I don’t understand why it’s so hard for some pundits to say “we are not the best, but we will fight our hardest to win.” There’s no shame in saying you’re the underdog when comparing yourself to the likes of Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, etc. In football anything can happen. But to say that they should be thinking about Brazil in the semis when they likely won’t even finish first in the group is ridiculous. Classic CONCACAF punditry constantly overinflating themselves before they eventually get knocked out halfway through the tournament.

I gotta say the Usa doesnt see the limitations they have- which is good to dream about little bit - but you have to have players in the top teams or leagues in the world to gain another level- those teams Argentina, Brazil, Colombia , Ecuador have most of their players in top leagues - premier, spain, germany the list goes on- you have to have players that play in an elite level - compete to play in their teams for a spot- if you dont have that you cannot aspire to win big international tournaments- is like having AAA playing Liverpool for a championship- I mean it could happen and vegas would pay big - but not likely- and the MLS is good - but is not better than the Brazilian or Argentinian tourney- and those guys leave for Europe to play for real glory

The struggle with the USA team is that they’ve hit a plateau. And it’s a problems they’ve had for years now. How can they elevate their game to the next level. we already know they’re a concacaf power house. But can they elevate their game to compete with bigger nations. And get results on a consistent basis. they struggle against South American giants. they are up and down vs European giants. and most importantly can they produce consistent results in competitions that matter. not in friendlies. That is the problem and it’s a difficult one to fix. it’s not just the coaches and players but a question the entire federation needs to ask themselves

Well, Uruguayan here! If you got out of the group (I think you will) you play either the first or the second of group D , probably Colombia or Brasil, and uruguay plays the other ( im assuming both of us go to the quarterfinals) if you were to win that game, you would play the winner of the other leg , Uruguay again or whoever they played against. All rivals before the final would be from our same group or Group D. And in the finals someone for groups A and B, most surely Argentina but could be a suprise, maybe Ecuador but I doubt it. Hope this clarified the matter!!

This current incarnation of the Uruguay team have only played 5 games together under Bielsa yet have soundly defeated both Brazil and World Champion Argentina.. To be perfectly honest, as an American fan I couldn’t care less which team we’re going to be facing because they’re all going to be difficult. the US doesn’t even have experience playing against South American opposition for quite a while. that’s my biggest issue.

@@xaviergough9359 yeah, I was thinking of the same way. They were really unlucky in Qatar and maybe they could’ve actually put up a fight a little bit more against England than Senegal would’ve had. Also, I believe there were the second youngest squad coming into that World Cup so that means they’ll have a lot of hunger coming into this tournament. Like I said before any team is not gonna be easy. You just don’t sleep on South America as a whole.

@@xaviergough9359 Ecuador is scary asf, they not famous here for being goal scorers, but they are phisically very strongs and muscular, and the last World Cup playoffs, Brazil were way better with Tite, Raphinha, Anthony, Neymar, Coutinho, Paquetá, Vini JR, Casemiro, Fabinho, it was an elite team, Brazil won every game just could not beat Ecuador, it was a draw, they have Ener Valencia, one of the best strikers in the world.

At this point Mexico and USA should already be striving for more if they wanna be at the elite level. Obviously Mexico's quality of team has gone down the last few years so for them getting out of the group would be a success as for USA reaching the semi or final is a must in order for it to be a success in my opinion.

USMNT better be practicing penalty shootouts because champions might have to go through a few of those for a title. I don't see the US winning Copa America, but they could pose a serious threat to Uruguay in the group stage. Teams like Argentina are incredibly tough to beat in knockout rounds. Good luck.

@@dagosegovia843 Qualifiers and tournaments are completely different. One victory over Brazil and Argentina does not settle a question. You might just see Uruguay get thrashed at Copa America. Do not be fooled by one result. Recent history at TOURNAMENTS does not support Uruguay's chances. I do not think they're a tournament type of team. They will not win the Copa. It will be either Brazil or Argentina.

@@xaviergough9359 Have you seen Uruguay's current team play? They run like cheetahs. Their midfield could be argued to be one of the best in the world at the moment. They have the captains of Real Madrid and Barcelona on their squad. Because of their speed, their counter attack is deadly. Their high press is incredibly effective as their opponents don't even have time to breath let alone try and break out. They are defensively sound as Uruguayan teams have always been and have the ability to win back the ball. All this in just 5 games under Bielsa. Their top players are 22-25 years of age and waiting on the wings are their entire Under 23 World Cup Champion team. This team is good already but has the potential to be scary good by this coming summer not to mention the next WC. Anything is possible as we all know but my money is on them.

@@richardthompson3346 Yes, those attributes you describe are signature Bielsa tactics, but there's a way to defeat this system. Do not be fooled. Humility goes a long way. Saudia Arabia shocked Argentina in the group at WC. I think we'll see some unexpected results. Having captains at those clubs means nothing. Argentina defeated the strongest team in the world--France--which I highly doubt Uruguay is capable of. Good on them for their victory, but tournaments are a collective long game and sometimes you will face the cruel fate of penalty shootout eliminations. Entirely possible Uruguay loses one. Argentina have not lost a penalty shootout since the final at Centenario 2016.
