Even with corona we managed somehow to make a kind off regular video for you! This time we make Mikkie's childhood dream come true. Thanks to Ray Mears showing how indigenous people could use a Parang for almost everything Mikkie has always wanted a Parang. Today we finally get to test one after all these years! The parang is not the same as a machete! The weight and thickness kinda makes it a crossover between Axe and machete. A jack of all trades is a master of none they say,... so how will it perform?

one more thing to consider...weight. the Ax is 43oz, and the Parang is 30oz. The parang is 30% lighter (or the ax is 43% heavier). For backpacking, that might be a head turner. Besides, the parang is easier to pack. One downside of the parang, as relayed to me from a friend. People camping near him get a little nervy when he pulls out his parang. No one seems to care when someone wanders with an axe. He's been told it looks like a weapon. I think it's because it's unusual, and doesn't fit categories easily. i've looked at them before....I think I might have to pick one up. and, since you compared to the axe I want to get, you really nailed the comparison for me....cheers!

I'm a machete guy. Always have been. Even on hikes or canoe trips in Sweden I bring a machete and not an ax. An ax is better for splitting prepared wood. But now you need a (chain)saw to prepare the wood. Also an ax is more dangerous to use most of all when tired. The kukri has an interesting shape but is not the best. It's more a hype. If it was the best people in Asia, Africa and South America would have started using them long time ago. Parang, Golok but my most preferred when backpacking is a short thin blade Latin machete.

@akivaliaho5166
@akivaliaho5166 4 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with an axe being really that dangerous compared to a machete. Machete has a huge cutting edge compared to an axe. Of course you need to have experience and technique with both tools but I personally feel swinging a 30 - 45 cm blade has more change to go wrong. Most people hurt themselves with an axe because they split firewood in a dangerous manner (keeping your left hand on the log and chopping your fingers off by missing while being drunk) Here's Uncle John showing some very cool and safe techniques with an axe, always keep the cutting edge as far as possible from your body: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5nIc2abiaqorKc

@@hb6747 Nepal area. But most Asian people still use a parang or goloc model.
@StevanOutdoor
@StevanOutdoor 4 жыл бұрын
@@akivaliaho5166 It's this huge cutting edge that makes it safer to use. If you swing an ax but don't hit perfect the small and often rounded cutting edge of the ax will bounce of but the swinging motion will continue possibly landing in your foot or leg. If you don't hit perfect with a machete it's still the cutting edge digging in to the object and doesn't swing towards your feet or legs. It's just not a perfect hit. This is actually what the video you recommended is showing and the guy is explaining. This danger of not a perfect hit and the ax continues in this swinging movement bouncing off. You also see the guy using a lot of batoning with the ax putting the project on a tree stump. But when you don't have a tree stump in nature, what to do? Or the wood is not perfectly cut straight so it stands on his own or it gets to small of a surface to stand on it's own. You can now baton again or use a 'chicken stick'. Also when using an ax to baton the distance between edge and head is longer than with a knife or machete meaning not placing the ax perfect or not hitting it perfect with the baton will also change the direction of the edge causing it to break out and go elsewhere. Of course if I go to a perfect campsite with a perfectly straight cut stump and many perfectly cut logs for the fire I bring an ax to get the job done quicker. But these are hard to find when traveling in the woods or jungle. It's not just when you're drunk but also when tired, cold, hungry, dehydrated, sick, in a hurry, etc. when things go wrong really quick. Enough explanation?
@StevanOutdoor
@StevanOutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
@Joe Faultroy True that Machete means something different to some people. To me it's a big knife (over 10" blade) suited for chopping as a primary task and some as combat blade indeed. I did check out these Bidor Parangs and Goloks and they look good but considering the price, adding p&p from the US to The Netherlands and than add 21% VAT they are pretty expensive here. Might pick one up when I visit the US. I do have these CS Bowie machetes but these are indeed more suited for combat. Also have a few of the Condor mountain bowies and they are a bit thinner and shorter but with the same goal and picked them all up on sale. What type I bring (blade shape and thickness) depends on the expected tasks at hand and what's the common style in the country I visit. The length I adjust to what fits inside my backpack. It's fine to have it outside the backpack once in the bush but not from the airport to the bush. I picked up (on sale) a Gerber BG mini Parang and with a 9,5" blade that even fits inside my 35 liter day pack. I still have to test it. I have all sorts and styles of machetes (including kukhri) and also the Ontario Survival Bowie the Esee Cleaver and Varestuleka Skrama and short Skrama but would not describe them as machete. I learned to use the spine of the machete (or knife) as much as I can and I do practice with machetes in the kitchen. I have a video about that also with a Tramontina. I changed the shape from a Bolo Machete to more a sheepfoot blade. So if I was a farmer or homesteading and the prime use was to cut down grass like vegetation it would be a 18" Tramontina for sure, but since the courses I'm gonna teach are in Argentina (after the pandemic) I'm not sure yet what to bring. I might just settle for the CS Bushman and buy me a local machete there. I also did not bring a machete to Colombia but bought local. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXeponWEnc6Sn7M

There’s a solid reason they use 1075. If they used a harder “super steel” and you hit a rock or something there’s a higher chance of the blade chipping out big chunks of the edge etc.

i am a malaysian. the malaysian and i think also the indonesian parang (PAR-RUNG) usually have the rat tail tang in the handle to reduce the vibration and to have the weight more towards the front of the parang. and the handle which we call the HULU PARANG are usually made from wood to further reduce the vibrations and for aesthetic purpose. but the plastic hulu is much more cheaper for mass production thus reduce the price and time making it. for me personally, i prefer the design of straight edge with slightly curve at the tip more like a knife ( static.educalingo.com/img/ms/800/parang.jpg ) , and also the 'parang atap' ( cf.shopee.com.my/file/70875ed34398f1eef3ff553339edc4f4 ) style which have straight edge from the hulu to the tip. this design for me is much more stable during the chopping because it lands to the wood and didnt slide backwards. unlike the 'parang duku chandong' like in this video tends to slide backwards while chopping and the weight balance do feels is not what i preferred. usually normal parang like parang atap will cost from 4 usd and can be be bought in hardware or sometimes in a convenience store because malaysians do use more parang rather than an axe. we also didnt baton the parang and usually just use the chopping method. feels great having you guys testing the parang. maybe next time if you manage to get the parang atap, you might do a test or comparison. just something to share here, watching your video standing on a morakniv robust while it is sticking at a tree is what make me ordered the robust and basic last night. thanks mate for the great reviews.

A properly used axe will always win over a machete, kukri, etc from my experience when it comes to chopping wood. There's just something about its weight and shape that just does the job perfectly. A parang would be way more useful for asiatic forests however because of its versitility. Big fan of the channel btw.

Still like my Bark River Dakar!!! A2 and built to do major work. Not to heavy, but has enough metal to cut through the bigger stuff. Backed by my Skrama of course

Goed verhaal weer, manneh!

Martin must be a great cook if he can use an axe or a spyderco bug for food prep.

Love you guys, so happy you reviewed this one. Been kicking around the idea of buying one. Have a Bushlore from them I've been happy with. Didn't like the sheath although it was high quality, it rode to high on my belt for my taste.

Really the best of Condor!!! Nice video guys. I liked the griddle/wok cooker over the fire. How do you guys like it? If you do not mind mentioning... Who makes this, and is it something available/affordable? I could see outfitting my rafting customers with this rugged and simple set-up. Thanks.
