I wouldn’t have thought so the first 10x or so I listened to it. But then it started to grow on me and i really listened to the lyrics, melody, harmony…and it all just works so perfectly, and the lyrics have depth. It’s beautiful. I like the younger studio recording version better though - you can see the twinkle in his eye, before he started wearing sunglasses all the time. He has such life in his eyes.

I just saw them in Toronto July 18 2019 ( Best Concert of my life) All the reviews agree they are the best live act in the world and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius. They are in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Song Writer award ( ASCAP ) 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Full disclosure: I was never all that big of an ELO fan, although it was obvious even to me that Jeff Lynne has a ton of musical talent. Recently I have felt compelled to delve into his music on a much more sincere and concentrated level. This song is so beautiful I almost started crying. For some reason I keep getting the idea that his voice would have blended perfectly with the Beatles, or that it is every bit as good as Paul's was. I feel the same about his songwriting ability. At any rate, at the ripe old age of 62 I am finally appreciating this man's singing and songwriting genius, he is a great musician indeed.
@bradcrawford1998 Жыл бұрын
John, you're message here is so beautifully written and I agree with you 110%. I loved ELO growing up in the 70's, had they're albums. BUT I NEVER saw them in concert, mainly cause they didn't tour a lot in the US. I was recently rejuvenated with they're music as we have a local tribute band in St. Louis, Mo called Mr Blue Sky. They're are AMAZING, I saw them live recently. I honestly thought it was the real ELO. Play 4-5 time's a year and crowds are getting bigger. 3,000 people last show at $20 a ticket and will probably go up with they're exposure, and demand. Performing outside STL now to, they're that good. So glad I found them and enjoying ELO again. I read where Jeff Lynne was actually personal friends with the Beatles in the 70's and 80's, and probably still are, he wrote music with them, except John Lennon. That says it all. When you got the Beatles respecting you're music, ENOUGH said. Has to be one of the biggest compliments you can ever achieve. Good luck and thanks for posting.

ELO were the Beatles of the Seventies. No wonder that George joined him with the Traveling Wilburys.
@bradcrawford1998 Жыл бұрын
John, ELO was so big back in the 70's and 80's and Jeff Lynne was a magician. I was not a huge emotionally attached fan of ELO like I was Journey, Styx, Chicago and REO as my music interest peaked from 1976 - late 80's when all the bands were hot and I used to love all of they're live shows. BUT ELO. music was always out there on the radio but they weren't a big touring band in the states being from Europe like they were. They're music was so engaging and I loved it especially this tune, Telephone Line, Do ya, Evil Woman and the list goes on and on. I have personally been reunited with they're music from a local St. Louis ELO tribute band that is INCREDIBLE and entertaining. Full, same amount of band members, 2 violinists and a cello player, 2 keyboardist, lead singer who sound so much like Jeff Lynne. I have seen this band perform twice and they have built themselves a nice following. One show was an outdoor venue 3,000 people and they're most recent indoor show of a 1,000 people energetic fans. I have come out of both shows FIRED up and loving ELO again like I did 40 years ago. They're music is back in my life with positive vibes. I would love to see the real band live but STL has not been a city they have performed live in 40+ years 😢 At least I get to see the tribute band perform which has been amazing. You're love for they're music is great to see. For the Beatles to take a liking to ELO back in the 70's says it all 😊

Can a song be any more perfect than this?
@denisej48138 жыл бұрын
In my humble opinion, it is one of the greatest pop songs ever written. It has a beautiful vocal line which floats above a gorgeous melody, and a storyline told in a very economical and clever way - the time and place are quickly established in each verse and it is then left to the listener to fill in the gaps of the narrator's life story according to their own interpretation. This version shows off the song in all its raw, stripped-back beauty, but another strength of the song is that is also sounds wonderful when given the full orchestral treatnent, as in the live version perfomed by Jeff Lynne's ELO and the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Hyde Park concert in 2014. The song is also very cleverly and aptly titled, as its melody is very hummable as well as being memorable. Songs are all too often described as classics, but this one is a true classic, fully deserving of the description. I count myself truly privileged to have heard Jeff and his wonderful band perform it live in Birmingham a few weeks ago.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".

I was twelve in '74, just crossing over from AM pop to start listening to my older brother's LPs. Music to navigate life by. My thanks to these artists.

I love this version. There's a whole series of these songs done the same way -- just piano, guitar, and voice. Hearing the beauty in these songs done so simply, I actually now believe the old ELO albums were over-produced. The songs speak for themselves, but I suppose that's the way records were made in the 1970s.

Actually just piano and voice but still great.

@@MaurysMusic Jeff is strumming a guitar... though I agree that we mostly hear voice and piano. Around 2:37 is a moment when all you can hear is Jeff's guitar

Yep, you had to compete with Phil Spector's "wall of sound".

Your opinion is valid thats what made MTV's Unplugged such a great show and why so many bands had career defining performances on it because the songs were stripped down to basic elements and it's those that underlie all great music. Some really great albums suffer in the long run simply by the time period they were recording and what "everybody is doing" then. The funk of the 70's will always sound great but a lot of the synth cheese of the 80's makes a lot of great music hard to revisit. ELO was WAY too overproduced in my opinion as well but you do what you are at the time.

This guy is simply amazing. ELO is just the beginning of his legend and legacy. Including his work with ELO, Jeff's hit-making ability as a producer is sensational. Hits by Petty, Harrison, Orbison, Wilburys, and I'm sure I'm missing many others... no one arranges a song like Jeff.

Unspeakable appreciation to Jeff Glen and the ELO. Their musical helped me through Marine Corps Combat Training on Camp Pendleton prior to the first Gulf War, and during the first Gulf War combat operations. Such a golden orientation and presentation to real music it soothes the soul. Thank you!!!!!!
