We are allowed to use our lights (only lights) on public road if the site you are hired to work is on public property, or if you come to a accident and decide to help. As long as you aren't impeding traffic or trying to conduct a traffic stop then your good.

Wash DC. Nope. Any lens facing forward must be yellow amber or white (clear) . Rear facing must amber or yellow. Except tail lights or brake lights. (Which must be red). No greens allowed period. Yellow and Amber are caution beacons. So at a accident scene for public safety would be ok. If you in any way project you are law enforcement, then those lights are used to help articulate a charge of impersonation of a police officer. One of five misdemeanor crimes in DC that can get you two years in jail instead of one. Only speaking for Washington DC of course. Blue lights on running boards and fender Wells are a no no.

I have the best of both worlds. I'm a security officer here in Texas but I've also been a volunteer Firefighter for 16 years. I have a Crown Victoria that I use for both, for FD I have Red/white to the front and red/blue/amber to the rear, for security use I have amber/green front and rear, all on separate switches. I've worked countless accidents in my travels around North Texas, only a handful of times have I been questioned but I gladly display my credentials and end up with a "thanks" or "appreciate the help". As far as my security lights being used on a public roadway, it depends ony post assignment, like if I'm having to block traffic for an event or have to park on the street to get out and handle an issue at a post. Generally as long as you're doing the right thing and maintaining your integrity, you won't have anything to worry about

In California, you cannot use your (security) light bar on a public road. When I was on training for a private patrol company, another officer needed back up. My supervisor activated the light bar on the freeway and we hauled butt to get there. Quite honestly, if I were on a private security assignment and a fellow coworker needed emergency back up because his/her life was in danger, I would activate my lights and drive to the scene in a safe manner. If I were to be stopped by the police, I would hold myself accountable and accept whatever is coming to me. Take one for the team they say. A lot of us could simply say that we should just call 911 on their behalf, but the reality is we don’t know if the police are tied up on their own business and we don’t know what their ETA is. I’d rather lead by example. Something else to consider is that if a partner needs emergency back up, the police should be responding rapidly and should not be enforcing a vehicle code violation.

One exception exists in California. Private security can indeed use flashing amber lights on the highway when explicitly directed to do so by a peace officer.

when I was hired by the company I am currently working for, my boss told me that only use lights and sirens if it was life and death situation. Otherwise do not use it at all and just get there safety like anybody else that is trying to get to where they needed to be. All of our patrol vehicles are equipped with lights and sirens, but we rarely use any of them on private property or even on the public road because there is no need for them. well, maybe the PA and horn. I would use PA or horn, but that would be about it. If I was to give an example, it would be this. I was heading to one of my sites that I had to patrol and a white vehicle had accidentally ran a red light and stood still in the intersection. I was hoping that the person would know what to do, but from what I could see, the person was scared and confused about what to do next. I had my PA on me and so, I used and told the driver of that white vehicle to wait until it was safe to do so and then process with caution out of the intersection. But for light bars, I barely use it, even when I am on private property unless I need it to redirect or let them know that I am here. If a peace officer was there, that person would have gotten a ticket already.

If you happen upon an accident, and you have the tools, and the time, and communicate the emergency… I think it’s okay. I was the first person to arrive to an accident at an intersection in my personal car… no lights… but I put on my hazards and pointed folks to move over from my car. It is a high traffic intersection, and the police officer said thank you, and I was on my way. Once again, I think that security and police ought to have a more formal bond. In my experience that I shared, no one was hurt, all parties were safely off the road, but without me there, I was worried someone wouldn’t be paying attention and run into the accident. The places where we live, would all be better, if we all pitch in and help, in the appropriate way. Some cities have laws against civilians getting out of their vehicle and directing traffic. I stayed in my car, and still got the job done.

Unfortunately you see too many security officer wannabes that ruin any potential bond. They walk around with utility belts full of nonsense, and dress like a swat team member, even though they're guarding a hot dog stand. Security is critical and crucial for many people and places, but people have to remember their role.

Only time myself or any of my officers activate lights on public roads is if we stumble upon a car accident. I've assisted with a few car accidents thus far, and each time I was thanked by PD once they arrived to take over with blocking the portion of the road where the accident was. Once they arrive, I ask them if they need anything from me such as a statement, and if they don't need me, I deactivate my lights and leave. I don't hang around and try to get in the cop's way.

The police had no issue with what we did helping until they got there.

Pretty cool car and thanks for your service and bravery being the frist responder to that auto accident, Officer Hall! I was a security officer before with EMT training and in my free time I did neighborhood patrol in California on my bicycle: green and amber lights on both front and rear ends, red lights at back (but got away with two reds at front), and white headlights at front of bikes. In the months of November and December, I add flashing AA battery-powered Christmas lights wrapped on the frame of the bike. No blue lights to avoid being mistaken as law enforcement, except if Christmas lights have blue. One chilly December evening an elderly homeless man collapsed in the middle of the road so I hurried to block the road with my highly visible and heavily lighted bike. I was almost like a first responder using my bike to protect the scene and pulling a rainbow LED light saber mounted on the frame of my bike to direct traffic while wearing a reflective vest and with my phone clipped to my vest with the 911 dispatcher on speaker before a police cruiser arrived, followed by a fire truck and ambulance five minutes later. They all commented how cool and gorgeous my rolling festive Christmas tree was and after offering them a brief statement, the cops, firefighters and EMTs all told me, "Love your bike, bro! Thanks, we will take it from here." Good thing the old bum was OK. Another time after going through a ghetto in SF after doing special event security for a 49ers football game back when they were at Candlestick Park and on my way bicycling to the train station to go home, I witnessed a guy wearing a Kapernick jersey beating up his girlfriend so I called 911, told them to look for a bike with colorful flashing lights, and less than five minutes later, three SFPD police cars rocketed towards me code 3 but no sirens, saw me right away pointing to the location of the fight while I kept at least a 300 ft distance from the madman (though I could have legally pepper sprayed him as I was still wearing my security weapons and wearing body armor but chose not to as he was a big tall 6'5 220 lb white man and I was just a 5'7 170 lb Asian dude despite having bystanders who could side with me) and six cops jumped out sprinting to him and bringing the perp to the ground. I had to play it safe so from that time two officers dealt with the suspect, two talked to the victim (his gf), and the other two interviewed me and four other witness who also called 911. I overheard that the wife beater suspect was on probation for domestic violence and obviously in violation for that, was arrested for the DV and felony assault and battery, as he was smacking and punching her in the nose and side of the face. My creativity with the bicycle lights also drew attention of at least three cops from different departments who pulled over to me telling me it was so cool. Random drivers also shouted "Bike Party!!! Rolling Christmas Tree!" Again, as a fellow security professional, hats off and thank you for what you do, bro!

In the Florida statute so long as your lights are 50% Green and 50% amber you can activate them on a Public roadway so long as it's in performance of your duties a good example is the CIS Metrowest Public Safety program (Now owned by Guarda) will often assist motorists help OPD with accidents and even perform traffic control duties within the metrowest development however all of the roads are city maintained and thus public roads.

I stopped a vehicle theft the other night. Drove up on 2 dudes stealing a van. Activated my lights and pursued. One guy was on a bike and I followed him across the street onto other private property and then back onto public road. I scared the dude with my voice and got him to apologize so I gave up the pursuit. I was mainly on the public road outside the bounds of my clients property. Went back and recovered a bag of burglar tools. I was on the public road chasing a felon, but was right outside the property. Anyone have an opinion on that? I emailed the Vancouver WA Police a report and haven't heard back a peep. They've given up on property crime out here.

GA requires an emergency light permit for amber (utility), green (security), or purple (funeral)... white is not regulated. The permit cost $1 for a year. You cannot use lights outside of "official duty", I.E a funeral escort, while guarding a property, or doing utility/construction work. None of these lights give you right of way, they are a warning or "pay attention" light. Amber does require you to move over and slow down if possible, but not required. I have used amber/white for escorting, but I would never use them to intervene unless it was dark, bad weather, and there were truly a risk of secondary accident or injury. Not worth the risk of loss of permit or fine, or worse impersonation.

I have white traffic advisor lights in my vehicle that I used should I need to pull off the road, emergency or not. My car is black and I want to make sure other drivers see me should I be pulled over in the dark. I used my white traffic advisors and emergency flashers once on a two-lane public street around 05:15 one morning; it was dark and there were no street lights to illuminate the road. There had been a bad storm earlier and three LARGE black garbage cans had blown into the street blocking the street. I didn't see them until I was almost on them, and that's with my brights on. So, I pulled half-way off the road, hit the lights and got out to move them since they were a traffic hazard. Only one vehicle approached while I was doing this and they stopped until I cleared the street. Once moved, I got back in the car and turned the lights off and went on my way. I saw no problem in doing so as I was actually clearing a traffic hazard/obstruction in the dark.

It's not something we do often or ever recommend but in a pinch when time is of the essence they are good tools to have. By the way PD was right there and didn't even do anything. They know us pretty well out here so if we're going code to something they know it's for a good reason so they will either follow us to the situation or just leave us alone until we call them.

Laws vary from state-to-state is correct, but as all states, L.E. has discretionary powers to arrest/not arrest anyone w/ a few exceptions of 'aggravated factors,' felonies, etc. Back in the late-90s/Early-2k's, I have to admit I did it all the time as I had to jump from lot to lot as we managed 5 parking lots all weekend long. [The city cops didn't really seem to care much as I wasn't running vehicles off the road or conducting traffic stops.] Anyway, I will tell you green lights on a national level is absolutely NOT what you wanna have on in a major incident/MABAS, etc., as all the police/fire/EMS/hazmat teams will converge on to you as it indicates incident commander. Federal gov't security [even contract] gets to use red&blue as they're classified as federal L.E. ONLY whilst on-duty. In Texas, security was once able to use all-blue. In Wisconsin, blue is reserved for L.E. only & security contracting for any gov't can use all reds. In Illinois, red is reserved only for L.E. [minus Chicago P.D. gets to use all blue in an old law permitted any municipal P.D. of a pop. of 500k. or more to use it.] However, elsewhere in IL, blue is for VFFs. *Now, some snow plows beginning to be allowed blue lights due to its hi-viz across some states. Weather chasers & spotters use all amber & clear lights now. [*Remember, Twister?...] At end of day, it's a matter of deploying some basic common sense, complying w/ state laws for vehicle codes & ensuring you're not giving the wrong impression of impersonation. For me, I'm partially colorblind & unable to tell the dif between red/yellow or green/blue flashing LEDs, esp. by day. LED lighting does not resonate true white & the distortion/intensity makes it hard for me to see. Lastly, my lightbar used when I first began in private security was an all-light, Streethawk halogen rotator bar in 1998.

We are based in Georgia. One must have a permit to operate warning lights on their cars. By law security lights are to be amber. We do not operate our warning lights on the public roadway unless there are exigency circumstances. Usually a motor vehicle crash with injury, or obstacles in the roadway making it hazardous to traffic. While doing so we will make notification to the patrolling jurisdiction; local PD, Georgia State Patrol, etc. If it is safe to do so we will also offer aid to the injured. If there is a crash without injury, and vehicles are drivable, we won’t stop. As for using sirens, only on private property and/or private roads. Very seldom we’ll we use it there. To get attention the air horn is usually all that is needed.

Not unless you want an impersonator charge and to go away for awhile. There is no reason to activate lights because they serve no authorive purpose. That's why I dont put lights on my cars, you're asking for a charge

The situation I mentioned in the video you will be completely fine ,the key is calling it in the dispatch then when officers arrive they take over and u go about your merry way , they actually are very appreciative

@@commanderhall848 Still to risky, all it takes Is the wrong cop to ruin your business. Gotta be prepared and cautious. I cant waste the money on lights if there really isn't a point to them. People aren't afraid of the lights, or the cars it's abit much, but you like what you like.

@@I_Am_Warden you're missing the point bro. Those lights are not to scare people, but to let others know that you are there and they are able to see you from far away. My patrol car has lights on them, but I only use the traffic light to redirect others coming from behind us. Light bars are useful, it just depends on how you are using them.

Better pray that a security guard stops to assist you if you ever got into an accident, cause I'll tell you right now, with that attitude, I'd keep on driving like nothing happened if I saw you trapped in a wrecked vehicle...
