Years ago, i caught a decent double out of the lower Dorset Stour. A passing lady asked what type of fish it was. When I told her she said "Do the council know? I let my dog swim in there." Her dog was an overweight black lab.

The assumption is that pike are only attacking for food. It's likely they also attack for territorial reasons, which is why they will go for a glittery lure that looks like nothing in nature, or half a mackerel going backwards. Pike will certainly attack other pike of about the same size, one grabbing the other across the back, which is highly inefficient food source. Where pike attack unlikely prey like dogs and human fingers and toes, it's usually where there has been a sudden drop in small fish, and the pike is starving. Apropos of not much, I was fishing for chub in September and a couple of jack pike were attacking floats and feeders, no matter how fast or slow the retrieve, to the point where I had to move swims. If they attack an empty wire cage, a Chihuahua must look positively inviting.

My Dads mate was wading in the river, and a pike grabbed hold of the end of his boot!

I remember about 25 years ago i was walking down the canal in Wigan spinning for pike and a elderly lady was on her knees screaming and shouting, when i asked her what was wrong she said her little dog went for a paddle and a crocodile grabbed her the dog and took it under, im guessing she was referring to a pike coz they do look similar from above but something defo happened because she was inconsolable and there was rumours of a massive pike on that strech! True story

I lived in northern Sweden for several years, and I have actually met a guy who'd had part of his toes bitten off, and also heard first hand accounts of witnessing water fowl being taken , and also one account of a dog being attacked

Imagine Australians or Florida residents dealing with Crocodiles and Alligators reading about Europeans scared of a medium sized fish eating their dogs! lol Fair to say dogs do far more damage to ponds/lakes and their inhabitants, than anything in them can do to them! (except maybe Blue Green Algae/Cyanobacteria I guess!)

There are accounts of anglers washing their hands and getting bit, and even horses whilst they drink have been bit on the lips by pike, however these are erroneos incidents not deliberate calculated attacks.

Interesting video. I was excited as a child to go fishing by a children’s story describing an attack on a person. Then there was Swallows and Amazons! I saw one eat a rocking chair once!!!

@jimmycburfield5997 Pike are a big draw to catch, they remind me of little crocs! The tales, true or false, definitely stick in the mind. Don't tell Wilfe. He might stop lure fishing 🙂

@@ryandoherty6174 I’m talking about Piking Mr Hooper….it ain’t like going down the pond and catching Blue Gills or Tommy Cods. In the 80’s I saw anglers catching twenty pound pike on a regular basis ( not me) but anglers prepared to travel and knowing their business. Those fish were impressive. Swimming in Bassenthwaite lake always seemed a bit scary knowing that those predators were lurking! To this day I always wary of even relatively small pike.

Pike can really go for big prey items, even themselves, there's a recent article from last year that a pike died choking on another pike, the article title, "Lake District pike bit off more than it could chew".

It was actually a guy off a boat at Bosley locks mate. He dropped his sunglasses in the water. Put his hand in to get them back and a pike grabbed bos hand.i reckon it was the glint off the glasses lense or something that made it mistake his hand for a fish

@jordantheallroundangler85 that must of been a different one mate I remember reading about the article and this guy was reading a book sat at the water edge. It shown the picture of his foot was nothing to extreme of injury

I watched a pike bite my other half while was he was sleeping with his feet in the lake lol...but I wouldn't call it an 'attack', it just bit and let go, barely left a mark. If it was trying to eat him he'd have surely known about it. I'm thinking maybe they're just curious when they bite sometimes?
