First things first......I can't believe you didn't tighten Max's harness to fit - in order to tame that WILD BEAST!!!! But really, glad things turned out ok for your son. Regarding trainers, unfortunately it's prevalent no matter the field. It's incredibly discouraging and disheartening. In the IT industry, there are entirely too many "Bosses" versus "Leaders". I'm shocked on a daily basis regarding people that are placed in the position of leading people, that have had zero training, education, or experience in managing people. A majority of them are put in place due to knowledge of managing process, leading to incredibly decreased morale. Anyhow, wishing your son a speedy recovery, and hope your return to Prime is all you hoped it would be. Glad you have a good trainer lined up.

I can relate to this topic. I too was at Prime a few years back. And indeed had the unfortunate opportunity to be on a truck with a Trainer that didnt give a s*** about anything but money. And often was very abrasive. The last confrontation we had that did it for me was I made to our destination and he woke up and immediately coming out of the birth started yelling and spewing bs about nothing. I just said I've made it to our stop and my shift is over. He did not want to hear that. So he rambled on more with even more abrasive spewing. So I told him, I think the best thing for me to do is get off this truck before someone gets hurt. I packed my stuff and immediately got off his truck. Walked into the truck stop resturant and asked the waitress if I could hang out here for a while so I could communicate with my fleet manager. I spent the night in a hotel across the street paid for out of my pocket and the next day had a new trainer. He was awesome btw! Had a great time learning and driving while with him. Unfornately toward the end of training he wanted to take a vacation which in his defense was schedualed for some time. Even before I came aboard to train. So basically I had 2 choices. Either stay on his truck sitting in a parking lot in Chicago for 6 days or a motel at my own expense. Because the training facility in springfield did not have any spare rooms. And Prime did not want to put me on another truck. So after 2 days in a hotel and burning thru the money in my wallet knowing it would in fact be another 2 weeks before I seen another paycheck well I did what any logical thinking human would do. I called the wife and said he come get me! That was the end of my time at Prime Inc!!

Hi Mr Chuck, I'm with Prime, upgraded last week, it has not been to good for me but I guess it's a learning process, I'm making a lot of mistakes. My trainer was a great trainer, he cares for his students, he paid all my food and snacks, he bought my first set of tools I needed for my truck. The good thing is he only trains women he said that he does it because he knows it's more difficult for us to find a respectful trainer. I was blessed with him as my trainer 😀😀😀!!!

Chuck, If trucking just saved half the first the year drivers they lose, there wouldn't be a shortage. I've always said, it's training and driver support that makes the difference. I wasn't a real rookie I had been driving log and dump truck in the mountains of NC. I went to Apple Valley Tech in Wisconsin, that was the best move I could have made, then on to a company with an awesome trainer. That set me up for a 30 year career, that I enjoyed.

@TheTulsaTrucker5 жыл бұрын
Driving a truck is about 20% of this profession the other 80 is what’s above the shoulders. When people are not right up stairs they shouldn’t be training or be in the position of authority but because of the high turnover in OTR anyone is pretty much allowed to train now days but that’s changing next February. Will be required to have 2 years OTR experience before you can train. It’s a federal law.
@Chris_L0345 жыл бұрын
@@TheTulsaTrucker considering the name of the game is otr 'driver' i think your estimation of 20% is a little low. as far as the turn over rate goes the odds are stacked against a driver. in so many different ways.

Unfortunately allot of “trainers” are not in it to train you but to use you for your clock and the miles you can drive for them. You are cheap labor at .14 a mile. I wouldn’t go to any company that has its training based on miles vs days. There are days you sit doing nothing and it drags out the training. Prime use to be a company I would recommend but 50k miles which is close to 4 months is just ridiculous in my opinion. Good luck to you sir!!

Great video man! I hired on with prime, and got three bad trainers in a row, which ultimately lead me to leave prime. It didn’t take me long to figure out that not only were there super trucker‘s, but so-called super trainers! Prime has an excellent training program, except for their super trainers. I’ve been hired on with CFI based out of Joplin, mo. And got a first rate trainer right off the bat! Negative, a good trainer will take their students home around the 10k to 15k Mark and go out and run solo for a week and come back by and pick them up. Now you won’t be paid anything for that week but you can get home time even if your trainer wants to stay out. If your trainer is saying you can’t have home time then he or she is one of the bad ones out there. You just need to let your FM you want to take 7 days of home time and to route you by the house. Your trainer is not your boss the FM is. He is your trainer plain and simple.

See the tunnel’s end-goal but also the ‘root’ (which is oft’ the only true anchor when no light is seen yet at end of the tunnel) - that led you to make the decision to go into this to start with. If you can do that, tie a knot in it and hang on. Then find out more by following protocol up the chain and go home - DO IT! Remember to do it with grace and decorum and not with an: “I was right - you were wrong” attitude. Don’t feel bad about needing to go home. You will be fine.

Charlie doesn’t ring a bell sorry, make sure you interview with your trainer. Ask them lots of questions. Do they do both PSD and TNT. You want a trainer that is going to do both. Find out how much home time are you going to get. 50k miles is now taking close to 4 months. That’s a long time to be in a box smaller than your bathroom. You do not have to just take any trainer so get one that you think will work best for you. Good luck sir.

Nice to meet you Lowell! I always enjoy visiting Norman when I come down to catch a game. Welcome to Prime. Being well prepared knowing the Pre-Trip and being ready to test and pass your permit on Tuesday goes along way. If you can bring a laptop so you can do the CBT’s in your room instead of having to do them on the PC’s in the classrooms. As a family man it was definitely a ruff first week being away from my family but having that support from my wife and sons was huge. The training will be the hardest thing you have ever experienced unless you have been in the military. There will be days you will say this isn’t for me. Just push through. Something happens after you pass your CDL test and you are now an official truck driver. The TNT phase will be another adjustment but just know it’s only 3-4 months and make sure you get some home time during that journey. It will help you recharge even if it’s only a few days. Once you get your own truck then you can run things your way. I can say trucking can be very rewarding and you will see things that you can’t experience driving the same roads to work everyday. Everyday is different and your constantly waking up to a new city and state. Once you get a few years experience there are so many opportunities that will open up to you if you want to drive regional or local so that you are home way more often. Good luck to you Lowell and much success to you sir!!

Very cool, if you ever see may be sure to say hi. This definitely applies to any profession. We have allot of managers but not enough leaders in these massive companies. Much success to you David.

How did you feel about your previous trainer Chuck? Glad your son will be okay and I agree... Stop everything because family should always first.

Most of the people I went through PSD phase with that didn’t make it to upgrade to their own truck usually came down to their TNT experience. A lot of trainers at Prime and I’m sure a lot of other companies are aggressive, mean, and poor leaders. I got lucky with my trainer maybe but I told myself regardless I was going to push through because I don’t want to do any other career except this

Hello Chuck ... watched your trucking videos since day one ... found a lot of similarities with your back story and path to trucking vs my back story. Don't know if you still monitor this site, but hope your situation has turned for the better and look forward to an update on your trucking journey.

Going to prime in a couple months to start my journey and that is my #1 worry is getting a trainer that has patience and a teachers mentality hope everything goes well with your sons rehab..thanks and take care man
@TheTulsaTrucker5 жыл бұрын
Prime is a great company but the trainer situation is definitely something they need to work on. They are trying to weed out the bad ones. You just have to be sure to speak up if you get a bad one. Much success to you Shawn.

It doesn’t need a tune. Codes need to be rest. I never once had a code come on after my friend installed mine. Have them clear the codes see what happens if comes back on go to a different dealer.

I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos! I am currently a middle school teacher and I’m thinking about going into trucking.
@TheTulsaTrucker5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that sir! Trucking is definitely an experience. It’s much harder than most people think. Most of us drive everyday but driving a truck is magnified 10 fold. The daily goal is to drive and then try and find parking. There just are not enough places to park for the amount of trucks that are out on the road. It definitely takes a bit to get use to the lifestyle. It has its good points and some negatives as well. Definitely do allot of research. If you do not have a family is much easier but if there is a wife and kids you won’t realize how much they need you on a daily basis until you are not there. The road can be very therapeutic and at the same time very ruff on you as well.
@JeremyLorton5 жыл бұрын
The Tulsa Trucker I’ve been researching for a while and have gained a new insight into what truck driving is. It’s something I’ve thought about doing for some time and I am starting to get to the point where I think I might pull the trigger and just go for it.

You deal with family emergencies the same way we did in the Navy - the best you can. As a trucker, at least you are in the lower 48 and can get home. Can you imagine being in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and getting news like you did? This is why there are such things as Veteran's Day. Sacrifies are not always so apparent but are made nonetheless. You handled it with class and happy to hear that both Prime AND Enterprise worked with you. As this is a year later, I hope everything turned out well. I will find out in your next videos. (Binging watching in order)

Hey Chuck, very sorry to hear your son is having some problems. I will keep your family in my prayers. Your analysis on trainers is spot on. We deal with training concerns in my industry as well. Many of us take a course called, “Train the Trainer.” I highly recommend that anyone who wants to become a trainer take one of these courses. If they cannot treat their students with respect and concern for their education they should not be training anyone. You’re not training your competition, you’re training other drivers you will interact with on the road so make sure they are well trained!

I appreciate the 🙏🏻 Paul that means allot sir. You are spot on with your comment. The trainer has to be the soft spoken voice in the training process.

Great perspective you’re right to many trainers who don’t care sad. I’m looking to train my goal is to produce a driver who stays in the industry preferably with Prime because like you it’s the best company out there. I’ve been here a year have trained in other industries and know how to run a business. The opportunities here are truly endless the tools they give you to succeed I’ve never seen before ultimately I’d like to build a fleet here the tools are there . In the end it starts with the trainer they have to sell the job and the company they’re investing 30k into a student retention needs to a focus.
@TheTulsaTrucker4 жыл бұрын
There are allot of good people coming into the industry it’s just unfortunate many leave because of the training they receive. It’s a tuff adjustment from a lifestyle perspective but it’s only magnified when you have a so called trainer who has no business training anyone. They are only looking for someone to increase their revenue to the Truck. Good for you in wanting to invest back into someone who is looking to get their CDL and enter the world of Trucking. Prime needs about 800 more just like you!! Much success to you Robert!!

Are you going to go back? I was seriously thinking of going there. Now I’m scared to go. I have been watching a lot of UTUBE on trucking doesn’t seem to be much money in it for the sacrifice.
@TheTulsaTrucker5 жыл бұрын
I will be going back for the training and 12-18 months of experience and then I will drive regional or local. It is hard not going to sugarcoat it. You just have to go in with a mind set that you can do it no matter what.

Chuck, I’m glad to hear that your son will make a full recovery. There is nothing scarier as a parent than seeing a child suffering from an illness or injury. Your family is in my thoughts. I started following you on you Corvette channel last fall and have followed you over to your trucking channel. I enjoy all of your videos and know absolutely nothing about trucking. I look forward to your future videos when you get back to your training and when you get another Corvette.

Hey Chuck, I feel you. I think you should cut your experience NOW, with trucking. I know a little about you with all of the video's of your's I've seen....you are too family and home oriented to be away for soo long at a time. Don't be afraid to stop something, because you think it won't help you into your future, or because you think everyone will think you started something and didn't finish! You and your mind, knows what you can do BEST, only you. I am routing for you and - actually - I think I am routing for you to find another path to make your life happier! GOD BLESS YOU!
@frodrickfronkensteen92415 жыл бұрын
Or maybe pay the OTR bill (dues) for a year/two max, cut and run (with the experience) to a LTL. Get through the house 1-2 times a week. Or enjoy the expanding schedule variations companies are starting to employ to retain drivers (5/2, 4/4, 6/3, etc.). Stay with a company and gain seniority, and with that, ability to bid routes. It's not unheard of for experienced line haul drivers to go out and back every 1-3 days, a couple of times a week. I know what my wife would call that (looking over my shoulder to see if she's watching this)... a nice break each week :) Joking aside, our kids are grown, so I get that... it would be hard for parents with little ones at home. What appeals to me about trucking... variety, opportunity, job security and the ability to always make more by working harder. Cubicle/salaried positions (like mine...) I make what I make... doesn't mean d!ck if I work harder or longer. Maybe not at first, but eventually, trucking is what you make it. ... is what I think. ;)
