Mike, hi! I need your help. My terrible contractor just poured my 9-inch thick, 800 sf, 20 yards of concrete driveway and he did terrible job on the finish. It looks so uneven and ugly. The concrete is solid 5000 psi. I don’t want to rip it and replace it as per the suggestion of two other contractors I called for an opinion. I’m afraid if I resurface it will chip from the weights of my cars and the weather- I live in NYC. please guide me on what to do.

The folks who have posted negative comments fail to recognize a few basic points. This is clearly a patch, or surface repair...that's what the customer could afford and requested. Aside from aesthetics, repairs and patches of this nature can be VERY durable when top quality products are used with proper preparation installation. It's true that lifts and cracks caused by roots or expansive soils will not be cured by surface corrections, but no professional would ever assert they would. I've been in concrete and plaster construction and repair for 50 years, and find current materials are the greatest ever!! Fast /slow curing flexibility, adhesives, accelerators, flow enhancers, synthetic admixtures, allow creative and durable repairs better that ever before. Mike does excellent job demonstrating the right way to accomplish professional and long lasting repairs using quality materials and professional techniques that most DIY individuals can do with a small investment in tools, materials, time, and experience.

This is why I go to KZbin. To find professionals who care about their work, sharing a lifetime of experience. If there's one thing I''ve learned over 57 years, it's that it is less about the tools and materials, and more about who the person is doing the job, and their skills, values and principles - an honest day's work. Thanks for being here.

I wish my dad would have done this around their pool. He spent over $18,000 redoing the concrete around the pool and it did not look nearly as bad as that lady's. I wish I would have known it too! I repainted my patio around my pool, but I wish I would have done this prior to painting it. Thanks again for sharing these wonderful videos! God bless you. 🙏❤️🙏.

The two year follow up speaks for itself, nice work! Interesting that the concrete is discolored in one area - looks like it's in the similar spot where you filled in the more heavily spalled area with the blue bag mortar mix. Regardless, I'd take discoloration over cracking and spalling any day! Love your videos, keep it up!

Love your videos. I live in a small town in north dakota and started taking on small paver patio and retaining wall jobs after I retired from my civil engr gig. Just wanted to stay active and work at my own pace as I work alone. Over the last few years I have picked up quite a bit of work resurfacing concrete driveways and sidewalks. I am not an expert on much, but I can say without a doubt that you do it right. Too many concrete contractors out there that know little to nothing about the concrete they place and what adding too much water to the batch/mix does to the finished product in a short time in ND's climate. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching.

Mr. Day. Appreciate your taking the time to do a follow up on your repair. I live in high desert (almost 1 mile ASL in NV) and we get extreme temps. From 105° +/- in the summer to -8° +/-in winter. A portion of my driveway is spalled badly and living on a fixed income am forced to either live with it or learn to do the work myself. I appreciate the videos. Gives me the knowledge and confidence to do it myself. Having lost a hand while serving in the military I’m always looking for the tools that will make the job easier for me so I appreciate your touching on that subject as well. I started on my driveway this afternoon and Will be (hopefully) finishing tomorrow after a trip to the orange store in the morning for retardant. That cement all stuff sets SUPER fast! Some of the negative comments are just silly. I am sure you gave the customer multiple options to repair/replace the walkway. You said in the beginning of the first video that this was to be a lower cost repair and the homeowner wanted this done. Maybe the homeowner just didn't have the funds for a full repair. This served its purpose for what it was, a resurface repair. I think it looked good. I think the 2 cracks may have been migrated if for had some stress relief edges, but what do I know.

Great job mate. Could have benefited with some expansion joints on those cracks, quick grinder cut. The discolouration was the lowest point and your highest fill. It's hard to say why the stain occurred, could of been curing time, rising damp, chemical reaction.

One of the commenters made a good point about repairing concrete with deeper cracks, with the methods you used. what is to stop the concrete from upheaval again, causing the cracks to come back? I live in an area with heavy freeze thaw, which caused cracks in the concrete. How is this overcome, so that a nice repair job like this, isn't a waste of money? For the record, I am a firm believer in repair over replace, but I do have genuine concern on whether or not cracked concrete can be repaired in a way that it won't crack again in the same spots. I'm sure the concrete sealer helps and I'd be all for that, if it does really work to help prevent future cracking.

Honestly I'm more worried about the paint/coating lol. Rapidset cement all and mortar mix are great products. Ive used them for years, and even seeing the work years later they look great. Never done resurfacing with them tho like you show on this vid and the original one.... Like Ive said, I love the rapid set stuff, but you def need to try some out on something not serious if its your first or second time. Getting to know how the product works and sets along with using their set control additive is super important and only comes with a bit of experience. Got introduced to the rapid set cementall when I ran my own welding business and used the cement all for grouting my handrails into the concrete. Thanks for the vid. Oh, Rapidset makes a resurfacer now that I saw at home depot... wonder how it works againts the blue and brown bags...?Wonder if youve tried it out now.

My guess Is all the “Armchair Experts” who only gave it 12 months, have no experience with salt and concrete. My best guess is the salt was ponding at the original big breakout area, causing the original surface degradation. Important note, surface degradation. The staining will be from the same thing, ponding salt. (Check if it’s a salt water pool while your at it) Then scrub it down with a 10-1 hydrochloride acid wash and it will look as good as new. You only need to replace the concrete if it’s breaking up from the bottom up, not from the top down. And all your damage was just surface damage, 100% reparable, because it was caused by chloride iron ingress (salt) not tree roots or clay soils lifting and cracking the slab. Nice work by the way, not enough in the trade reference SSD

I'm looking to repair my own backyard and came across your video. It has very useful tips but why didn't you address the 2 cracks? I went back to check the main video and it seems you didn't fill in the existing cracks fully. The one in the middle was just glossed over with the trowel which looks nice on top but is hollow in the bottom. I think when the path cracked it actually detached into 2-3 separate pieces and just moved again after it was repaired. The rest of the job was great but I'm not sure why you didn't even acknowledge the cracks.

I think that was deliberate though not explicitly pointed out. That will be the weakest point in the repair, so if it cracks, it will crack in that exact place to relieve stress. I don't think the repair would have set long enough to cut it with a saw (and the stress problem will be reintroduced), but now that it's been 2 years, they should be able to just take a saw and make those edges nice and clean.

Those are joints, they are meant to crack so the crack is horizontal and its expected that they would eventually crack. the joints in your concrete if you look are all cracked. That is controlling the crack, vs. it just cracking where ever.

That rapid set mortar mix has a stronger psi rating than most “concrete” mixes. Not sure what part of the country you’re in, but that should last a while

Great job! I've got a similar walkway that runs from the bottom of my deck to the driveway. And it has a crack where moisture has caused settling. There's a gap that's about 1/2 to 3/4 inch that needs leveling and filling in. The rest of the walkway is in great shape. So, I dont really need to resurface the whole walkway. But I'd like the color to match. I live in central Alabama (suburb of Birmingham, AL), so we don't have the severe winters that you do. So, severe winters are not an issue for me. And the concrete is 23yrs old, if that matters... I love the job you guys did! Wish you were closer! I'd rather hire you guys to do the job. But, you made it look relatively easy. So I'd like to give it a try... And suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Just curious... what is causing the discoloration.. is it from above ( the elements) or from below (the old concrete)? Thanks

So my parents house has a chattahoochee entryway, here in Florida. Would this combination be good to do together, as it's only slightly larger than this size in an L-shape. Would obviously need a some kind of primer underneath and probably a thicker cement-all layer, like 1.5 inches. We probably wouldn't do a mortar mix layer, either.

As long as you get a good bond overlays work just fine. Everybody is a keyboard pro. Keep making videos and spreading the good word lol

Hi, I have watched both videos. I took out a very large loan to have all the concrete ripped out and repaired around my inground pool. But then, i couldn't find anyone (Like you) to do the work. We have to do this around our pool deck. So this would also mean ripping out plumbing for the pool. Do you stand by your repair methods? I feel like with your instruction I could do this. And that would not only save me tons of money, we are talking no less than 40K. So please answer! Do you ever come to Cincinnati, I would literally pay you to do this for my pool deck. And we are planning to use "Cool" Deck paint as well. This would literally be life changing for me.
