Anytime I'm approached by a new angler wanting to get into saltwater fishing without using their freshwater reels I always point them to the daiwa bg2500 combo. The rod isn't the best but it works especially at a 130 dollar price point for rod and reel. I've caught white trout fishing 1/8 jigs with trout tricks, I've caught slot reds on a popping cork and I've even caught pretty big 20+ lb black drum on it using a carolina rig. A bg2500 with 15lb braid can do just about anything you need it to do inshore. It's not going to be the best but it most certainly is versatile. I have a friend that has caught big red snapper and even an AJ on a bg2500 just because he wanted to show how tough the reel is

I've been using a couple of Diawa Revros lately, a 2000 and 3000. So far they've been fine, no complaints. I got drug across a grass flat by a big stingray in my kayak with the 2000 and it dealt with the torture. They might not last as long as more expensive reels but they're great so far, especially for the kayak.

i pretty much only target catfish nowadays. im disabled. i have nerve damage and limited range of motion in my left hand/wrist which i use to retrieve ven though i am right handed. for that reason i put waaaay too big a reel on most of my rods and until this year i never ran braid. now i am switching most of my 12 rods over to braid and every one i use circle hooks of varying sizes. one of my favorite "combos" is a zebco dock demon 2.5' rod with a penn pursuit4 4000 with 30lb braid and a 6/0 circle hook. i love the reactions i get from people when they see me land cats over 10lbs with it. for giggles i have another dock demon with a penn pursuit4 6000 with 80lb braid and a 8/0 circle hook. after decades of being a shakespeare guy i have been swithing over to penn this year but for comic value i just bought a DAIWA DF100A.

maintenance will just about beat high price point every time, except for outright material failure and i haven't seen that very often in all but the very bottom component stuff and thats still not that often. the real benefit to higher price point equipment is rebuild-ability. specialization of equipment can definitely be an asset in fishing but time on the water and knowledge about the species will out-fish any setup. it is more of a preference once your aware of how a primary target species will act and where they they live. i tend to gravitate more to the lighter side of the spectrum for setup in just about any situation cause i like the dance more. the rod, reel, and line set up id recommend would always be the one you can afford without thinking about it too much. the amount of success you have on low cost equipment will be too close for a lot of folks who have sank hundreds plus into to admit. ive ran the whole spectrum of gear from full custom rods and reels, ultra high-end brand name offerings, and off the rack rod reel combos for less than a dinner at a sit down restaurant. just go fishing and learn how to take care of the equipment.

I recently cracked the arm in the back of my Daiwa Fuego 3000 and I was devastated. My wife tossed the receipt so I can’t even try to send it in and see if they would fix it since it is under warranty . So it’s super glued and backed by gorilla glue tape because I just got it last Christmas and I’m in love with the Fuego . She knew how devastated I was , so for Father’s Day ( my first fathers day ever ) my wife went out and picked me up the new Daiwa BG MQ 3000 and I’m in love all over again . What a classy luxury reel . I have yet to hook into anything massive with it but the fish I have caught have been brought in with ease . I went out yesterday morning and horsed a couple trout and mangrove snapper in with it . The Daiwa BG MQ just looks cool from an outside looking in view . But for $200+ it is worth every penny ! In fact that's not a carbon, that's graphite aka plastic. Carbon doesn't flex. This might be misleading, especially since Daiwa started calling their graphite Zaion V to lure more people to think it's carbon just like their Zaion. Be careful with lower spec Daiwas as their roller bearing are super cheap and will cause you a lot of problems on the water as soon as water gets in, plus the stems of smaller sizes are really limber and start flexing from 4 pound drag pressure. If you are a Daiwa fan boy get BG, it has a lot less flaws then cheap LT series reels that are, lets be honest, single use reels.
