Space marines would certainly stand there and fight against the overwhelming odds, however they are also intelligent and have other weapons at their disposal to deal with huge waves of enemies. Heavy bolters, flamers, grenades, plasma guns, thunder hammers, giant claws, power swords, and you can't forget about librarians. Guardsman probably would've had lemun russ tanks, their mortar tanks, and possibly a million troopers.

Forget all of those tanks: the PDF would have POSTED MEN ON THE BATTLEMENTS of the first fort so they could provide cover-fire for the SM who chose to stand outside the walls! (With RPG launchers and mortar-teams inside, you saw what those grenade walkers did to the zed, now picture that but coming from inside the walls and raining hell outside them for close to 500 yards as the zed TRY to close-the-gap...

At top-level command positions that's a factor, but that's because they're trying to direct the fighting across whole worlds or even multiple star-systems, which, yeah, fuckups are inevitable at that scale, and in some cases might LOOK-LIKE a fuckup to the boots-on-the-ground people, but actually sending those men to certain death was critical to force the enemy to react to it in a way that will SAVE millions of other troopers: the ones on that mission just happened to get the short-straw.

@@alexanderjarukYeah, the lack of properly deployed heavies was what really killed the Imperium here. You don't fight hordes of low-quality melee-only enemies with Space Marines holding regular bolters. Those are precision weapons to take out individual enemies, not crowd control. You deploy a wall of Astartes to buy time, much like the setup of battle 1 - but IMMEDIATELY back them up. The frontline marines are only there to hold the zombies off. The killing work is for heavy artillery, orbital bombardments, whatever you have on hand that goes BOOOOM. Alternatively, literally a tank, regardless of type, would be able to plough through the zombie horde unscathed and rack up kills without even firing a shot - of course, they can do that too, for extra kills. Not quite as effective as area bombardment, but will eventually get the job done.

Speaking lore accurately the only way those zombies could've killed a single space marine in that first battle would be if so many bodies got piled on top of em that their armour would be crushed. They would also move around and would have no issue outmanouvering the zombies as they're faster. Of course lore accurate 40k things are rarely in any game, official tabletop 40k space marines are pathetically weak compared to the ones shown here. And it does make sense, it would be ridiculous for the tabletop game to have a hundred guardsmen balanced against a single space marine.

Part of the issue for the Ultramarines was that as the bodies piled up, they started having to shoot up. Since the Ultramarines shots had a chain reaction that kept going for a bit, it severely limited their capabilities as their shots weren't nearly as effective

Space marines in uebs 2 seem to shoot completly off from where they are intended to shoot. Go first person with one and try and fight all the zombies. You can't shoot the ones infront. I find setting them to attack allows them to get the space needed to shoot them, or augment with guardsmen

The reason why there is such a definitive tipping point is because there isn't a choke point, which means that once the imperials are surrounded, the zombies can attack from all side. There are millions of zombies, so when each zombie gets killed a fresh one takes it place, but they will inflict a small amount of damage. As such, eventually the imperial units start to die and as they die, the total DPS goes down (as in these battles, basically every marine is engaged whilst the majority of the zombies are not) whilst the zombies DPS stays the same or goes up. So yes, the longer the battle the goes on, the worse the imperials do. This is why so many militaries (even to this day, just look at Russias human wave tactics) don't deploy all their forces at once and ensure to keep stronger forces fresh. You've discovered the reserve.

Zombies win on open ground due to overwhelming numbers. Bottlenecks cancel numbers. I think the unrealistic piles of corpses are what ruined things. Realistically, it would have blocked out the zombies, but instead it pushed the defenders and made them spaz out. Hard to tell because of the speed, sadly.

A full chapter's worth of battle brothers deployed on an open field would maneuver effectively and never even get touched by a zombie horde that's approaching from 1 direction only. Even IF the zombies get close, the chainsword will slice through them like butter while a zombie has no way to even scratch space marine armor. The only way I can see marines die in this kind of battle is if they get swarmed from all directions at once and then buried under so many bodies that they cannot dig themselves out and suffocate.

Lore-wise the zombies should not have a chance. Spacemarine is a demigod clad in completely imprevious armour wich is safe even against most of Fenrises local fauna (we are talking trolls with acidous blood able to heal almost any vound, Wolfs size of a van, bears, bulls etc. NOTHING OF THAT can compromise spacemarine armour. And because the spacemarine weights (with the armour on) in the levels to be weighted in TONES, it is higly unlikely, siple piling, or triping legs would work on them. Standard equipment is bolters with ammo, number of granades and either a battle knife (machete sized), or close combat weapons. But with the speed and weight of his arms, spacemarine could bludgeon and chop the zombies in thousands with no weapon too. There is no way the marines would get the zombie virus - environmentaly sealed armour (basicaly doubles as EVA suit and diving suit) and their inbuild extreme imunity to any pathogens would probably not allow their contamination by the virus.

A death spiral was inevitable. As a matter of frontage the marines are using half there force. Once the first ones start dying, half of them are already damaged, so they're going to start dying faster, and as that happens, their offensive capacity diminishes, which compounds the problems. As to the zombies, even though they're dying at a faster rate, their ranks are so deep that their frontage consist of a tiny, tiny fraction of their forces and their losses are practically meaningless. A line dies, a whole new fresh line steps up and their actual fighting capacity stays consistent until the end.

I don't understand the arbitrary patterns of people using "millions" versus "thousands." Sheer numbers will when. In additions, the entire defensive strategy was crap. No thought to it other than "plop them here." The first battle, a line makes no sense. In the second battle, half the chainsaw marines were just standing around. Even in the fortress where the defender had an advantage, there was no one up on the wall. If you'd put the mech ranged units there, they would have easily done some serious damage. And the tanks should never have been stationary, but mobile. I really wish the people who did these simulation battles had a sense of tactics.

Deployment was terrible. Nice idea to have carry over reinforcements but at last make the battle have some strategy included in the setup.

Wait a second they sent a few hundred space marines to delay an attack for the fort to prepare why not just keep the marines in the fort while preparing? Would that not make more sense it does to me
