The basic speed law is just that: "Reasonable and proper for the conditions." Numeric limits referenced in state law are the maximum allowable speeds under ideal conditions. In Canada, most speed limit signs include "Conditions Permitting." I'd like to see that adopted in the US as well). Now, I got my learner's permit the day I turned 16 (this was in 1977), but didn't take a formal Drivers Ed course until the following summer. One day during the classroom sessions, we took an older sample Massachusetts learner's permit test. In reviewing the test afterwards with the class, the instructor prefaced one question with the remark. "Now I doubt that anyone will have gotten the answer to the next question correct. What does a solid white line in the center of a two way road mean?" I raised my hand and said "I know the answer. It's C) Do Not Pass." After a pause, the instructor replied "Now can you explain to the class why it's the correct answer." My response "Because the use of yellow to separate opposing traffic on two way roads didn't becaome a standard until 1961. This test is from 1955, before that happened."

My drivers ed teacher in 2005 happened to be my mom's driver ed teacher from a totally different high school back in 1981. He was so old he fell asleep after taking us to the only major traffic circle nearby the school. It was 30 miles away in the town of Newton Grove, NC. We did the traffic circle a few times and got back on I-40 East. The other student and I didn't know that the next destination was supposed to be the 'World's Largest Frying Pan" in Rose Hill.. he always selected some cheesy local attraction for us to drive to... I drove a good while on 40 listening to his Jazz music on the radio. I finally woke him up as I took the exit at Castle Hayne, near Wilmington.

Not drivers Ed, but my drivers test. It was pouring down rain, and I missed a yellow light. When the drivers examiner looked over at me, like I had failed, I said oh well F it , hit the gas and did a wide fishtail into the Asheville DMV on a 1987 560SEC. She laughed and asked me why I had done it. I told her... “you were going to fail me anyway, so I might as well drive like I’m able while I can” She passed me anyway

I took driver's ed so my mom could get a break on her insurance. Found out after the examiner gave me my license that he almost failed me because 'you were too comfortable behind the wheel'. Welp maybe because I took the test in a Olds Cutlass station wagon with power everything but learned to drive on a 68 Chevy van with 3 on the tree, no windows on the side or back and standard steering had something to do with me being comfortable behind the wheel. Still doesn't beat a one handed rally driver tho

My instructor was a very bored black woman with amazing braids who didn't say a single word until the end: "Go inside, get your temp. I hope you ain't been driving illegally". I got my learners the week before my 16th bday. Now you have to wait a year between learners and a practice/limited license you have for the next year or some crap. I'd take Beautiful Braids over Def Leopard Drummer Dan.
@sct9134 жыл бұрын
Massachusetts has always been one year between permit and license unless you have formal instruction - then it's only six months. However, formal instruction gets your parents a break when they add you to their insurance, so it's a good idea to do it for that reason alone.

@jwernerny4 жыл бұрын
The biggest thing I learned in Driver's Ed was "never drive faster than you can see." His idea was to get us to slow down at night. Being brought up with European cars with European headlights, and being a lighting designer for the school musicals, I took it to mean you need to put better, brighter lights on the car so you can drive faster. On my rally car, that meant 7" headlights with 125/150w H4 bulbs and Marchal lights (one spot, one flood) with 130w bulbs. It also meant the car wouldn't idle with all the lights on, upgrading the alternator, and keeping a spare fan belt with me. That light setup also forced me to withdraw from a Canadian over night TSD rally, but that's a whole story of it's own.
@spyone48284 жыл бұрын
My driver's test story: I had actually been driving for several years, as my Dad had me take the wheel whenever we were going someplace starting around age 14. Since there was no penalty for taking your test in an automatic instead of a manual, I brought the station wagon instead of the beetle. But parallel parking was my weak point. It was just something I hadn't done much. So I'm driving the instructor around, and as we approach a lumber yard he says "Park up here." So I follow the procedures: I put on my turn signal, I pull past the parking space and stop. And the guy in the pickup behind me comes just close enough that I can't back into the space. I shift into reverse, but he doesn't take the hint. I stick my arm out the window and motion to him to come around me, but he doesn't budge. "Wave him around," says the examiner. "I did," I reply. And after long seconds, the examiner says "Nevermind. Just go." And he just had me drive around some more. He didn't ask me to parallel park again. So thank you, unnamed dud in a pickup truck who wouldn't pull around me on a narrow street within 100 feet of an intersection, but also wouldn't back up enough to let me park. You saved me from the only part of my driving test I was worried about.

One of his favorite things to do was when we lasted a cop , city county state or the like he was roll down the window as iwould drive by and either yell “ Hey!
