I love the Speedwoofer. It's the best sub I've heard under $500. I've heard both the Speedwoofer and the SB-1000 Pro, not back to back unfortunately, but I was more impressed with the RSL. Audioholics provides good sub measurements, and despite the manufacturer ratings, their measurements showed stronger sub-bass from the Speedwoofer than the SB1000, which does line up with what I heard (in a similar, if not the same, room). A.H.'s tests showed the Speedwoofer outputting 97db at 20hz and the SB-1000 Pro outputting 88db at 20hz "before heavy distortion sets in." RSL claims 22hz FR for the Speedwoofer, and SVS claims 20hz FR for the SB1000 Pro. RSL's willing to look worse on paper to be as scrupulously honest with their customers as possible. I think that says a lot.

I first discovered RSL back before they started back up with the new stuff. I found an old pair of cg6 speakers for $20.00. When I got them I was amazed by the build quality, I started looking for any and all models I could find. I have since built a collection of 21 different models. I have gotten to know Howard and his son Joe over the years and they are both great people with a love for music, it’s reproduction and their customers. RSL is a stand up company with awesome products at very reasonable prices. Don’t be reluctant to try them out, the return policy is solid and there is no BS if you decide they are not for you. My 2 cents!

I found some CG6As at a goodwill in Hollywood a few years back and had the same expereince, I have a 4.1 CG6A system in my bedroom with a CG25 as a center channel and a Speedwoofer 10S MKII as the sub. Its cool how well those speakers were made back in the day and being able to see that level of quality continued through the modern CG25/Speedwoofer.

The real beauty of RSL products is the quality of the drivers used and the cabinet construction (besides the sound!). This new line forgoes the beautiful gloss cabinets of past models to lower the cost......simply put, you will never (and I mean never) get more for your money than you do from RSL.

I just purchased my first real home theater system a couple of months ago. After much research, I ended up getting RSL speakers with an Onkyo TX-RZ50. I got two Speedwoofer MkII subs, went with five CG23M for my ear levels, and four CG3M for my height channels. I've been very pleased with this setup. Movies sound great! Music sounds great! I really like the immersive music experience I can get from this setup. Even listening to 2-ch music through the left and right CG23M's sounds pretty good. The whole setup including the receiver was just over $3k during the holiday sale. Very affordable for a nice home theater setup.

Great to see RSL getting some love. I have a 2.2 setup with 2 Speedwoofers and 2 CG25s. All driven by my Cambridge Audio CXA81. It’s a killer system. The RSL speakers are built like tanks and look great. I went to the RSL website looking for a subwoofer. Left ordering a Speedwoofer and the CG25. I figured I could return them if I didn’t like them. I kept them. About 6 months later I added another Speedwoofer and it was the best audio upgrade I ever made. 2.2 FTW.

The speakers and the subwoofer are essentially versions of a transmission line cabinet. Which is a good thing! The slots look like ports, but there's another diagonal baffle inside the cabinet that sets up the TL. The subwoofer driver and the amp are very impressive.

Many thanks for your perspectives Neil. Very helpful.
@Pentenfi
@Pentenfi Жыл бұрын
I am not sure if that is correct. I mean that with no disrespect, I actually wanted to figure out what their "compression guide technology" means. The canal is way to short to be a TL, especially for the subwoofer. They are all bass reflex designs, but there are constructions where separate chambers are connected via slots serving as bassreflex ports. This induces multi chamber bass reflex boxes. The most common being dual chamber bass reflex. I have seen that in the DIY community here and there. But I don't think that's quite what they are doing...
@NeilBlanchard
@NeilBlanchard Жыл бұрын
@@Pentenfi There's a lot of variations, and overlap in designs. I have designed several transmission line speakers, and the "modern" way these are done looks very much like the RSL speakers. The closed end being a bit away from the center of the driver "folds" the effective length is increased. The terminus opening is the full width of the TL, so it mass loads that air, and actually moves in and out; rather than just being a Helmholtz resonator.

@@NeilBlanchard Thanks for sharing your perspective on the subject! I would be curious on what types of loudspeakers you have owned or recommend? My newest pair that I currently own has blown me away from all others, especially for the price....Acoustic Energy 100MkII's. They also deserve good electronics to know what they are capable of and adding a sub-woofer is a must...I'm using 2 REL's. My two cents!

Bought my first CD player at Rogers Sound Lab in Torrance, CA circa 1989 or so. I remember drooling over all their speakers and equipment there. Always wanted their speakers but could not afford them at the time. Glad their speaker business is going strong.

Yeah I used to LOVE that store in Torrance. I was 1st introduced to RSL speakers about 1981, when my buddy in High School showed me his/those RSL speakers he had in his bedroom, and I knew immediately they were quality stuff. Although I never purchased that Brand back then (was too young, only 15 at the time), I had always wanted to, but they were just too out-of-reach...price wise (However, I DO now own the RSL Speedwoofer...very pleased!)

I got the mk II when they first came out, to replace an aging 12” M&K sub. Very surprised that a 10” can do what it does. Pleasingly musical when paired with my Forte 1’s, and enough impact to make a nice difference with movies. If you take the time to set it up and place it properly (instead of just sticking it in a corner) you will be very impressed. An insane value at that price. When they get more in stock I will be adding a second one.

I have a couple of the original RSL Speedwoofers in my home theater setup and they have worked great. If I remember correctly, the wireless receivers are built into the subs and it’s a nice option. I ended up placing them close enough to the receiver to just wire them up but I like having the option to place them anywhere near a power outlet.

Randy love your content! if these are half as good as RSL used to be they'll sound great. Back in the late 1980's i bought my first hifi system at the RSL shop in Los Angeles. I was super skeptical when the staff keep steering me towards their own speakers vs the brand name products which they stocked too (JBL, JAMO, Infinity, Cerwin Vega, Etc.). When i listened to them i immediately purchased the RSL speakers. They sounded and looked better at less than half the price. Glad to see theyre back.

I just put together a home theater (well, 80% music room with an occasional movie) using an RSL Speedwoofer mkII paired to Focal Chora fronts. Coming from a pretty decent Bic sub to the RSL I was blown away by what I’d been missing. I knew bass was important, and I knew there was more to it than just volume and extension, but good grief did the RSL make a believer out of me. And at $450 it may not be years before I can afford to add a second sub and really take it to another level.

@NosEL34
@NosEL34 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that sounds like a nice "budget" setup. Some type of dsp for your sub will make a difference. I had a pair of the R200's with a regular style sub and it was good, but when I matched it with a sub with dsp capabilities it made a good difference. With my room the 40hz frequencies were about 15db louder than 30 & 50hz areas. Being able to control that and get everything a little flatter makes a better soundstage. I even used Dirac for a little while with the Polk's, the Polk's don't really need much help, pretty flat frequency response, but these DSP's can really help with all types of subs.

The RSL is the Oz equivalent of your American Legion and prior to the war in Afghanistan, the clubs were a haunt for aging boomers, veterans and others. I upgraded from a Dayton Sub-1000 to the RSL Speedwoofer 10s last year. Much tighter and cleaner bass. Granted, I would expect that going from a $150 sub to a $400 sub. The thing with RSL subs is they release them in production batches, so when they open a batch for sale you have to get in quick to get yours. I only had to wait like 3 weeks before I could reserve one, but that was a year ago. I don't know what the batch release schedule is like now.

The port looks like it's going to chuf at low frequencies. Play a 20hz test tone. If you hear any kind of turbulence. It's not good. Sometimes this can be not as noticeable with distance or with a higher set crossover. I had an older Polk powered sub that had a very similar box design. Any time on movies and music that hit a low note. You could hear that thing breathing away. No distortion though. It was very musical with the higher bass notes. But it sounded terrible with lack of low bass and didn't pressurize the room at all for movies. Oh believe me I did the sub crawl. That thing just didn't like it low. It was a single 12 with 300 watt RMS amp. I don't recall the model. Can't wait for your review of this RSL sub. It has high level speaker inputs! That's becoming a rarity these days.

Went with two of these RSL 10s in a 2.2 setup - each connected to a Schiit Vidar via the speaker level connections. Dual Vidars, Dual Speedwoofers - it’s a winning combo. They hit real low and the price was reasonable.

I have bought and re-foamed a few sets of vintage RSL Magnificent speakers from the 80s. They were built well, had nice components and were solid wood and heavy. I loved them all, but the looks were the reason I sold them. Light oak and rounded corners did not fit my decor. But I loved the sound and quality.

Looking forward to this review. Might be an ideal subwoofer to anchor the bass in a powered speaker 2.1 music setup where I'm feeding them from a DAC such as the Topping DX3 Pro+ headphone dac/amp where you can select output from Topping's back panel RCA's to the RSL's line-in and then line out to the two active satellites and still use the Toppings remote for volume levels. A High Pass Filter would be very desirable. Other subs that offers similar connectivity and a High Pass Filter are the Emotiva Airmotiv SE8 and the SE12. .

Quite nicely done. Sometime back I saw your review of car speakers used in a room environment put in a proper speaker box, that got me thinking... it is more or less the same architecture used to make in wall and in ceiling speakers, so requesting a review of some ceiling or in wall speakers.

Thank you for the video. I was wondering why you had not talked about RSL before. Glad you got to know their products and share it with the rest of us. I would be curious to know how you like the sound quality. We have had their 10S Mark I subwoofer for about four years in a 5.1 set up. I initially bought their CG23 speakers for my L/R/C and a pair of the ceiling speakers. About two or so years ago I upgraded my L/R/C to their latest CG25 speakers and totally happy with the set up. We listen to music a lot and most of the time I do not even turn the subwoofer on as the CG25 speakers have plenty of bas already. SVS was my first choice for "reasonably priced" speaker system. However, they cost quite a bit more than the RSL equivalents. I think I have the best of both worlds, excellent sounding speakers at a very reasonable cost. I particularly love the wireless function built into their subs. All you have to do is to buy the wireless sender dongle unit and attach it to your receiver's sub output. The receiver part is already built into the subwoofer. This allows total freedom for sub placement. I had an issue with the sub when I got it first. It died on me after a week or so of use. I called their customer service and they offered to exchange it for me. They also asked if I would be willing to swap the board in the back so we don't have to send speakers back and forth. I opted for the swap. They sent me a new board in a few days and the swapping took no more than 15 minutes. I have had no issues with the sub since then.

I've had the original 10s for a while now and love it. It replaced an nht classic 10 subwoofer that barely worked in the same room. If I had the space, I would buy a second one.

The driver looks familiar because its highly likely, not same size driver but same manufacturer, as Airmotiv's Lf driver, so different sizes same materials; perhaps you just didnt want to mention them during this video either. Thats why the Lf driver is recognizable though, a nice unit. Some quality products for sure. *thumbsup*
@everydayaudiophile
@everydayaudiophile Жыл бұрын
similar looking drivers but neither Emotiva or RSL do off the shelf parts. Both companies make their own driver, motor structure, frames, etc. The only similarity is the physical appearance of the cone material. I had a pair of B1s that I took apart to verify this against my CG3s

Seems like we are in the golden age of cheap speakers! Randy, would you consider reviewing the Mission Lx-3 Mk II? They are just $299 on Amazon for a big bookshelf with a 6 1/2” midbass and a beefy looking 4th-order crossover.

Cheapaudioman, enjoying your content. I am an audio novice and hoping you can give some advice. I am looking at a Fosi Audio amp BT30D based on your review. I have some Paradigm speakers that the specs say "compatible with 8 ohms". I want to know if the Fosi that says 4 ohms can work with the Paradigm speakers?

I have a pair of RSL 10s subs to go along with my Polk r700's. I really like them but feel they are a bit sloppy for music with the Polks. They matched my Linton 85th really well. Even with Dirac/REW and properly time aligned and crossed-over they feel pretty slow just for music. For movies, they sound VERY good. I recently plugged the ports (I dont think this will hurt them as I have the gain at less than 15%) which made a big difference. Yes I lost some low end but it really tightened them up. For the price, I think they are phenomenal, but I will be moving to something else when I am able. Please note, there is wireless lag I asked them about it and it was between 12-20 ms, Apologies, I cannot remember.

I'm a n00b to all of this, so please bear 🐻 with this question: Why is phase control important? Like why would I want the bass to sound like it's coming from my speakers versus the subwoofer? Wouldn't that scare me to think I'm over driving the speakers?
