Studies have shown that even under the worst conditions, in a normally operating engine, essentially no filter will be anywhere near capacity at 5K, and the vast majority of filters can go multiple times more than 10K miles. The data, which was done by a major OEM, is online, although I would have to dig it up. Other than wanting to drain as much oil as possible during an oil change, there is absolutely no point in changing oil filters at 5K. The end cap is also not structural and only serves to help glue the filter media together. Toyota, for example, doesn't even use an end cap.

I stopped using Fram oil filters over 10 years ago. I replaced Fram with Wix, AC-Delco, Mobil 1 and sometimes Bosch. They’re(Fram)not the go to standard anymore, and haven’t been, for some time now.

I hope you know that AC Delco filters also use that style and so does Rolls-Royce and Honda. all it does is it seals in Media it doesn't reinforce anything that's what the center core is for. I wouldn't really use Bosch and m1 filters as they are actually known to be crappy and only filter to about 67% at 20 microns or 99% at 30 microns which is really pathetic because the cheapest Fram still does 95% at 20 microns and the silver and gold one do 99% at 20 microns. Your engine doesn't care what brand oil can is on it or what caps seal the media it cares about how clean the actual oil is when it gets pumped around into it. And no frams don't explode a failed oil pump pressure relief valve and hard use does. If I wanted to treat my engine well I would use an oil filter that gets 99% at 20 microns like the silver or gold fram. Why not get the ultra. Costs the same but is metal capped and has the best filtration out of all of them at 20 microns. Can't beat it. And they just released an updated version which is even better at the 5 and 10 micron efficiency so the new ones should be even better yet and they still weren't beat by the other off-the-shelf ones.

I have found that up to +- 3000 miles paper filters, just filter better than some synthetic media filters. Past 3000 miles I would use the more expensive ones. Several tests I saw showed that paper media is more effective in filtering debris as also better in flow rate than other media. But.....change them frequently.

Every oil filter has an efficiency vs micron particle size performance curve. The Fram efficiency rating is per ISO 4548-12, which has been a world wide industry standard to measure filter efficiency for the last 22 years. If an oil filter is rated at 99% @ 20 microns, it will still remove particles smaller than 20 microns, but at a lower efficiency, like for example 70% @ 15 microns, and 50% @ 10 microns.

People that have had failures on the orange cans is because they run em longer than they’re designed to run. I ran the orange can for years in 3k intervals and when I realize that oils were improved and we can run longer intervals, I went up to the longer interval can and I do 5-7 k on the synthetic fram.

@firstlast--- 3 жыл бұрын
@@thebaron8783 5w-30 is the ideal viscosity for most water cooled engines. By putting in oil so extremely thick you are putting a ton of strain on the oil pump. I would recommend going back to a quality 5w-30, synthetic is preferred but if you're worried about creating an oil leak a conventional oil will be ok depending on the brand. Replace the pcv valve if equipped as a sticking valve will allow too much oil back through the intake. Buy a bg epr kit online and give that a go. You pour in the epr, idle the engine at about 1300-1500 rpms or so for about 30 minutes and that will get the engine nice and hot. Immediately drain the oil and fill with new, and then pour in the moa additive that comes with the epr. The epr kit won't remove sludge but it will do a good job of removing varnish and unsticking piston rings. If that doesn't work take out the spark plugs and soak the cylinders with marvel mystery oil for about 24 hours, with the spark plugs removed crank the engine over to get rid of the excess oil and then reinstall the plugs. You might have to do the marvel mystery oil treatment several times before the piston rings un stick. If you need help you can go online and search something to the effect of "marvel mystery oil piston ring" and you'll see many forum posts of people doing what I mentioned and successfully stopping oil consumption. If you have tried all of the above and you are still facing excessive consumption it's time for a rebuild. Unless your engine is in really bad shape one of those tricks should work, at the very least it should reduce oil consumption to a reasonable level

Re: micron levels....Filter media testing talks about efficiencies at various micron levels, i.e. for material of a certain size (micron), what percentage of that material will get trapped vs not. So, when they claim to be good to a certain micron level, if they don't tell you what efficiency percentage (100% means it catches all at that size), it's kinda bunk. To put it another way, a screen door is a "20 micron" filter; it's just not efficient at it. Also, if the two figures aren't derived using the same testing methods (SAE has a few industry standard tests that are most common), you can't really compare figures.

So anywhere in either of those filters did you see any surface rust? There have been reports of brand new Fram filters straight off the shelf having surface rust inside. Sometimes you can see it on the bypass valve or on the top of the filter plate. Fram has been considered garbage for a long time after we figured out they use cardboard for end plates. If you take apart a used Fram filter you'll see that sometimes that adhesive has failed and the endplate isn't attached anymore leaking unfiltered oil through into the clean side of the filter. They've known about it for a long time but don't want to change the design. Wix/Napa is now the go to with 21-23 micron at 99% efficiency rating for 32 grams of dirt. Their XP version is only 32-35 micron at 99% due to using synthetic media that will allow a longer oil change interval (you sacrifice some efficiency for a longer oci). A lot of channels have oil filter reviews, we've seen the Wix being better quality over all. I'd like to see you do a side by side review/comparison next to the filters you just cut open.

The Internet makes them look so bad but they are perfectly fine. I must point out that those end caps are not cardboard. The end cap material is similar to the actual filter media. Some OEM Honda and Nissan filters are constructed the same way. As far as the micron rating, both filters are rated at 20 microns but the cheaper one is rated at 95.7% efficiency @ 20 microns. The Ultra is 99% @ 20 microns.

I used the cheap Fram for years back in the day when i usta change oil and filter every 3000 they worked fine. I wouldn't want to use them any longer than that. I now go 5000 miles between oil changes and use the ultra synthetic as engines burn cleaner now with fuel injection vs carbs. A few more dollars for the best is a drop in the bucket when you are talking about auto expense ; )

Good video and great chemistry. I have always read that women are the ones who drive car purchases. A monthly segment on car reviews mighty be a good idea. This could highlight what you both find good, or not so good, about the same car, and what you all might find that is not needed and/or a concern for the average family that may be considering purchasing their “second most expensive” purchase. Example of the new Hyundai “pickup” that is supposed to be coming to showrooms soon. And I hope that you both have found Tennessee to be a welcoming place, and people!

Hi Jimmy, I think "Amsoil" oil filters, filter down to five microns. If you want cleaner oil. Also If you want super clean oil Amsoil also sells sub micron bypass add on filters, those filter down to like 1/2 micron. There are people that just change the filter and the bypass filter and send a tiny sample of their oil out to a lab for Chemical Spectrographic oil analysis. I Know of people that have gone 100,000 miles + with Amsoil Oil doing this with constant positive analysis results

Folks always pick on Fram. The thing is, if you change your oil when you're supposed to, the brand of filter becomes less of an issue. Most folks do not change the oil when they're supposed to. Some never change it, and then they have no idea why they experience issues at 50,000 miles. And some use low quality oil. Yes, the brand of oil makes a difference too! Ever take apart an engine, or remove valve covers and it looks like a cross between Jello and roofing tar in there... it's not supposed to. It has everything to do with oil change intervals. I've used the cheap, orange Fram filters for more than 30 years. I've used other brands as well. And in 30 years, I've never had an engine fail because of oil issues.

I used both and I never had a problem. I now used the ultra synthetic for extra protection since I changed my oil every 10,000 mi or a year.. I would use the orange filter if I change my oil every 7,000 miles but that's how far I'll go with the orange filter the gold filter I'll go up to 10,000 Miles

I used Fram for years without any problems. But, always used with conventional oil and maximum would run for 1 year or 5k. My current toyota calls for change intervals of 10K. Personally I would not run the Fram EG beyond 5K, at somepoint that cardboard will no longer support the filter media and it will collapse. For the longer change intervals I've switched to Baldwin, Wix, and Fram ultra synthetic along with synthetic oil.

On the flip side, Fram EG has lesser resistance to oil flow in colder temperatures compared to Fram Ultra.

Fram filters tend to cause a 5-psi drop in pressure versus others, which is why I trust Wix... or their Car Quest equivalent.

Thanks for the oil filter opening video. It proved that Fram makes many different filters. I personally don't like that brand as like you said in the video they break down at about 2,800 miles. I prefer Mobil oil filters or Wix for dependability. Yes keep your wife in the videos until she starts growing a shabby beard like yours. Great videos..keep'um coming. 👍
