When I did my Lemons experience, at Toledo which was one of the only non-stop 24 hour races, our first driver got turned into the wall about 45 minutes in. We fixed the car, finished the race and won the Most Heroic Comeback award.

He didn't _actully_ oversee the build. He just added a few bullet points and assumed they'd do something resembling correct. Fully prepping a car is a very long list of things. Seasoned racers won't even remember the entire list. (and year after year racing the same car, that list gets longer and longer as the car figures out more inventive ways to kill you... throttle linkage? *ALL* the suspension bolts? (they do work loose) Axle nuts? Fuel rail nuts? (yes, we had the rail almost fall off once) When's the last time the wheel bearings were replaced?...) Yes, he should've at least asked, but I'm sure he had a lot to do.

I bought the red GTI in the video and got 3 friends together to run Lemons. I did a few things to the wiring and installed a fire bottle system. Changed the fluids and brakes. Bought the wrong tires of course, but it ended up okay because it rained on Sunday. I had 1 previous Lemons race in class B car (arrive and drive) and the other three had never been wheel to wheel racing. We had 2 mechanical issues that kept us off track for about 3 hours total. We had one black flag for oiling the track (oil sending unit) and we finished. I didn't even change the plugs. Was going to a week before the race but they were in so tight I was afraid I'd break one.
