I'm really glad you're able to share your story and experiences so people can know how things work because I've been thinking about a story with an amputee as a main character and I've already learned so much! So thank you!

Fingers crossed it works! I’ve recently had spinal surgery and am now dealing with a complication: neuropathic pain. My neurosurgeon told me what I’m experiencing is very similar to phantom pains. So I kind of have an inkling of what you’re dealing with. The last three months have seen me on an average of 3 hours of sleep total per night feeling as if someone is hacking away at my leg with a white-hot sword, alternating with feeling as if electric current is zapping through. The slightest touch to the sensitive areas is anything ranging from tiny electric shocks to the flesh getting torn off. Car rides are torture (the vibrations). The weirdest things trigger it. My neurosurgeon has now started me on a course of mild anti-depressants in the hope that it’ll help. Fingers crossed. My deepest respect! You’ve been dealing with this kind of thing for years. I’ve only had it for a short time. I really, REALLY hope your operation works!

It makes perfect sense; just like a sensor on a computer or an alarm system, if you have nothing connected to it, it's going to yell at you for having something not connected to it. Since the brain and nervous system electrical pulses running through it, having something to have feedback on (your muscles) make a ton of sense.

I'm glad there are qualified professionals already on the task. When I heard you talk about phantom pain, I began thinking about the cause. The nerves remaining in your leg were developed to work with more tissue than you currently have. That's like a high pressure water line; where 14% of customers are cut off, and the remaining customers are forced to deal with over pressure. I hope you find relief with your upcoming procedures.

Tmr can also be used to help control prosthetics. Hand prosthetics are incredibly difficult to control using residual muscles, and if you’re an upper arm amputee there’s not a lot of muscle left to produce signals for the emg sensors. So they can take those nerves and redirect them into your pec muscle, which isn’t used much if you don’t have much arm left. You can still comtrol those nerves, they just control the pec muscle instead, which is a much large muscle and the emg signals a lot stronger!

I've seen studies on using what is known as a mirror box for amputees suffering from phantom limb pain. Basically the box creates a virtual version of the missing limb by using mirrors to project the existing limb to the other side. So, if you're missing your right hand, then you'd stick your left hand into the box and your right arm into the other side. Look down into the box and flex the left hand while looking at the mirror that appears to be the right hand. IIRC, they suggested that the visual feedback helps the brain calm down the signals going out to the missing limb and not getting a response back, hence the pain.

That is awesome that folks have options. I know a few amputees, and phantom pain is very real and excruciating most times. Two have lost partial legs, and one an arm. I wonder if it can work for other forms of nerve damage from surgeries other than amputation. I am looking forward to hear how your most recent surgery went in the area of long term results

Thank you for sharing your story and your life with all of us that is really loving of you to do. I just wanted to share what I have learned about what you are talking about regarding phantom pain. The reason for this pain or even the feeling that your leg is still there is because it is. We all have a soul, which is the real us and is also where our life is, and attached to this soul is our sprit body and attached to that is our physical body. The spirit and physical bodies are sensory apparatus of the soul, our real self. So when we loose and arm or leg from our physical body, that doesn’t mean that you lose it from your spirit body. Your spirit body still has two full legs. You could actually test this out and go to a medium who can speak with spirits and ask them if they see your two legs in your spirit body. The real question is why did you have it amputated, and the cause for any physical illness will always be emotional.

Cool. I might try that. I've found that very intense massage helps (wooden or even metal implements can help spare your fingers). Massage schools teach people to avoid behind the knee because that's where the nerves are accessible. But if one is footless, the "nerve damage" has already been done (but talk to your doc). Anyway, it works for me.

In the interim, I'd suggest using a strong vibration massager at the base of your skull. It helps interrupt the extra sensations between mind and limb. This also helps for folks with other nerve pain related disorders outside of their head/neck area. I hope this helps someone else out there, because it was a game changer for me. ❤😁♿

I wish you the best. I can imagine what you go through on a daily basis. I have both feet. However, I've recently been diagnosed with TTS (Tarsel Tunnel Syndrome) and it dictates my life. It controls what I can do and what I can't do. And I'm always obsessing about my shoes, orthotics, whether I should wear this padding or that padding under or on top of the orthodic. Im always buying new stuff to try. New socks, new cushiony insoles, nothing makes it better. I can never walk barefoot. I can't run, do jumping Jack's, play tennis, or do any exercise that requires my toe to bend backwards (no push ups, no burpees, no planks, etc) No squats or anything like it. I can walk short distances (100 yards maybe) before the pain starts. Totally sucks to have an injury that effects your ability to be mobile.
