currently own a ps5 for games and a macbook for college. always wanted a gaming pc but the cost of entry always kept me away especially over the last few years. and it seems a bit redundant considering what i have. recently was thinking about getting another 3ds or a switch to satisfy my nostalgia induced handheld cravings, but that's when i discovered the steam deck. still haven't pulled the trigger but am definitely thinking it'll be my next big purchase. steam deck seems like the perfect, cheap entry point to pc gaming and the great deals on steam. along with the perfect way to satisfy my desire for a handheld to take me back to my childhood. (also i bet with lower settings fps could be a lot better, which would be a trade off id gladly take)

I'm very impressed. I've always struggled to recommend a PC build to console gamers who are curious about PC gaming, because of the ridiculous cost of entry (GPU prices). The Steamdeck's base cost is amazing, for what you get. You can spend under 150 CAD on a fast 1tb nvme upgrade, 30-60 bux on a USB-C hub, and you not only have an amazing handheld, but a pretty capable gaming desktop, as well.

@@DiThi That's a bummer. Wish there was a setting to allow suspension of desktop apps in gaming mode rather than closing. I can see how they'd want to stop desktop process to dedicate all hardware resources to gaming mode but having a way to disable that if the user wanted would be awesome.

@@TaylorBrauer There's actually a way, kind of. I can launch plasma desktop as a game, in wayland mode, and then use the pause games plugin in docky to pause the whole desktop... However it's still buggy (mainly with input handling) and I can't set the resolution or use multiple displays, at least not yet. I can only set the resolution of the whole plasma session, and it will be scaled in whatever screen I'm using. If I find a way to open gaming mode without closing Xorg that would be awesome. My “gaming” PC is over 12 years old and couldn’t justify the cost of a complete upgrade. The specs were amazing back when it was put together, 16gb ram, 3.2ghz 4 core i7 and a Nvidia GTA 970, it still plays modern games but maybe not on ultra high settings but does the job. I ended up getting a steam deck with pretty much the set up you showed except I got a 15” portable usb c monitor and wireless/blue tooth devices so now I pretty much have a mobile mid level gaming PC rig that I can travel with 😂. Handheld portability is certainly a plus, but for usable storage you need to get the $700 model. For around the same price or just a little more, you can get a decent gaming laptop with more storage, higher resolution, and native Windows games (without having to worry about Proton). Nice device, though. Can you use external storage for games? You can't install too many games with 512 GB.

What software do you use to connect deck to the PC?
@TaylorBrauer
@TaylorBrauer 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I understand your question but there's no software involved. I'm just using the Anker usbc hub with the Deck, connecting accessories, and then using desktop mode on the Deck.

Good video man! I have my steam deck in shipping limbo, but this is what I wanna attempt to use my deck for. I would like it to be a replacement for my old laptop, as well as take my games on the go. Keep up the good work. You earned my sub. I wonder how well windows will work if you have the same setup. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks, Jeremy! Glad you enjoyed. I hope your deck arrives to you soon. Let us know what you think when you get to using it. tbh, I'm hesitant to install until valve has a more mature bootloader and support for the OS. I really want to try Windows but also I don't want to risk anything going wrong with my Deck, if that makes sense.

@@TaylorBrauer I just got my shipment tracking number for my deck. It’s scheduled to be in on Monday. So can’t wait for it to be in! I did a lot of research and the best thing I see right now is to install windows via an sd card and boot it off of it with windows to go.

Do the graphics look blurry on a 1440p monitor? Will it look better on a 1080p monitor?
@TaylorBrauer
@TaylorBrauer 2 жыл бұрын
When in desktop mode you can set the resolution to whatever your monitor supports. You can set the graphics to 1440p on a 1440p but your frames will suffer. Setting it to 1080p on 1440p will cause it to look a little blurry but you'll get better frames. There's also the option of FSR which does some upscaling to prevent blur.

After experiencing resolution and refresh rate inconsistencies when switching between desktop mode and Steam OS on a 4K display. I decided to purchase a 1080p gaming monitor. I purchased the BenQ EX2710 monitor and I can confirm it works flawlessly between Steam OS and Desktop mode. As stated on your video, when outputting to an external display, Steam games run better in 1080p in Desktop mode. However my emulators run better in Steam OS via EmuDeck. Having a 1080p display offered a flawless experience when switching between the two modes.

Considering while in desktop mode you cannot download directly to your SD card & have to use the internal storage…which is nothing, (64GB model). ABSOLUTELY NOT. I want to sell mine

Great video dude. Just started exploring my Steam Deck oled and it’s very helpful. Couple questions though. Say, after I used external monitor for playing games and I want to play on the steam deck itself do I need to change monitor settings to select steam deck monitor as a primary? And which feature did you use to screen fps counter playing games in desktop mode? Thanks?
@TaylorBrauer

Thank you! The OS should re-priortize the Steam Deck screen for you after unplugging it from an external. I'm using the built in Steam overlay FPS counter.

@@traynor1987 people loved that game when it came out. I never got excited for it but I could tell they did a good job. But even back then people new it was pushing the N64 to it's limits and at times didn't run as well as desired. Probably why they put it on GameCube with no graphical upgrades at all, which is typical of Nintendo, they sometimes don't make any sense.
