Yeah for sure, especially if you’re under the age of 21. If you’re in high school and wanna jump straight into law enforcement, military has law enforcement and you can join at 17(with parental signature). 4 years later, you’re out of the military with full benefits. I noticed some departments will let you apply for positions at 20.5 years old, so basically while you’re getting out of the military you can apply for a department and be ready to rock 👊🏽

Go military first. You can get your youthful stupidity out of the way, get some good discipline, stack up some money and experience, and you’re more likely to adapt to the environment better as a younger person. Beyond that, a disqualification from military service is coming down the pipe as you age anyway. I was 24 when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Put an end to my military career real quick. Then I went into policing. I don’t think I would have been able to handle policing as a 21 y/o to be honest. I was way too immature and concerned with partying and chasing girls than anything else. The military expects its personnel to behave like that to some extent, so there’s some wiggle room for you. Police agencies don’t mess around. Show up to work with liquor on your breath, get mad at a civilian and say something regrettable, or even just not study enough in academy and you’re out. Military is better for a younger man. Police is better for a mature man.

Your video was absolutely exactly what I needed to hear. I had a feeling to do military first after re thinking when to do POST. The first day of POST orientation I went to a few weeks ago I was like “Wow this is very much military-style” in terms of structure and discipline and that made me question whether to do military first as I’ve always had a want to at some point in my life anyway. So now since I have my bachelor’s degree, I’ve contacted several recruiters and am going to try to pursue an officer route in the Army National Guard most likely (I say most likely as it is Christmas right now and will be chatting with the recruiter after the holidays are over about officer route specifically) and in case that doesn’t work I have an enlisted Reserves plan to pursue in the Army. Your video helped me feel better about that decision as both are similar in structure and even work wise as I’m trying to pursue 31B/31A depending on the officer stuff I mentioned, but the military is better to knock out now since I’m only 22. I plan to use the military experience to apply with CHP instead anyway as they have Veteran’s preferences plus their academy allows me to apply almost anywhere on CA and possibly out of state as well since I do have plans to leave here. But thank you for your video is the main thing it helps me feel better about my decision.

It’s simple….military is more of a ‘young-mans’ game insofar as initial entry (typically around 18-35) when I went thru BCT I was 22 most guys and gals were 18-24. There were several guys in my platoon that were late 20s and early 30s. Cutoff age for Army is 35 and 36 with a waiver. For law enforcement the average age of trainees in an academy is 25-40. There is definitely a high per capita of more matured and older people in LE than military. Join the military first for the most minimum contract possible (2-3) years. Once you join law enforcement …realistically…you aren’t going to join the military because a police agency isn’t going to like spending the $60,000 or so it takes to train you and swear you in and then your subsequent decision is to leave for military service. It is just not realistic

Can I ask what exactly do you do in the military? Currently in this position, but now in the process of enlisting in the Air National Guard & the reason for choosing the reserve aspect is to also apply and establish a full time career in LEO as a sheriff / officer at the same time. I hope going through academy while starting out in mil is doable!

WHAT HAPPENED? I am doing the same. In process for the Police Recruit Selection now and then Academy would be in 3 months from now. If selected I would also be sponsored. If I don't get selected I would just go Active Duty, however, if selected then I am joining the Air Force Reserve or Army National Guard for Pararescue or Special Forces respectively. Special Operattions is my dream but so Is being a first responder and this department works well with military and is one of the best paid in the state with good benefits. It'd be stupid to pass it up especially when it's something of interest. My Police Recruiter said get selected, pass Academy, and complete the Field Officer Training Program then enlist into Guard/Reserve. That way you secured the job and do not need to retrain upon returning from Air Force Tech School or Army AIT or rather their 2 year pipeline which the department said they would be okay with me leaving to train as long as I put in some return before I go. What happened with you?????

Also the cultural differences between the police and military is very different. Military you put your life on the line for citizens and government officials, police you put the police department over everything else, your basically a hired gun for a few than for all as a police officer. But there are some really good police departments who actually serve their citizens depending on the state. Like texas is a good place to be police or sheriff . LA and newyork are terrible places to be a police officer.
