I think all this thing needs now is a swappable battery chamber, nobody wants to open their deck just to change the battery when it eventually goes bad, but it will be nice to have something like that as the battery starts to run out you could just swap it out for a fresh one and charge that one while you play with the other one, like the micro SD card that you can add in there could hold a bunch of games, yeah I get it it's like a cartridge, but the point is to make this thing as convenient as possible.

I bought the $700 steam deck after tax from them and they refused to give me a refund on a $10 game that they updated and I couldn't play it. That's not the first time either. Well done, finally a review that puts things in context, with how it all started ten years ago, with SteamOS/Steam Controller/etc and how Valve put everything they've learned in practice. One thing that you left out though is Proton, which is one of the most important ingredient in the Steam Deck. Without it, the Deck would be just another (mini) Steam Machine with just a couple of games. The first Steam Machines were supposed to kickstart developers's interest in creating Linux games, and they did to some extent, but not nearly enough to fill the huge gap in the number of available games. Proton is filling that gap by just using the (majority of) existing Windows games, and by telling developers "OK, just develop for Windows as you normally would, we'll take care of the rest". Well, is a bit more complex than this, but that's basically it. Proton and related tools, the magic juice.

I always wanted a gaming pc but I never had the money, then I didn't have time for gaming anymore. I lost a lot of interest in gaming in my late 20s and planned on just being outside, gardening, reading and hiking in my 30s. Then I got very ill. I have my fifth surgery this year coming up and it doesn't get less scary over time. I got a ps5 from my sister earlier this year and it helped me a lot to distract myself from anxiety and pain. I also have a used switch which is nice but it lacked a lot if the things I wanted from gaming hardware. After a lot of consideration and the chance that my health journey won't be finished soon, I decided to buy the oled steam deck. It's just more practical for when I am bedridden or in hospital. I hope it arrives before my surgery so I can set everything up as I want it to. This is probably the only gaming pc I will ever own and I feel like I made my peace with my teenage-girl-self who desperately wanted a gaming pc. First thing I'm going to do is to properly mod skyrim lol. But honestly, I am so glad this thing exists.

Gaming on the steam deck reminds me of analog photography (whereas gaming on desktop would be digital photography). There's something about analog that is a breath of fresh air to the whole experience and makes me appreciate subtle things more. Same with the steam deck, I think you captured it beautifully when you said that the steam deck practically revitalized portions of your library that were gathering "digital dust". Games I lost interest in suddenly were at the forefront of my backlog because I simply wanted to see how they were handheld and then I stuck with them. I cannot believe we live in an age where you can get into PC gaming for only $400. I mean the fact you can even use this thing for non-steam launchers and emulation, and self-modification is fully supported by Valve just makes it a no-brainer. Definitely going to be picking one of these up this next Black Friday if I can! I have had mine since August. I got it with the intention of it supplementing my desktop as well as replacing the PSP I have been using for emulation through the 16 bit systems and PS games and a smattering of various homebrew (gogo cfw). I absolutely love it. I have been playing on handhelds since the early 80s (look up Microvision, came out 45 years ago, a decade before the Gameboy). With them always being part of my arsenal. Even when I switched from home consoles to desktop PCs back in the early 00s, I have always had some kind of portable. It is stunning to see just how far we have come with these little things. The only thing I disliked was the design of the case. It should have been designed to hold the charger and dock. A simple compartment under the deck would have been perfect and since the dock uses the same exact cord as comes with the deck itself, it would only need to hold one of those. The case even has the space for it, but they used it to put that useless elastic strap on the back. Still the fact that the case is standard for all models, from the getgo, is great. This is, shall we say, not exactly common. So I did grab a third party case which has room for a charger, dock, controller and miniature keyboard/trackpad. In safe locations. I do use the Valve case when I am inside my house, since it is smaller and slightly quicker to use (the third party case has a separator between the halves of the clamshell and an extra element that protects the screen itself, great for being on the go, but if I just want to put the deck to sleep for a half hour and keep it safe from my cats, is overkill). But I transfer it to the larger case if I am going out. So that I have those things on hand. addendum: Ryse was one of the first games I played on mine as well, that game really is underrated and is still gorgeous (though I have noticed in perhaps the last year or so, a lot more love being shown to Ryse, I think a lot of people today who never played it much or at all, are looking at it, seeing that it still looks amazing and giving it a shot, I also think that a lot of people who played it when they were in middle school or high school then never thought of it again, are coming back and reevaluating it now that they are older, it came out a decade ago afterall, November of 2013). Along with 40k Space Marine. addendum 2: I grabbed the 256GB version, complemented with a 512GB card. Current number of games installed, 69. With ~30GB free split between the card and onboard storage. (I swear this is coincidental, I would own it had I intended to have that number show up)

What I appreciate is that valve created this in the hopes that people would rip it apart and do whatever they wanted with it. They released it with the mentality of, "once you pay for it, it belongs to you go crazy" which is how all products SHOULD be. Not restrictive in their abilities and customization.

I'm going through a similar realisation that since getting the deck I struggle to find a reason to even bother turning my PC on. I'm currently playing through Elden Ring and The Witcher 3 and am always blown away by how well the deck holds up on these titles when I boot them up. It's arguably the best piece of gaming hardware I have purchased in recent history and can even give it credit for revitalising my love for gaming

A year ago I made a choice between the Deck and the Switch. I chose wrong. Nintendo has never let me down before, but this is the first console I got that I could just let the collect dust. Totally uninspiring, even if it’s technically pretty good. I’ll probably get BOtW 2, and then abandon the thing.

@@arnoldfreeman2885 What specifically about the switch let you down? I mean it isn't a PC, it was never going to compete with devices like the deck that are much newer and twice as expensive.

A highlight of it is repairability. You can DIY fix/upgrade anything on it as long as it fits. Now, a really baller move from valve would be if a future steam deck iteration on a new CPU platform comes out (Zen4+), they keep the custom form factor the same as the original deck, so you can literally upgrade your handheld if you want to.

recently got my hands on my own steam deck, and i love the fact that i can leave my laptop at home, and continue my save portably, also negates having to buy the same game (if the game even exists) on the switch to be able to take, it, but your not gauranted being able to continue the same save file. sometimes when i have downtime at work I like to play some games, and its nice to not have to, again, lug my laptop around.

This was very helpful. I've got a great PC gaming setup and haven't really needed portable gaming, but now maybe I'm reconsidering. After this video I went to Steam and after a bunch of clicking Steam analyzed my actual library and listed which were "verified" and which were "playable". I already have enough verified and playable games to keep me busy for a long time!

Great video! You're clearly knowledgeable, you did your research, and the review was well structured. Although you didn't really talk about the experience of actually using the Deck as a PC. You mostly talked about it from the perspective of a handheld, which is fine, but then why name the video like that? A follow-up video where you talk about the desktop mode and using it as a daily driver would be cool.

You can totally main a Steam Deck. I do... I got mine a little bit before my older gaming laptop died last year, and by the time it passed on, I was enjoying the Deck so much that I had zero desire to buy another laptop or build another PC... and I never did. I love the form factor, and I've spent many a night with it docked to my living room projector playing handheld PC games blown up on a ten foot screen on my wall. It's fantastic.
