I told my kids, if the teacher says no and it's truly an emergency, don't argue, don't beg, don't say anything else at all, just silently leave the room and go take care of your business, and dealing with the teacher afterwards will be MY problem. We live in a school district where most of the teachers have a brain - key word most - so never had an issue with this.

There was a teacher in my primary school approx 20-25 years ago who traumatised a lot of pupils. When I say traumatised, I truly mean it. One boy lost his parents in a house fire and ended up living with their aunt. This boy asked to go to the toilet and the teacher went on to berate him. I’ll never forget the words “the only reason you’ll be leaving this class is if there is a fire and that’s if you’re quick enough, unlike your parents. Toilet breaks are to be taken at break and lunch time only.” Those were the teachers words to that boy. Another friend who was recovering from brain tumour surgery was berated by the same teacher in a massively inappropriate manner as well as multiple other pupils, myself included. Mrs Campbell, your name will never be forgotten, your actions and words will never be forgotten and it’s for all the wrong reasons. She was the most evil, vindictive teacher I have ever known. Did I say that we were 8-9 years old at this point? Your words still ring loud. Witch!

My teachers would do this too. We had maybe 4 bathrooms for each gender, but only 2 were ever open. Even then, it was only 1 open 90% of the time because too many people would smoke in their. Even if your class and restroom were close, your locker had a good chance of not being close either. Lots of our teachers would deduct points for not bringing our text books to class but like hell we would drag it with us whole. So trip to our locker was always needed.

I remember in first grade we had a notoriously mean teacher that would flip desks over dumping the contents and generally just being mean hearted. She made me stay after school one day and then just left me there and it wasnt until one of the other teachers saw me crying that i was able to be released. My family was already on their way because i had missed the bus. Probably didn’t go anywhere if teacher was their long enough. Had teachers who didn’t teach and admin could tell which one based off subject alone. Had other teachers loss their temper daily with the students for small matters like a student quietly doing their work but being “disruptive” because they forgot their book and are sharing books with kid next to them. Nothing ever happened. However, when we did get amazing teachers who were nice and good at teaching, they would be first to be laid of a month into teaching.

If you need to go to the bathroom fill out an online bathroom pass, which is a waste of time. Some classmates aren't allowed at times since they interupt class and they sometimes justblie and go meet up with friends or something. It's quite obvious which ones does that. Because of a few students that have violated the privilege of using the bathroom, other students have had to suffer. Schools only give students enough time between classes to walk from one class to the other. Holding it in for too long causes problems later in life. There are two ways to solve this issue: 1. Allow more time between classes, so that students can take restroom breaks. 2. Keep a bathroom hall pass by the door. This way students can quietly get out of their seat, pick up the hall pass, go to the bathroom, then quietly go back to class without disturbing other students. I also want to add that it’s not easy getting a doctor to write a note.

He then told me I should've went on my way back from the nurses office. I then walked out and went to the bathroom. He sent me to the counselors office Lol go ahead, call my mom who is a nurse that works 12hr minimum shifts. I used to teach as a part of an afterschool program. We were not allowed to let kids go to the bathroom without an adult, but it was also one teacher per room. This meant if a kid had to go, the whole class had to go. A typical class was around 30-35 kids. Very often a kid would tell me they needed to go after we had just gotten back from the bathroom, so the entire class period would be spent just going to the bathroom and back. I have this super vivid memory of this very shy girl telling me she needed to go to the bathroom. I told her ok, she needed to hold it while I got the whole class in line. This class was super chaotic, not very familiar with me yet, so it wasn’t an easy task. It was less than two minutes before I heard her say something like “oh no”, and she peed her pants right there. I felt soooooooooo bad. It was a moment I truly learned any statement of “I need to go” could be a dire emergency for elementary kids. I have zero recollection of how I handled it after. Those classes were 1 day a week with each group for six weeks so basically designed to feel like you’re in the first month of school with new kids all year. I hope I was able to help, but I remember our room felt like it was ages away from the bathroom. That moment of her peeing, and my failure to help her pops up in my mind everyone once in a while. I really hope she was young enough that it didn’t form a trauma memory. 😔
