I think the prospective from standing in the bed of the pickup, filming the bus run up the hill is the best that I've seen on this channel. Just seems to capture the event (running up the hill-post rebuild) very well. Oz had a BIG SMILE, that's what Bus Grease Monkey is all about. Great work Scott, and to team member's. Thanks for sharing.

Scott, congrats to another successful repair, I am not a diesel mech of any kind, always was a industrial mechanic and did find all kinds of jury rigging by owners and such. Glad that there are fokes like you who have the knowledge and skills to keep these old girls running down the road. Oz definitely showed how happy he was with your skills and abilities.

Detroit 2 stroke's are amazing . old school , i still work on a few . a lot of people don't get fuel restrictor return fittings and change them to a non ported fitting . i don't know if they ever quit. just usually have an issue . you can pull bird cage covers and look for scored pistons . bus access looks limited. Thanks good vid

Scott, what’s your final assessment as to what the problem fix was that made the big power change? Was it the mesh filters in each of the injectors, or something else?
@BusGreaseMonkey7 ай бұрын
Replacing the injectors was the fuel and power issue. Both clogged filters and injector nozzles i suspect

We see performance problems like that on high mileage Toyotas. 300k and they start loosing a bit of power and set lean codes. We get them after every other part is replaced; Mac, fuel pump, temp sensors, cats and even timing chains! Flow test injectors a they are below 50%. Hard to diagnose if you don’t know your way around. Great job on that engine and Lennies makeover.

@bowslap7 ай бұрын
That engine was a hot mess all around, with the excessive wear and what turned out to be bacterial growth/algae clear up into the injectors, no small wonder that it had no power! Paired with a lack of return-side restriction….equivalent to attempting to breathe through a straw while running a marathon. Good job on diagnosing the issue and getting it sorted….

Hey Scott, if you ever make it to southern Vancouver Island(Sooke on the southern tip), I've got a place on the water for you to park your bus, a 40 ft fishing boat with a 6V53 to take you salmon fishing, and two buses one with a 6V71 and another with 8V71 that are still runners that could use some TLC. Keep that in mind, the pleasure would be all mine. As an aside, if you went to go uphill from a standstill and you had no power and insane black smoke where would you look first. :)
@BusGreaseMonkey6 ай бұрын
Start looking at the air filter. Exhaust leaks if it’s a turbo. Black smoke is fuel and means it’s not getting enough air
@allancrow1346 ай бұрын
No turbo, I was going to disconnect the filter and give it some direct air, no dust around here. I'll try that first. Just found your channel, love it. The towel story was priceless. Thanks eh! @@BusGreaseMonkey

Wonder if they have the apparatus to "polish" fuel? I know that's kind of a boat thing, but might help here. While they are waiting to get new parts, see how much crud they could filter / capture out of that tank. Or my solution, pump off most of the good stuff and throw it in the caboose stove fuel tank and junk the rest.
