around but I agree they need to get rid of Jatco CVTs have a core vehicle get rid of the incentives and increase quality.
@litchipsАй бұрын
They couldn't make their CVTs reliable, but thought they were ready to do reliable variable compression engines. It just boggles the mind. Much smaller Subaru was able to make a reasonably reliable CVT for much more demanding applications such as Subaru Ascent 3row SUV and Subaru WRX. But Nissan couldn't make it reliable even for small cars. And then to continue selling it for a decade knowing that it's destroying your brand and financially hurting your customers. To the point where it's now a brand that only stupid people buy. As someone who owned one during their good old days, I think time's up for Nissan. The chances of successful turnaround in this hypercompetitive environment are so low it's not worth investing for. Even if they were to release a reliable car tomorrow, like the new Pathfinder with ZF gearbox might be, it will take a decade for people to believe them again, and they don't have this long. Their best approach is to liquidate it and return money to creditors and shareholders.
@BrkDownMediaАй бұрын
I think the stake in JatCo is why they continue to push them. Trying to squeeze juice out of a turnip atp for a return on investment.
@CanbutcantАй бұрын
Nissan needs a reliable and affordable cars right now, it’s competing in the worst environment possible. If prices are within reach to consumers and they gain better reputation they will sell cars again. Even the Nissan z which was aiming for 30,000 starting is hitting 44,000. Interest rates are too high in the us market to convince most to spend 44,000. I really like Nissan, it’s painful to see them in such a state.

I really don't know what would save nissan. The new Kicks seems to be a really good product, but I don't think it's enough to save the company. The profit margins are way too tight. They are also behind in electrification, and the Renault alliance is not paying anymore.

Again the murican market is much different and Nissan there are terrible. Other markets around the world we get their brilliant hybrid system, e-power. Now if the yanks actually got their bums in gear then it would seriously rivals Toyota's hybrid system. I have a Nissan epower hybrid car and it's one of the best cars I have ever owned. The tech is amazing and really the states is missing out. The issue is USA have ridiculous and stupid motor laws that really isolate a lot of companies. So really if you want to blame someone your country! It's only going to get worse next year with your new / old president. Nissan will be fine in other parts of the world but in murica they're dead.
