Considering how much heavier the ChampCar is, the steel brakes and lesser aero, the engine was definitely the difference maker. CART engines just don't get enough credit for how much power and torque they put out of 2.65 liters.

One of the reasons being the methanol fuel which has better knock resistance and a higher conversion efficiency than gasoline which results in an engine optimised to run out it having higher output than a gasoline equivalent.

its because of the slick tyres. If the f1 Car would have the slicks it'll be about 3 seconds faster at Spa.

Consdering the CART had the far superior engine, it just shows how much better F1 aero development was, even among backmarkers, compared to the CARTs. The Arrow's engine alone stood no chance to be honest. It was acceleration and low to mid-speed corners which saved the F1 from falling even further behind.

Don't forget the Reynard was much heavier and had steel brake discs, unlike the carbon discs used in F1.

The "backmarker" is an RSS 2000 V10 that is supposed to replicate the 2000 championship winning Ferrari, not a "backmarker"

With an open track, the F1 would have been a few seconds faster. It was being slowed down by the Indy car in the corners.

No effing way. Just look at the lap times of F1 vs Champ Car at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the 2000s to see the real difference. F1 was faster by 5 to 7 seconds per lap.

I reckon any other track and F1 wins, but Spa has huge straights which heavily suited the CART. Put them on the barcelona GP circuit and f1 would probably win.

If they were in a qual format, the F1 would have a considerably faster line. The Indy car was slowing it down significantly in the corners.

@@jonniesold Hockenheim maybe Canada no we have lap times from when they went Canada Edit - but I think people underestimate how much time a F1 car makes up from braking and cornering compared to every other series in the world

The 2000 Arrows (if only it were more reliable) was actually one of the fastest cars on the high speed circuits. It was known for having very low-drag aero so could hold its own for top speed. It was a visually gorgeous design also.

@@jonnies And i would add the A21 was not a backmarker but a solid midfield team. Actually, not a lof of people know that but Verstappen had the quickest speed ever at Hockenheim (without a slipstream) at 356.5 kph...

Jos Verstappen qualified with a time of 1:53.912 for the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix, a full 6 seconds faster than the theoretical qualifying time from this simulation. His team mate was even faster with a 1:53.237, 2.6 seconds behind the pole position.

One could say that the 2007 cars were quicker than the 2002 cars, so let’s compare fair times from 2002 to 2007 on a track that didn’t change, Albert Park. The 2002 Australian Grand Prix pole time was a 1:25.843, while the 2007 race there had a pole time of 1:26.072. This all means that the new Spa layout isn’t much slower at all compared to the old one last used in 2002. The real reason for perhaps 90% of the different between this lap and the one the two drivers did in qualifying for the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix is the lap in this video began with a standing start. That already adds several seconds to the lap compared to a flying lap, probably around 5 seconds here.

You don’t need a sim to tell you this. F1 and CART ran at in Montreal. Pole in CART was 1:18.959 vs F1 1:12.836. Race race was 1:15.960 F1 vs 1:20.238 CART Those cars were absolute beasts in both series. Champcar racing in the mid 90s was an F1 rival

I don't think it's quite a backmarker, since RSS based this car off the 2000 Ferrari F1-2000, which was the tied for the best car with the 2000 McLaren MP4-15. If the hp, torque and aero data is not changed, it's the best car of the year 2000, the Ferrari F1-2000.

Miss CART, was amazing. Especially when they ran the race in my hometown for many years. My only gripe with this test is the champ car got the benefit of two slipstreams to keep pace and pass. I think a quali hot lap from both would see a different outcome.

@@simplygregsterev Totally agree. Started going to Molson Indy in Vancouver in 1995 when Jacques Villeneuve was there and was there at least one of the days every year till its demise. When Jacques got his jump to F1, I started the 5am wake ups on Sundays to watch the races.

I think that on a clear track in isolation the F1 car would lap faster though, it was being held up in the corners a fair bit by the Indycar.

okay - how about put the honda engine of the 1988 mclaren in the 1988 March/Leyton house car? And see which car wins! Also, put the lamborgini engine that Ayrton Senna wanted Mclaren to put in the 1993 Mclaren McLaren MP4/8 and see if it can beat the Williams FW15C car of the same year

Won the race but it's not faster. It held the F1 car up for almost the entire second sector where the F1 would pull a big enough gap to not get passed on the back straight. Spa is a good track for comparison

The x1 can lap nordschleife in +3 minutes in assetto (mod) or gt, there is no F1 no matter the power and tires that can compare to that...

This should be fastest lap Vs fastest lap to be truly representative. As is often the case the power car gets ahead and the game AI is unable to overtake. Clearly the F1 car would've been faster over the lap with it's superior handling but I guess that doesn't garner clicks and views.

I guess the 2027 Indycar will be very close of a 2027 F1. Indycars are trying to be faster while F1 must be slower. But F1 can improve faster.

Y si lo ponen en un avalo el F1 con poca carga aerodinámica gana igualmente o se les olvida que los F1 o los que los construyen son los dueño de la ingeniería automotriz en una pista por vuelta le podria sacar un F1 a un cart de 10 a 15 segundo mejor lea y vea para que aprenda

Hardly accurate, the champ cart would have been a second slower through Eau Rouge alone, attempting it at that speed and it would be in the gravel, in bits. Arrows should be 5/6 seconds a lap quicker

Hard to believe. The steel brakes vs F1 carbon brakes plus F1 cornering....I don't buy it. That said Indycar could try and make it a real world series by visiting Spa and actually proving how good the Indycar could be around that legendary circuit.
