Don't the cheap audio fans have dreams? I am surprised that this many people complain about prices on stuff you show. There isn't that much stuff under $200 that is worth talking about. $699 is cheap in the big picture. Newbies need to aspire to something greater than Chinese repro's. IMO

Glad you talked about how adding the subwoofer makes the sound more "expansive". It's really impressive and movies, as well as music. Especially with the modern music, which use a lot more of the lower frequency range.

I ended up buying the Speedwoofer 10S MKiii because of your review. I was on the fence about the SVS SB1000 because of comments about its limited output, so I started considering the PB1000, but that's $300 more. The RSL came in at the right price point and the reviews were absolutely raving.

agree 100% Randy... I have used Subs dialed with my fronts for 3 decades.. its not about the boom, but adding richness and punch to the music. Only time folks know my subs are on is when I turn them off!!! no boom-boom.. only for action movies. One of my set-ups has the RSL10" speedwoofer... and its awesome, we call it our "mighty-mouse"!!

I used two of these bad boys in a friends basement rig. I pre-wired the whole loudspeaker system and installed the speakers. It's a big room, UHD projector, 120" screen, mid tier Atmos receiver and matching tweeter/woofer speakers everywhere. The best thing about the RSL product is the affordable wireless setup that allows for easy experimentation with placement. Not cheap but very musical and they boom when needed.

I don’t have a subwoofer but I am on the market.. I was wandering about using one wirelessly for a desktop PC gaming/audio setup.. Do you feel your subs “lack” at all using them wirelessly? I have sort of a unique game room layout that I may use 2 subs for and place them in opposite corners, which would translate to some long wire runs, of which I’m completely ocd about so I’d have to drill a hole in the wall, run them up to the ceiling to the attic, across the room and down to the source.. A pain in the ass that I don’t want to deal with but I thought would be necessary to get the best experience.. I’ve always thought a wireless sub wouldn’t translate to a great experience, but maybe that’s me getting old lol
@michaelmoskovitz5680
@michaelmoskovitz5680 Жыл бұрын
@@rahliE777I chose wireless because I wanted the flexibility to place the subwoofers where they fit the decor. I never auditioned them with cables. I set the subwoofer levels with women's vocal music music, and haven't touched the settings since. While I have NOT had any extended listening sessions in my friends basement lossy music via Spotify and Pandora sounds fine. Lossless Blu-rays are amazing. IIRC RSL has a generous return policy if you're not please. Just to clarify the basement is a large open plan room with 11.5" ceilings, hence the two (2) RSL 10SMKII subs. Take a look at the Brent Butterworth's New York Time Wirecutter review.

Great info in this video!! I just recently picked up a Dayton 12” sub to add to the 8” ported and required high level inputs. My goal was to fill in under 55hz down to as low as possible which the Dayton 12” doesn’t do. However it does add volume and depth and overall bass to my HT setup!! I had both RSL mkII in the cart but couldn’t get enough $$ to purchase at that time. 🎉. That said, my next goal is to starve and save until I can get the RSL 12”!! This is such an awesome deal!! $799 plus free shipping, remote control AND high and low level inputs, PLUS built in EQ?!?! For me this is the best ported sub I could ask for!!!! (Live in a townhouse so sound levels would need to be adjusted depending on time of day etc) 🎉 I researched for weeks and compared everything with high level inputs and the RSL 12S is my dream sub! 🎉 I WILL have one some day! 🎉 At any rate, point of comment is to say that after days and weeks of research, the 12S is def the best bang for buck under $800!! No question! 🎉

Totally right, Randy. Esperanza Spalding describes what she does as a bass player as setting up the dance floor for other musicians. A subwoofer does the same thing for home stereo. A wide and deep soundstage has nowhere to go without a solid low end.

I have pretty big floorstanders, but after watching a bunch of Paul McGowan videos, I decided I needed subs. A couple of BK subs later, and my speakers were transformed. It's about bass quality rather than just quantity. It also improves the mid range. If you have the subs dialled in properly, you would never know a sub was there until you take it, or them, away. It's a fantastic way to improve your musical experience without splashing out on brand new speakers.

15:20 to fifteen thirty: no truer words have been spoken, at least as of mid-2023. I've been into home theater for years. I love Hsu subs, and only Hsu and SVS had subs that could realistically dig down to or below 20Hz at prices below $2000 with both output and fidelity. But I really have to check out the 12S because all stats and reviews seem to indicate that the 12S can match or beat the performance of Hsu and SVS subs for half the cost or less. And for those that don't know, that is staggeringly cheap compared to REL, JTR, PSA, JLA, Perlisten, etc. who all sell some of the best-performing subs in existence right now, but you'll be paying 4 or 5 figures per sub!

So if you are using the HPF'd main pair output from the sub to drive Front L/R, aren't you giving up the pseudo-surround effect processing of the Syn ? Since that already has a cutoff of 80Hz on its sub-specific output, why not use that, and then HPF the Front L/R separately, after the Syn direct output?

I've never been able to smoothly integrate my SVS 13 inch sub with my main tower speakers. I think the problem is that my speakers already have excellent bass and the SVS cuts off at about 20 Hz (they say 18 Hz) so it doesn't add much to bass response. To be fair, SVS recommended the larger sub for my speakers but it cost twice as much so I opted for the smaller cheaper one.

I have what 15 or 20 years back (or more?) was £1000 worth of REL subwoofer, a 12" driver in a sealed box. It never gets used now because when it's tufned on & dialled in at 40, 60 or 80'hz or any x'over point & i stand near a wall, it seems to really add & help the music sound great, really great! But as soon as I get a foot or 15"inches max away from any side wall,the bass disappears like Prince Andrew in his mum's basement, & graduallt turning it's Vol' up just makes it sound awfully boomy all of a sudden from no bass. In fact, when I'm on the listening sofa aka stereo sweet spot, it sounds like less bass when the sub is turned on & more bass when turned off, it subtracts bass for the listening position regaurdless where I put that 2 position phase switch, it's either "total phase shift on or none" i.e. zero degree or a 180'deg shift but I may need a 90' or 120' degree shift or 116'degree shift tho dialled-in by ear to suit speaker matched listening for anywhere in room, except a foot near a damm prerimeter wall!! but i cannot do that with my (nor any?) REL. I notice other brands have a completely variable phase shift throughout 1 whole sine-wave of 360'degree or half of one to shift upto 180'deg but variably so, not just a 180'deg shift or none at all as in my Rel Q400E. I've tried moving the sub, the listening sofa but not allowed to keep the sub too far from the rear wall or corners. I've sworn to myself to get rid of this bloody REL Q400E with it's dumb phase shift choice & I've sworn to common sense that my next Sub will have a completely variable phase shift to cover 1 whole sine-wave so it will blend Anywhere in the room, not everywhere but blend at the listening seat, with my main speaker pair. I've not heard anyone talk of phase shift limitations that can force you to place the sub in the most inconvenient positions if it doesn't blend by sheer chance if plonked between or to the side of one speaker, or a corner, my room shape does not suit the limited phase shift of this REL, period.

Sibilance of the Lambs FTW. If RSL adds a dual-opposed subwoofer variant, you could then safely rest your nice Chianti on it.

I'm also a big fan of SVS, though I've had duals from a company called totem, and PSB and some others. I think duals are really great for making the low end feel impactful regardless of where you're sitting. I've been doing duals with my towers in my 2 channel setup and really like it too. I'm debating going to ported for home theater - you mentioned moving from sealed to ported recently. Is the size and cost worth it? It's probably entirely dependent on my own preference, but I still appreciate hearing others.

I have a modest budget sub that only goes down to 35Hz, but it's transformed music for me. 'Intergalactic' now sounds like Godzilla is breakdancing in my living room. Also tested out that Korn / Skrillex track, finally heard what you were talking about.

I got one of these when they first released them. I have towers that go down to 33Hz, and find that a 40Hz cross over works best for me. What I love about it is the volume remote. I usually leave it in Reference mode and then dial up the volume for movies about 3 dB and then roll it back down when listening to music. So easy! Love the channel. Wondering if I can use my Sith Port Lube on this sub? Any advice?

I walked into a budget AVR and am currently researching speakers for it. It would be going into a roughly 12x12 ft room. What would be a better option: smaller speaker and a sub or a larger pair of bookshelf speakers? Would be used mostly for music.

I seriously need a subwoofer update since my decade-old Velodyne shorted out somehow, but I want something more than Ash Black, Piano Black, and Gloss White for finish choices! Was recently trying get get my hands on a Klipsch R-112SW in the cherry finish to match my RP160Ms, but the seller was just too proud of what they had. Even Hsu Research ended their Rosenut options, dagnabit... Bring back the wood finishes!

Subs are a “must have” for home theater; don’t enjoy movies without it. Not so much imho for stereo, if you have a serious amount of cash wrapped up in an “appropriate” speakers, amp, and sonic environment. I know a lot of people don’t agree with this, but if you have a lot of money wrapped up in full range speakers, and amplifiers and quality sources for stereo reproduction, and the place to det it up, the extra expense of getting subs set up, in my mind is not worth the extra expense; if you want to do the speakers on stands with the high pass filter and subs for stereo, then that’s another story. That said, this $800 sub is way 😎.👨🏻

I'd recommend 2 of those subs. Also if you go big like an 18 inch sub but your Maines are 6 inch speakers. There's going to be a hole in the middle of your sound. You're better off looking at 10's or 12's. I wouldn't over look a dual bandpass speaker either. dual 12's will kick like 15's in an open box. A passive filter in the main speaker line can be used too. The correct filter is going to depend on what size subs you're using and what size Mains you're running. With 5 inch mains I'd guess at somewhere from 80 to 125Hz to the main speakers. you'll have to determine whats best for your setup. There's no cookie cutter solution.
@Nick_2i
@Nick_2i Жыл бұрын
A good 18 inch should be fine regardless of how big your speakers are. I think an 18 inch driver shouldnt start beaming until well past 400hz that said id rather have two 12s than just one 18
@rickhunt3183
@rickhunt3183 Жыл бұрын
@@Nick_2i but it won't be fine if your mains are 10 inches or smaller. Your sound will have a hole in the middle where 125 to 250 Hz should be. The 18's will produce very little above 80 Hz and roll off about 6 or 12 decibel per octave until cutoff. Before you settle for 12's. I would encourage you to listen to a pair of 18's. They will blow your socks off if you have the power available. The bass that 18's or 15's produce without effort will be a strain for 12's. The cones will struggle to produce the same bass and the stress will produce more distortion, especially at higher volumes. That's not to say Im against 12's especially if you have 2 or 4 per channel. If you're a metal head, or you listen to AC/DC you'll be impressed. My friend had some Bose 901's with with 8 4 1/2 in drives and they would produce low bass but they weren't impressive to me when I listened to them. I invited him to hear my speakers that consisted of 4 15's in each box and when the bass kicked in I thought he was going into labor. The Bose sounded good but they didn't have the impact that my speakers delivered. I would also encourage you to build your own speakers. Play safe.

Subwoofers add depth when done right! You always have great caveat call outs. I think when you set where the speakers frequency response rolls off and you let the sub blend in… good things happen. Unless it's very small speakers I will NEVER use high-pass filter on them. Bookshelf is ok, bigger floorstanding I don't touch it. The sub is supposed to add in where the room makes the speakers roll off. Even if a speaker is rated to go down to 10Hz it will most likely never do it any good because most normal rooms wont allow that. Or if the amp is weak. It requires some juice to hit the lows good. I also don't adjust the sub level to the music.. I adjust it where it plays like it should on everything and never touch it again. And tone controls on amps/recivers are always disabled if possible.
