Great video as always. IMO good mpg pulling a tall big trailer. Everyone is complaining it didn’t weigh the same as other midsize test. The wind resistance is what takes mpg down more than an additional 1700 pounds. Plus the fact is nobody is buying a midsize to pull with non stop. This is perfect for a couple wave runners a few snowmobiles a smaller camper or utility trailers just like any other midsize. I love this gladiator but unfortunately I know it’s limitations and for what I tow it’s not made for it. Many people will enjoy this truck and fit their needs well. Thanks again. The reason the 3.6 Pentastar has 260 lb-ft of torque because it is a 3.6 liter engine there’s bigger V6s like GM’s 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 that puts out 305 lb-ft of torque, so 260 lb-ft of torque on the pentastar is good for the displacement of the engine it’s not like a 4.0 or a 4.3 which can put out 281 lb-ft to 305 lb-ft it’s only a 3.6 liter so it’s still comparable to a 3.5 which has 240-270 lb-ft of torque, I’m just saying, but I would definitely still recommend a V8 for towing.

Well, the f150 doesn't have quite the off road capabilities with IFS and doesn't have front diff lock, crawl gear, disconnecting sway bars, etc. BUT, I agree, unless you're doing actual trail driving, it's not worth it. Not when you can get a very well equipped XLT crew cab with a 2.7EB that's rated for ~7000lbs towing without having to get 4.10 gears for $37k. Or another 1000 for the V8. Use a bit of the money saved for a lift and larger tires. But I'm not a Jeep guy, so other than serious trail riding, I don't get the point of getting one.

Something that doesn't get mentioned (or tested) often is how much speed affects fuel economy when towing. I would love to see you guys take a gas and a diesel vehicle with the same trailer and do that loop at 60MPH, 65MPH, and 70MPH to show the difference in fuel economy. I couldn't help but notice the Gladiator was running nearly 4,000RPM just to maintain 70MPH on flat ground while towing that trailer. 8.5MPG is awful. My baby Duramax will get 9-10MPG if I were to tow our nearly-flat-nosed 5,000LB travel trailer at 70MPH and it would be running 3,000-3,500RPM to do it. In comparison, if I tow the same trailer at 60MPH then I average 14-15MPG. 98 miles @ 60MPH would take 1h38m. 98 miles at 70MPH would take 1h24m, a difference of 14 minutes. Running at 60MPH with these mid-size trucks also keeps transmission and oil temps down and reduces the load on the engine, just generally making for a better towing experience. 70MPH is great if you're towing with an HD diesel, but not to much with mid-size trucks. Even the difference between 60MPH and 65MPH is pretty big in terms of fuel economy and load/temps.

Tows well enough to get by and does better off road than most trucks. Diesel will be the go to for towing. Any news the news on the eco diesel power output? Also like to see you guys find a EcoDiesel to do a dyno test before and after the emissions Flash update.

You guys should really call Jeep out for not having a trailer brake control on this. You mention it, but they should be raked over the coals for creating this and then so heavily marketing the "best in class" towing capability, but not correctly equipping this truck to actually utilize that potential. As an example, was that trailer used for this video even legal? In Colorado it is my understanding that anything over 3,000lb needs trailer brakes. The Gladiator does not have TBC and the hitch did not seem to have a surge brake (1:48). For most States the trailer weight limit is between 3k and 4k lbs before trailer brakes are required by law. So Jeep made a truck that can tow over 7k lbs in some configurations yet did not add an option for a TBC so it could do it legally. This seems like a very poor design choice.
@ArmyStrongOH37th5 жыл бұрын
It most certainly can do it legally. In most pickups the brake controller is an option and until a few years ago none of them came with one from the factory. That’s why when you walk in to any trailer store they have them displayed so you can buy one and add it on.
@soliloquist5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can add a TBC to a truck so that it can trailer that weight legally. So it still remains that the Gladiator does not have one so it in fact can not trailer that weight legally. You just strengthened my statement.

Can you explain why the tow rating for the manual transmission Gladiator is so much lower than the automatic? Is it a warranty issue related to the clutch, or will the manual transmission overheat quicker? I've always liked towing with manual as the transmission doesn't continuously hunt for the right gear. I haul a 2,500 lb camper with my Wrangler JKU 6 speed and just leave it in 5th on the highway and it has no issue cruising with traffic.

Pretty good considering the only airflow designs taken into account are for heat extraction & air intake... Remove the doors, roof & drop the windshield... it’ll fail the decibel test & you’ll loose a few potato chips... might gain a quarter mpg. 😉

Good video. Since there is no factory brake controller available yet, I am curious to know how you connected your trailer brakes for this video. Does the Gladiator have a prewire socket under the driver side dash like my Grand Cherokee does?

I wonder what the difference would be with the 2.0 turbo or the diesel when it comes.

What is the rpm when tow flat surface vs incline mountain side is important due to transmission longevity. If V6 scream 6000 rpm on mountain side going 60mph, how long that transmission will last. Please do a incline towing with RPM video.

Pretty much all engines with OBD2 detect engine load , i have a scanner that allows me to read engine load on any engine with obd2 live while driving. My point being is all cars with adjust their tuning and transmission shift points and pressures when the load changes , yet you still need tow haul mode for specific reasons , like grade breaking , when you go down hill you no longer have engine load , how is the engine supposed to know what to due when the load goes away? that's why you need a tow haul mode or at least a option to activate grade braking. which you would think a rubicon would have some kind of hill descent control for crawling , maybe they should use the same switch but acts as a highway grade brake when going over a certain speed.

Drag increases exponentially. It's crazy to tow at 70mph. Slow down to 60-65 and save yourself a lot of money in fuel.

If you look under the intake pipe when he opens the hood you can see that it already overheated and spit radiator fluid everywhere.

The jeep says specifically not to use E85? or did you mean to say 85 Octane. I thought it was federally mandated all vehicles produced after like 2008 or something be required to have the ability to run on E85.

I like the Gladiator for being a mid sized truck with with a solid front axle. Just wish they could have a Hemi option or at least an upgraded 4.7L V8 but I'll have to wait for for the diesel review.

I went and test drove a Gladiator Rubicon today, and I found that in order to get that thing on the road I really had to push down on the gas peddle. Am I the only one who found the Gladiator to be underpowered??? It was just after a rain, but I felt like it should not have to work that hard to get going. That would make me nervous if I needed to get on and off the highway. any owners have some insight?

agreed, im in uah with a 70 speed limit on i15 through salt lake city, more times than i can count i will see a "dodge" ram pulling a triple axle fifth wheel in the left lane blowing by me at 80-85 while im going the speed limit, its just crazy. i have a 01 chevy 3500 duramax dually and i pull an old 88 kit companion travel trailer 26 foot. i usually do 65-70. once traffic ahead of me just came to a STOP, my now son in law was behind me and all he said was "what happened? i just saw 4 tire tracks on the road" i never locked up the brakes before on a dualy but im glad it was a 65 mph day, ended up about 4 foot from the stopped traffic ahead of me and of course traffic started moving again after i came to a stop. hate to see how those other guys would do.

I don't think you are comparing apples to apples. It was known in the beginning during the Gladiator reviews that only the Jeep Gladiator Sport S or Overland was going to be able to deliver the 7,650 lbs towing. The Rubicon version, as you stated, is heavier since it is more equipped for off road. That comes with a lower tow rating unfortunately. It will still be more than the Unlimited 3,500-5,500 regardless, but please try the lower trim packages for efficiency when adding more towing weight. Cheers, Steve
