In this video, I demonstrate how....and if panel prep can remove wax from automotive body panels. PANEL PREP easily removes all surface oils or filling agents, revealing the true state of a surface. Use of Panel Prep cleans surfaces completely, ensuring optimal bonding wax, sealants, or any coating.
WHAT RATIO IPA WIPE SHOULD YOU MAKE?
The tricky part is in the mix and ratio you prepare from the Isopropyl Alcohol and distilled water. We try and mix a 12.5% solution because it is the simplest ratio to make but you are safe to be in the 10-25% range. To achieve our 12.5% mix we use 8 ounces of 50% IPA and 16 ounces of distilled water. If you would mix these 1 to 1 you would be at a 25% IPA solution so we double the distilled water to 1 part Isopropyl Alcohol. We then transfer this to a BPA-Free 32 ounce spray bottle. A high quality spray bottle can last a long time and can be adjusted to allow you to mist or stream the mixture onto the vehicle’s surface or into a microfiber towel.

I usually use isopropyl alcohol at about 10% to 20%, with some butyl cellosolve (aka ethylene glycol monobutyl ether or 2-butoxyethanol) added for solvency and mild surfactancy.

Great video as always, Brian. The Armour panel prep has become my favorite prep spray. I love the spearmint scent, and the lubrication offers a lot more confidence after spending hours with a polisher. Pretty much all of their products that I’ve tried have really impressed me.

Also would be interesting if a body shop panel prep would do the trick? Like a Rustoleum Wax & Tar Remover, or Dupli-Color Prep Spray.

@@apexdetail85I was also curious as for the final wipe down, if you use a solvent based prep spray/solution, would that not enhance the bonding of something like a ceramic coat, or other sealant. Particularly if like you said it get into the pores of the clear and swells/expands the pores. Would protection not have a better or stronger bond after curing together with the clearcoat?

I can answer this question as i work in a body shop as a detailer and a paint prepper. We typically use two panel prep solutions. One thats water based to remove anything organic from the surface, like dirt and dust. Followed up by a solvent based panel prep for waxes and oils on the surface. The solvent based formula works extremely well for removing sealants and any spray on ceramics in one wipe. I cant say how it would fair against an actual ceramic coating though.

@@DominicMartinico5521 Ah. The man who has the answers from a true body shop. I have the solvent based Rust-Oleum Wax and Tar remover. The bottle says it needs to sit on the surface for several minutes. But for me it always dries to fast. Have you found it necessary to let it sit there that long?

Love these comparison analysis videos, Brian. I’ve been using 15% solution of 99% IPA and the rest distilled water. Now I use Peleus from Phoenix EOD. Over sealants, I’ve found that after I wipe the panel prep off & carefully slide the back of my hand over it, there’s a definitive difference in feel, which also tells me that what was on there seems to be removed.

I think IPA is not an ideal panel prep. I use IPA to clean flux from circuit boards at work sometimes and it’s really not that good in terms of lubricity and without surfactants just moves residue around. The flux remover sprays work a lot better for a perfect finish on the boards (not for paint!). I like the Koch Chemie Pps for paint but it’s overpriced.

The difference in feel has been explained already on youtube that the sealant is not always 100% gone yet, rather masks itself like its death but can be brought back to life a bit with a wash.

Yes, would like to see you go further with these videos. To my understanding, isopropyl alcohol isn’t great at removing polishing oils as it doesn’t contain any surfactants and also lacks lubrication. Out of the three you mentioned for removing coatings, do any of them remove coatings off plastics such as a windshield cowl?

I’d love to see panel preps for coating, strictly for coating prep. No matter how well I remove polish, I seem to have hard to see or find residue in the past. . My double prep has solved that problem. I think as the years have gone by I’m a lot more adept at polish removal but when coating still have that old paranoia of coating failure due to an unclean or rather polish residue left behind. So I over kill the final prep. My reward is no failures now in a several years. Did a BMW X3 today, flawless, Owner ecstatic, I get his Z4 next.

Interesting one. I used Mother's CMX to prep (not strip, paint was new and bare) before a coating because it was much more cost effective than others in its 24 oz bottle. They state that it is not alcohol-based and has some lubricantion in order to be safer on the paint. It also had almost no smell. I'll keep some of these others in mind if I need anything more heavy duty in the future.

I feel that cleaning the paint like prewash (certain shampoos or apc )clay followed by some kind of panel prep for heavier contanaments such as tar , pine pitch is different than prep for protection. I use malco S.A.P for heavy stuff . As for actual protection prep its gyeon. Sorry for the long rambling. Its 5am and not enough coffee . Lol . Keep up the good work.
