Indian Motorcycles released the 2023 Sport Chief and I wanted to know if it could compete with the Harley-Davidson Low Rider S. We'll find out in the head to head comparison of these two motorcycles. Harley Low Rider S vs. Indian Chief Sport comparison. I wanted to test ride and review this bike.

For some people the whole point of riding is to be away from all that electronic stuff. I’ll just throw my phone on my handlebars if I need navigation. I do think Harley should make a nice digital gauge for the big bikes and make it an option. Harley is behind on some things that it is really time for them to catch up on, and the new sportster are a good start. That RevMax can compete with or beat anything that’s out there in that class of bikes. So HD can for sure do it if they want!

The SC may get a slight edge on suspension with that Fox setup, but the mono shock on the 18-up Softail is really good. One of the best frames HD has ever put out. The screen is cool and I wish HD would at least make that an option but not everyone wants digital, for some the idea of riding is get away from all that and HD always rides a fine line respecting what it’s customers want and getting caught up to others as far as tech.

I love my dyna but Indian has knocked this bike out of the park for a stock factory bike. Personally, I'm glad that the chief doesn't have the 90-degree air filter and the bigger mini fairing. As far as dealerships go, I've been broken down twice on my Harley and there wasn't a dealership around for miles and Harley is shutting down their smaller dealerships all over. There isn't a single Harley dealership between Denver and Kansas City now. Now the bike that I am super excited about is the new Buell Super Crusier. If they produce that bike similar to what they built as a demo it will be my next bike. Nice video!

I was all set to buy a Lowrider S in 2021.....and then Indian came out with the Chief DarkHorse. I bought the Indian because it was a newer design, had that awesome TFT display with navigation, was less common, handled like a dream, had ride modes and was cheaper+ I got a $500 loyalty bonus, etc etc etc. I would have been happy with the Lowrider S too, but I didn't want to be held hostage by the warranty, have to deal with corny salesmen and ring a bell for their web page and so on. The bike itself is amazing though.

@@RyanUrlacher On October 2022 The FTC sued Harley-Davidson LLC for illegally restricting customers’ right to repair their purchased products. The complaints charge that the companies’ warranties included terms that conveyed the warranty is void if customers use independent dealers for parts or repairs. The FTC ordered the company to fix warranties by removing illegal terms and recognizing the right to repair......I don't think this should be "news" to any of us in the motorcycle community. They are also known to trash $300 optima batteries in customers bikes and replace them with HD branded generic batteries at premium prices in order to "stay in compliance" with the warranty. They do the same with spark plugs. It's just a sleazy way to overcharge the customer. I have a brother who had catastrophic engine failure on his 2018 Street Glide that was 3 weeks out of warranty and HD wouldn't work with him at all, even though they KNEW about the oil sumping issue. HD loyalists have a form of Stockholm Syndrome, where they continuously get taxed, penalized, berated and insulted but just keep coming back for more. 🤔

at The One Show I test rode the Indian Sport Chief and the Indian Scout Rogue and it was an easy choice between those two for me. To use football analogies the Chief was a linebacker and the Scout was a quarterback. If motorcycles are about the thump the sport chief has it and if it's about nimble performance the Scout's the ride. I was surprised at how much heat came off the engine at stops on the chief, in late April (Portland Oregon), making me think it'd be torturous in the heat of summer for any kind of stop and go or slow speed travel. My impression of the Scout was that in the show room it seems like a tiny bike but on the road it fits like a glove and does exactly what I ask of it at every command. I also test rode the Yamaha Bolt because I thought those were interesting and comparing the Bolt to the Scout I'd say that the Bolt feels much more like a beginners bike and in order to even consider it over the Scout it'd have to be less than half the cost of the Scout, which could lead me into a decision based on money that I'd always regret.

I would argue that the screen on the Sport Chief is a great bonus. As someone who has destroyed 2 cameras on two phone due to vibration on my HD (with dampeners) and who as installed a small wireless Android Auto/CarPlay unit now, I much prefer not to have to even have to take my phone out of my pocket. If they come up with a way to mount the screen to the top of the risers, that's even better. Ride modes are extremely useful for someone like me who is an every day rider. I live in Texas and unless there is snow or ice on the road, I ride. Having a way to lessen throttle response ala tour mode in the rain is extremely beneficial. That being said, I would be hard pressed to buy another Indian. I was not happy with fit and finish on my Challenger. If looked like a 5 year old painted it in some parts and a toddler assembled it. Just overall not happy. The dealer support would be the second issue. I know I can usually find a dealer no matter where I am in the US within 50-100 miles, even in the sticks. Just not the case with Indian. What I would like to see with next years Low Rider S and ST is the Sportster S gauge option. I can't imaging it would be difficult to set up for other HD's, especially the softail line. I'd gladly pay 800-1000 for that gauge.

You’re right, a digital gauge should at least be an option. Not everyone wants it because for some the idea of riding is to get away from all that. And you are right, nothing looks like a Harley. I’ve heard several talk about lackluster paint and other things on Indians. HD does need to catch up on things like ride modes, though they do have that optional RDRS I think they call it that sorta does the same thing.

Great job Ryan. Looking at both of theses bikes for a near future purchase and this was certainly helpful and informative. On the Indian option for a passenger seat and foot pegs, according to Indian's web site they are available. If you select the Sport Chief and then go into the build section they are there. The pegs are $199 and there are several seat options with the price varying depending on what type you choose. Indian really needs to step up the availability of their bikes at the dealer level. I have been looking for a chief dark horse for almost two months now and no luck. I have been to four different Indian dealers within a hundred miles and nothing. Lots of scouts but zero chief dark horses, I know the sport chief has just been released but if it follows in the current chief availability pattern...well it may be a Harley instead of the Indian. I saw the Chief last Thursday that a guy was riding the demo from the dealership he works at. He had one for himself on the way. Definitely a nice bike. Accessories will be coming soon. In comparison to the H-D it’s a contender but here’s my take, You can’t beat H-D’s massive dealer network. Having that in my back pocket if I’m wherever with my Harley is just plain peace of mind. Indian is coming up but there not the dealer network that H-D is. On the flip side as far as products, The Indian Scout nails the sporty segment where H-D made a big boo-boo with dropping the Sportster. The new H-D SportsterS and nightster looks way too plastic for my tastes. Different strokes, different folks I guess.

You have good points Ryan. When I want information that isn't apparent from a gun manufacturer I can browse different firearm channels. I'm not watching a gun channel that only showcases H&K or S&W, I am watching channels that have their hands on everything and can give me perspectives like "the grip angle is identical to Glock 19, but it feels more natural and less boxy in your hand". Those are the kind of 2wheel channels that I try to watch as well, but with only a few exceptions one manufacturer gets behind a channel and the other cant touch it. (I am sure its due to some closed door contracts like "we will give you some free parts and give you a long term loaner but you commit not to accept similar offers from any other manufacturer")

Enjoyed the review and comments. I too wouldn't kick an Indian out of my garage but have not had the opportunity to own one yet. You did say one thing though that hit me like a slap in the face. Claiming Jochen Zeitz is hitting the mark as CEO of Harley is utterly laughable. Nothing could be further from the truth. Proof? Sure... BRONX. A true cutting edge bike that goes head to head with every other motorcycle manufacturer out there and would pull thousands into the Harley fold, yet, under Jochen Zeitz leadership they sit on the release. This is not only a clear cut gaff and a perfect example of tone deaf leadership but nothing short of fiduciary suicide. As so many Harley owners age out of the market Harley does not open up the brand to a new group of riders, instead opting to double down on trikes and touring bikes that are far too expensive for young riders. Truly sad and nothing but a short sighted focus on profits in the here and now at the expense of the companies long term future.

On a chief bobber dark horse. Not the exact same model but has some of the same features as the sport chief. Love it. Low center of gravity makes it easy to throw around and maneuver; pretty standard across cruisers but there's something about the dimensions of the bike that fit better to my frame. The ride modes are interesting; definite differences in throttle response between tour, standard, and sport modes. Not sure how much it changes actual performance numbers. Might be more of an individual preference thing. Definitely noticed difference in fuel consumption between the different ride modes. The 4 inch ride command provides good information on the vehicle itself during the ride. I found it user friendly and easy to connect to my phone and headphones. The navigation feature works well. However, I've noticed on longer rides, depending on region and coverage, it may take longer for the GPS to acquire the satellite and provide navigation service. All in all, great bike, super smooth, and in the past 10,000 miles has been very reliable and enjoyable.

I think the Indian Sport Chief has the proportions and silhouette over Harley's LR S . However, only a back to back extensive test ride on various roads (plu a closed circuit) will give a better reflection on the differences rather than a spec sheet. You can gauge so much by numbers but it's the seat of the pants impression that sells bikes. I ride a Street Bob 114 and absolutely love the thing. Coming from all types of performance bikes I still don't think it "need" any enhancing or upgrading. Sure you can knit pick just about anything but essentially, for road use it's more than enough in every area... The only bike I feel could have me (foolishly) trade or sell would be Buell's very desirable and very cool Super Cruiser 😬.

I had a 2016 low rider s and it was a great looking and riding bike ... but I traded in for a 2022 street glide st an have only 450 miles on it as I got it in June and I live in New England and have to store it in the cold and inclement weather we have hear and am anxiously awaited better weather soon to get back on it

@Truckin Biker yah but there's only two options that will cut it for a dyna replacement...this indian sport chief and the buell super cruiser that won't hit the street till 25'. I just see indian saying we got a dyna for you guys that hatley abandoned. And buell super cruiser 170+hp

Hey Ryan, I just found your channel. I'm hopefully going to be in the market for a cruiser within the next year or two. So I wanted to compare both bikes. And I do agree with you on most things when it comes to Harley vs Indian. However, there's one thing you forgot to mention unless I missed it, and that's the cruise control. The Low Rider S does come with it. However, for $252.00, you can get that feature. On the Indian sport chief, the cruise control is standard. Just wanted to point out that. I also agree with you on the lights as well. How is it that Harley charges you that much money yet doesn't give cruise control Standard or LED lights all around. I also agree that the high flow intake Indian should include that as standard. It just comes down to both brands. I want to nickel and dime you to get more $$$ out of you. As for more dealerships, please, that's a no-brainer. Harley easily wins there. However, I have noticed that Harley has started to shut down some of their low performer dealerships along with dealerships that have corruption in there. ( If you can't be honest with the customers about products you're selling, then you shouldn't be allowed to sell their products simply put). I really hope that in the future, Polaris steps up and starts building more dealerships. For me, I'm still split on which bike I like the most. However, I'm leaning more towards Indian. It seems like they offer a bit more bang for your buck in a way. Also, my local Harley dealership while the guys are awesome they do come off a bit pushy, which I'm not a fan of. Meanwhile, the Indian dealership, which is literally across the street from Harley they seem a bit more chill and won't nag you. I will say that if I had to consider a Indian Scout vs. the new Nightster S no competition there the Nightster S is in my opinion a better option. It's got more features it has more rider aids than Scout, and for a new rider like me who is still learning, that's a boon. Also, Nightster S has one thing that Scout doesn't have. A freaking fuel Guage. Come on Indian you sell your bikes at about the same price as a Nightster S, and yet they don't have a fuel Guage. 😔😔. So, the Nightster S is my top pick. However, the other 2 are a toss-up. Only time will tell which one I pick. Ok, I'm done with my rant. Peace out, Ryan. I look forward to seeing more of your videos

Good video. But I think you may want to look into Indian's 4" ride command display. You said it was useless due to limited capabilities. I disagree. It has GPS map, Bluetooth for phone, music, headset, all the bikes functions are accessible and easy to manipulate such as switching ride modes etc. I have the same display on my Super Chief Limited and feel spoiled compared to what all of my old bikes had to offer. Ride safe and enjoy the ride.✌️

I think it’s a great comparison that you did as the bikes are so very similar from two different manufactures. I actually really like the Indian sport chief, however, the aftermarket doesn’t support chief nowhere near as much as it does Harley Davison. That’s one of the main things stopping me from purchasing an Indian over a Harley is the aftermarket support such as exhaust systems, the factory exhaust system on the Indian sport, chief, and other bikes, or not aesthetically pleasing.

Can’t really give a decisive win to either. Both are great and it just comes down to what is important to you. The 1 CI more the LRS has isn’t going to be noticeable, so can’t call that a win. I’ll give the Harley the nod on the air cleaner, ability to customize, and dealer network. The SC gets a decisive win in tech, but not everyone wants a digital gauge so that isn’t a win to some. SC does have the Fox shocks but that 2018-present Softail mono shock frame is no joke either. Tough to call a winner there. Both awesome bikes and about the same price if you make everything more less the same.

Ive ridden both and the seating position is definitely more comfortable on the Indian. The Indian sport chief I rode had the optional 10” risers which I highly recommend and likely has something to do with the comfort level. The biggest difference was the seat-to-peg distance. I felt like my knees and hips were at too tight of an angle to be comfortable for a long ride. The Indian kept my hips and knees at a more relaxed angle which I really enjoyed and would be more comfortable for a longer time. I did not like the “lag time” in the fly-by-wire throttle on the Indian. It seemed somewhat disconnected from the engine and didn’t have that immediate response that a cable would have. I’ve ridden other bikes with fly-by-wire throttles but the Indian sport seemed the most disconnected I’ve experienced.

Indian needs a bigger tank and the performance air intake. Harley needs led and abs standard. Both bikes are nice but performance upgrades are more limited on the indian, lloydz which is awesome. If Indian really wanted to make the decision difficult, they should have brought all this to the game at $17k, $17,500. I don’t see them hurting LRS sells to any appreciable level when coming in at the exact same price point. Not the best move, imo. At this rate, it just looks like a LRS “chief” option for Indian riders.

Doesn’t the Harley have two-piston, axial mounted calipers up front on smaller rotors? Because you said they were neck-and-neck on braking? The Indian, afaik has four-piston, radial mounted Brembos on bigger discs. I don’t know about the feel of the two irl, but on paper that is no contest.

Too bad HD doesn’t sell at MSRP. They want $26,000 for a 2023 fat Bob at the Pensacola HD dealer and MSRP is under $19,000. The Indian dealer across the street will go below MSRP. Indian makes a better product, less accessories unfortunately, but not so bad that buying a Harley would be worth it

1. Regarding that “severe” shock angle! Am I wrong by thinking that the shocks instead of compressing are just ( well, compressing to some degree) “pivoting” just like swing arm ! ( that’s what it appears like, looking at shock angle) 🤔 2. Of all the reviews, nobody ever mentioned that front brakes are ( not just dual calipers, but …) radial mount ! 🧐☝️ ( even though it’s not a sport bike, doesn’t it still matter?! ) Advantage Indian 🤔
@RyanUrlacher
@RyanUrlacher Жыл бұрын
There is no increase in braking power with a radial setup versus a conventional rig. Rather, the lack of torsional flexing (lateral movement) means crisper-feeling brakes at the lever. Not sure most riders would be able to tell if they didn't know. IMO

I'm always coming back to South Park with Harley riders! Indian does not have a stock super load exhaust. I'm guessing many just go buy Harley for the sound ;) I'm leaning hard towards New Super Chief, over a RoadKing Special. Honestly, the Chief offers a better engine IMHO, Looks better and 2k-3k less!!! In all cases, man, 21-25k a new cruiser? Neither are really touring bikes, and unlikely I'm going to ride more than 2 hours in any given day. It's funny, because honestly, you go look at the Honda Rebel 1100 Limited at 11,500 BRAND NEW automatic trans, Abs, If you didn't mind the lack of impressive exhaust sound, it really is hard to justify the two big American bike prices! We pay so much more for the American Classic bike look! We all know Honda will outlast both these bikes at half the price! Heck, I have a 2001 Vstar 1100. Only thing it needs for this riding season will be new tires and oil change, LOL. I paid 2k for it and it's showroom new looking!

Excellent review, Ryan, as is your custom. I could live with either bike but I give the H-D the nod here because fit and finish is better (IMO), better chassis and more powerful engine (however slight).
