Did you really say Bad Company and "lack of experience?" This band was considered one of the first "supergroups" with each of the guys coming from other very successful bands. Paul Rodgers from Free, Boz Burrell from King Crimson, Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople and Simon Kirke also from Free. Their debut record was also my first ever cassette tape purchase in 1974. Sometimes, a song is just a song; music, one you can sing along to, that is fun and doesn't need to be some technical masterpiece to be enjoyed as a part of one's generation...that 'rotation' that just plays in the background of life and perks up when each of us finds that song that gets them going. Lack of experience? They were all established already. Rodgers and Kirke were from Free, Burrell was in King Crimson and Ralphs was in Mott the Hoople. I have to totally disagree with you on this song. Personally, I thought you'd not like the second half since it was mostly jam and kind of improvised lyrics (nothing wrong with that). I would take this over Feel Like Making Love any day which was a step for them starting to go commercial IMO. I was a fan from day one, and IMO then and to this day is that each album was not good as the previous. I know a lot of people LOVE Straight Shooter but if I never hear Shooting Star again, I won't be sad, it's a great song but overplayed. On the other hand I could listen to Can't Get Enough, Bad Company, Rock Steady and Ready for Love an infinite number of times. The debut still had the bluesy swagger they had in Free but then started to lose that with each subsequent album. I know a lot of people will hate me for this, but I am a lifelong Bad Company and Paul Rodgers fan it's how I feel. I feel that Can't Get Enough has that macho swagger and is like a sequel to Free's All Right Now.

I can see how generational attention span is a major issue with classic rock. We were willing to let songs develop - in fact sometimes really we loved it. I mean Echos is my favorite Floyd tune and that’s like a 23 minute song that develops beautifully and has no spots where I lose interest, this song “changed gears” more than it “built”. Doing the same thing for 2 minutes isn’t necessarily building, Freebird is a good example of a song that builds where the intensity goes up every time we pass a verse through. I get what you mean and for a lot of younger people sure but here with this song it’s not really a matter of attention span.

I've got to agree with a lot of other people, the first part of the song was essential for it to develop and climax. I grew up listening to Free on the radio and then when they split to Bad Company. Overall I would have to say that I preferred Free but Paul Rodgers voice was a constant between both bands. And it really is a great voice. When he toured with the remnants of Queen my reaction was that they'd probably be blown off the stage by him. One of my wife's claims to fame is that she went to a Convent School with his sister. I don't know if you believe in coincidence but hard rock? Girls School? Someone is definitely telling us something. And when you take into account the fact that Girlschool's "C'mon, Let's Go" does not build at all, it's a 24 carat banger all the way through it seems like a crime that you haven't played it yet, all three minutes thirty four seconds of it. On the other hand, Fanny's "Ain't That Peculiar" does build throughout and that song is all the better for it. Chicago were great friends of the band as were many others. With the movie "Fanny: The Right to Rock" just being released you'll want to play them before the bandwagon starts to move.

Am not sure this is a claim to fame…but Paul Rodgers lives just down the road from us here in British Columbia after marrying a local girl years ago. He has a great place on Lake Okanagan..(the lake that has had weird sightings of a creature called Ogopogo…with stories going back to local native bands.). He has had Robert Plant up there and there are regular sightings of him at a few karaoke bars in the area. My understanding is unfortunately…that Paul has had some fairly serious health issues within the last couple of years.

He's been one of my biggest influences as a vocalist. This song and Rock Steady were two of my audition songs for the first rock band I joined.

We get it. Stop picking apart every detail of every song to show how musically adept you are. The whole time during the song your heads were bopping up and down with goofy faces. Who the fuck cares how love was used three different ways in the second verse. The drums were great the guitars were great the bass line was great and the vocals were fucking great. The song is great!

Last time I complained about their criticism, especially at Andy, I almost unsubscribed after Alex replied to my comment defending Andy! They’re getting too arrogant and don’t have any idea that this was our era, not theirs! Besides, I wonder if they will ever have one of their own songs played on the radio?
@rsw12273 жыл бұрын
I understand music is subjective and it's THEIR reaction channel but... Who are they to sh!t on and question the lyrics or the songs pace or structure? It just comes off snarky and pretentious. Being 52, and growing up on this music, I just have a respect for the artists. Even when I hear a "below average" bar band, I still have respect for them for getting on stage and trying. It's something I can't do.
@andyandalex3 жыл бұрын
The point of the channel is to explore music from the past and give you an honest take on how guys our age feel about it, not jerk off everything we hear, we get there’s a lot of nostalgia involved and it can come off rude giving out opinions but what’s the alternative? Only saying the positives and leaving out any points of disinterest? Seems not genuine and loads of other channels are already doing that.
@meadish3 жыл бұрын
@@andyandalex Everyone gets a bit p-d off when you don't like one of their faves, it's natural. I thought you dropped the ball on She Sells Sanctuary - at the same I see why you thought what you thought, and I'm cool with it. In the end you're right - you have to be honest, and the rest of us simply have to learn to agree to disagree when that happens.

@Mea Dish Yeah and it’s definitely more fun when “the stars align” and we just totally gush over a song and really have that classic moment but being straight up and honest is the only for those moments to be REAL when they do happen, appreciate your response

You guys should listen to The Tragically Hip, a Canadian band that occupies a very special place of honour in our country. Seriously, they are members of The Order of Canada, which is (essentially) the highest civilian honour Canada can give. Gord Downie (the lead singer) was something inexplicably special. When Gord was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, the band embarked on a final tour across Canada. The last concert of that tour was broadcast live, for free, all across Canada. Over 1/3rd of our entire population was watching it, they interrupted the Rio Olympics in primetime to air a concert.

Maybe radio play, but this song isn't anywhere near their best. It's not even the best 4-5 on their first LP.
@gw29553 жыл бұрын
@@donnievick3076 well like I said, top 5 or 6. I can name the 4 songs that are definitely ahead of this one. Bad Company Shooting Star Feel Like Makin' Love Rock n Roll Fantasy Then there's a tier of songs that fit into that 5 and 6 slot, including this song: Can't Get Enough Ready for Love Good Loving Gone Bad You can dice 'em up any way you like, but Can't Get Enough is definitely in the conversation for top 6. As far as it being an A, that just speaks to how good Bad Company was. They made a lot of A grade songs. No apologies there.

@@gw2955 I think R&R Fantasy is the worst song on Desolation Angels. As for Can't Get Enough, solid song, but I like every song on their first LP better than that one too. And I haven't even begun to get into Run With The Pack, Burning Sky, and Desolation Angels. There are two you mentioned that really hold up for me, Bad Co, and Good Lovin' Gone Bad. The rest of those songs, I've heard so many times from FM radio back in the day, that I don't really care to hear them. Every few years is enough. My two cents
@gw29553 жыл бұрын
@@donnievick3076 I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. I don't think we can use a standard of how a song held up over nearly 50 years. I think about how I felt about the song when I first heard it and in those ensuing years. For example, Rock N Roll Fantasy had a cool vibe in the 70's. Maybe it sounds aged in 2021, but I can't discredit it now for that. If I did that, there are a million songs I would have to write off. Hell, I get tired listening to classic rock stations all the time. Even my favorite bands can get tiresome. That doesn't mean they weren't great back in the day. It just means I've heard it a million times and I need something new for my ears.
@donnievick30763 жыл бұрын
@@gw2955 I hear ya, that's why I said my two cents. I haven't been able to listen to the radio for decades for the exact reason you stated. As for R&R Fantasy, I never cared for it that much, but the deeper cuts on their LP's that never got played on the radio still sound great to this day to me. On a side note, the first time I heard Can't Get Enough was when I was 11. I was helping my parents at a gas station that my uncle owned while he was on vacation. A cool looking van with some abstract painting on the side pulled in. A long haired dude got out and left his door open and CGE was blasting out of the van. I was already listening to R&R by then, but asked him who it was. He told me, and I bought the LP the next week with allowance money. Thought that dude was cool as all get out. After I bought the LP, I knew he was. Damn, those days were fun! Peace!

I love this song. I love how it builds and doesn't start at a ten and go to...ten. But I gotta tell ya boys, I saw Queen & Paul Rogers live and they did this song... Roger Taylor, Brian May & Paul Rogers. Took a very good song and made it an absolute showstopper. I love B.C. but the power of that drummer & frickin' Brian May made it outstanding. Rogers had a great chemistry with Queen as well. He was definitely not just sitting in for Freddie. What a voice! Like Ian Gillan, Paul Rogers has a rare quality to his voice that makes even the very highest notes still sound very masculine.

So, that's 2 in a row where I couldn't disagree with you more, but I can sort of see why. The Smiths, you need to get into the rest of their stuff for How Soon Is Now to stand out as the outlier. Context is everything. This one, the second half stands out more because the first half is relatively restrained and straightforward. If you start like a hurricane, it's tricky to build from there.

Never cared for this song much, for all the reasons you stated. I always thought of it as "Generic Rock Song" - the song that could be playing in the background in a movie when someone walks into a bar and orders a beer (no specific brand), then later gives his phone number (with a 555 prefix) to a hottie.
