I would rather be embarrassed by having a chipper in my bag and playing better, than the embarrassment I feel when I chunk or blade a wedge around the green.

Yes, I've got one on order too. Every round I have two-three tight lies around the green that I can't seem to ever make correct contact with and add an extra two strokes per hole. If this club give me better contact I don't care what my buddy think. I only have 12 clubs in the bag currently so I won't be giving up anything other than the price of the club.

Thanks. I just guessed that most people looking to buy a chipper would do so because chipping was their weakness, so getting feedback for someone else who struggles would be more helpful. I mean, at first I thought it might be a waste of a club, but that was from my perspective, someone who struggles with a chip would die for anything that feels easier to use, and I think he said he was more comfortable with the chipper than an 8 or 9 iron👍🏼

I've noticed that both Mark Crossfield and Matt Lockey have added chippers. Both are ~5 handicaps. I've since taken out my 56* sand wedge and 60* lob wedge and replaced both with a single 58* sand wedge. This made room to add a Cleveland Smart Sole 4 Chipper. I've only had it for 2-3 weeks and am still getting used to it. In that limited time, I've never "duffed" a chip and rarely left the ball short of the hole (at least any shorter than a 1-putt.) At the moment, I'm just as good (no better or worse) with the chipper as I am with my other wedges. However, over time, I expect (hope) to master the chipper and it'll become my go-to short-game club. At the moment, preowned Ping and Cleveland chippers are selling for 85-90% of the price of a new wedge. As a result, I'd suggest anyone who thinks it might help to try one out. If it doesn't work as intended over a month or two, someone could sell it on and the entire experiment would cost only ~25 BPS or USD. That's my plan.

Gaz, I have the ping chipr. Within a couple of holes, I was dialed in. I'm currently a 27 handicap, and work 6 days a week. All my practice is with irons, putting, and woods. I just don't have time to practice bunkers and chipping. This Ping Chipr is a great way for me to focus on the other aspects of my game and improve those, while I can keep chipping very simple. Keep up the great work, Cheers!

I actually have the Ping and the Cleveland chippers. Different lofts and love them both. Recently added the Ping. Its a great deal of fun and works extremely well. I actually find it easier to direct than the Cleveland. Its a great club. During my last round I had hit a ball left of the hole with my tee shot. I had trees to get through and a rough down hill to the green. I took out the Ping and hit it perfectly onto the small down hill slope and it rolled gently onto the green. This was a par 3 and it helped me to save bogey. I have also noticed with a variety of shots thats its far easier for me to aim and direct it to the areas I want to go to. I think Ping has a winner with this club. The Ping has done very well in a variety of reviews as well.

@@garymartingolf Not sure where you live Gary I am in Connecticut. I think using a putting stroke with the Ping helps too. I think both the Ping and Cleveland Chippers are good.. The different lofts come in handy too. But again I find the Ping easier to direct. I really like the way it looks too. At times when I feel I might need more loft I can use the Cleveland. Kind of like carrying two wedges. Joe

I have the Ping ChipR when it first became available and like the extra weight of the club vs. the lighter 9 iron. In your video hitting to longer pin, he was pulling it to the left because of holding it more in the fingers rather than in the palm like a putter. The putter grip would put the golfer more over the target line rather than further away from it, i.e. 70 vs. 60 degree lie.

8:08 🤣Got him good 👏 I had a chipper years ago and it worked for a few but then it didn't, so just practised more with 9i for shorter chips, 8i for longer fringe chips, and 7i for 30 yards out with no trouble or thicker grass. Like we all experience, the swing/technique comes and goes. ATM my chipping has gone and i was thinking about a chipper once again! But I don't have room in the bag as I've started using my gap more now vs bump 'n runnin the ball up and onto the green from within 50-80 YRDS ⛳

Very interesting! The trick with the Ping ChipR is not to choke down on the grip. Its meant for a normal grip to be very putter-like, with the shorter shaft and the flatter lie angle. I am old - from the era of blades only and traditional lofts, where you had a PW and SW and that's it. In those days, we use ALL the irons for chipping, increasing loft as you were away from the green. This way, you have a lot of options.

I use the Cleveland C-Wedge instead. It has 42 degrees of loft instead of 38 - that is a huge difference when chipping. Because it is shorter, it goes almost exactly the same distance on a full shot as my gap wedge, so I took the gap wedge out of the bag. It is my straightest club and I hit it all the way up to 110 yards. One of the best clubs I have every owned. I think the 38 degree Ping wouldn't be as versatile. Try that one instead. And, BTW, I am a 3 handicap, so I think it is a great club for all handicap levels.

Please excuse my 2nd comment Gaz. P790 and bouncy face type of distance irons are not the best to chip with. Too hot. I noticed that your test subject using the Taylormades. Maybe if they are carrying these types of iron then a chipper is a good idea. But what club to leave out?! Probably lob wedge. If they can't chip in the first place what are the odds they got the skills to spin a 60 degree open.

I always avoided using a chipper since I always prefer to chip with an 6-8 Iron, which has a similar loft. But I purchased both the Cleveland Smart Sole Chipper and the PING ChipR after seeing videos from James Robinson and Mark Crossfield, two sources I trust. So, far, they have been COSTING me more strokes than they've saved. Because they are very upright, like a putter, it requires a VERY not chip-with-an-iron swing, which is a chipping swing that I am quite used to. Maybe it's me, but the swingweight of the ChipR seem very heavy as well, something I do not care for.
@garymartingolf
@garymartingolf Жыл бұрын
Good points Joe. If you had to chose only one, which would you play. When I tested the ping, I think it works best stood square on, weight 50/50, middle of the stance, shaft vertical. Like you said, not a conversation chipping setup.

When chipping with 8 or 9 iron, I choke down, move closer to the ball and set the club a bit more toe down allowing the shaft to be more vertical...like a putter...then I just use a putting stroke. So for me I don't see how this would really benefit. I can see how this would help those that have the yips and can't practice chipping much.

I'm curious if that club could be used as a training aid for people who struggle chipping. If someone used it exclusively for practice at the range, would the positions and movements needed for better chipping translate to the rest of their short clubs, or would they just become reliant on the chipper?
@nickjohns999
@nickjohns999 Жыл бұрын
As a 19 index senior my short game is the weakest part of my game, and resistant to coaching. My bag is full of clubs to make golf easier - hybrid irons, high loft fairways, sure out wedge and spider putter. I put the Ping ChipR in my bag three weeks ago and have played nine rounds since. It has saved me shots, I am ending nearer the hole. It plays anywhere from 90 yards and in where height is not a requirement. The weight balance and lie make it feel virtually impossible to miss hit. The only issue was which club to take out of the bag. Eventually I took out a high loft hybrid purely on having another that goes the same distance. I will not let ego dictate club choices over lower scores. Well worth the money for me. It is pointless pros and expert golfers talking about how they have other clubs already to do the job of the ChipR - of course they do, this club is not for them with their technique. This is a well thought out, balanced, great feeling, and confidence inspiring club for those that need it - you know who you are!

I've been using my hybrid for some select shots round the greens kind of chips for 15 years now using a putting stroke. I even go left hand low like my putting stroke. I think that more often than not that people who struggle with chipping have got poor technique and go for too much loft Gaz. It's so easy to chip with a 7 iron on an upslope. So no. Chipper would be a waste of space in my bag.

My 56 and my 50 are +1 lie angle. I use my 50 almost exclusively within 90 metres of the green (unless I need to go over or out of an obstical, or a can putt off the green). With the 50 I use a putter swing normal swing etc etc. I don't see the need of a chipper for me, everyone who has a chipper raves about it however.
@haznick

Obviously the lie angle is a lot more upright compared to a 9i. Couple that with the shorter shaft and its more like a heavy putter with a 9i loft on it.
@banditbaker1675

PING didn't design the ChipR for low handicap Golfers. It's been designed for weekend warriors who haemorrhage shots around the Green, By being more upright it allows the Golf to stand nearer to the Ball (as they would for a Putter) so that they can just make an easy rocking motion. As most weekend warriors don't need 14clubs in their Bags with lots of over-laps in yardage between Clubs, they have the opportunity to lose one of their redundant Clubs and replace it with a ChipR that is going to potentially save them 2-3 shots per Round.

Reminds me of all the golfers who are too lazy to learn to properly hit a 2-iron and instead go with hacker’s hybrids. (Said tongue in cheek). I felt like a cheating hacker when I first started using a hybrid and had that same feeling when I tried a chipper, even though I was confident in my chipping 90% of the time with an iron or wedge. But now, old enough to where it’s easier to swallow my ego, I carry a hybrid and a chipper and am confident 100% of the time using either club.
