I had the Ironheart Studio 15 and really liked it. The amp was 4 channels and could pull off most anything. The only reason I ended up trading it was that it was a rackmount, had it been an actual head unit I'd definitely still have it.

What a time to be alive, your are right! I remember inexpensive amps from the 80s and early 90s absolutely sounded like a can of bees. What you can get today for the price, particularly with digital modelling is absolutely incredible. Combine that with the increase in quality of ;budget' guitars thanks to CNC machines, and we are living in a great time indeed. You can for a few hundred dollars buy a guitar and rig that rivals what you could buy just 20 years ago for several thousand dollars. What a time indeed!

Bro - I have an early (hand wired) LC50 and totally agree, they sound really beautiful. Funnily enough I hated Laney up until I heard an LC30 and then I found the LC50 real cheap and now it's the only combo I play often with no pedals, just guitar straight in.

I’d say this is a great step forward for metal especially, because I know the “amp in a pedal” thing has been awhile, but I feel like there’s never been any good dedicated metal pedals (I could be wrong, I don’t know every pedal sized amp out there) but it sounds GREAT Also awesome to see you still getting better and better at playing. You may want to try the BluGuitar Amp-1 Iridium edition, it's made for metal and I quite like it. It is a bit pricey, but it has some nice options that the Ironheart doesn't seem to have (FX loop, in-built noise gate,...), slightly bigger format, but 100W of punch incase your drummer is a brute. I would definitely consider the Ironheart as an alternative though.

Couldn't tell them apart and it wasn't even a surprise. I remember back in the day I had this tiny 2 piece rig that consisted in a Pod XT bean and an Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum pedal format amp (the one that started it all). Plugged it in a Randall 4x12 loaded with celestions Seventy80 (great speakers if you use a digital rig in my opinion). I paid like 400€ for the whole rig, everyone laughed at me when I showed up with it, didn't last very long when I plugged it in. My brother even borrowed it for some gigs and recieved compliments from the best sound guy I ever met for his tone !

For those of us interested in cleans/ low-gain, I recently checked out the Quilter Superblock series - same price as this one and with great Vox, Fender & Plexi voicings. Between pedal amps and profilers, it seems we’ve finally reached tube amp obsolescence for all practical purposes. Sooner than I ever expected!🤯🎶
@Sylkis89
@Sylkis89 6 ай бұрын
What's interesting about Quilter is that their combos and dedicated cabs use Celestions BN12-300s which were originally designed as bass speakers but apparently work fantastic as guitar speakers as well, at least for clean tones on electric guitars and for electro-acoustic guitars and such. I'm researching these speakers and very tempted to buy them one day to replace stock speakers in my amp. When I contacted Celestion they said it would be safe to use them in an open cab 100W tube guitar combo even if I used bass cranked to the max, it would just sound weird for bass lacking low end due to the open cab but it would not break or anything, and with guitar that less-than-bass-cab-levels-of-low-end is actually a good thing I guess. I know Zilla cabs also like these speakers for players in unorthodox band setups like some doom bands where everyone plays Bass VI type baritones and therefore there's no separation between a guitar and a bass and so on. Barefaced also use them in their cabs. I wish Glen would also test these speakers in context of typical high gain metal in different types of guitar cabs (open vs closed, 2x12 vs 4x12, etc.). What I also find interesting about them is that they're apparently flatter, more even sounding than most guitar speakers, a lot of people use them jn cabs with tube power amps with digital modellers instead of using active FRFR. That of course can be seen as a bad thing, but consider this: you can add an EQ at the end of the chain in your effects loop and these speakers will respond to that way better than most other guitar speakers and you could be able to emulate different types of voicings that way maybe? Not entirely cause it would be before the poweramp stage but still I wish someone like Glen or Ola Englund or Kohle Kult would test this idea

The funny thing about this promotion was the end. The guitar sound of Glen's channel theme song sounded gobs and bounds better than any of the sounds in the demo (alll amps) so there's that. For sure, this seems like an incredible unit and I think and hope Laney do very well with it. Like its been said 1000xs already, these are happy days for young guitar players starting out and guys looking to make their gig lives easier. When you really think about it, should this be a surprise? With the current technology, all we're trying to do is create and recreate a distortion generator after all. I can't see this being rocket surgery and as the tech improves, so will the results and the varying formats distortion generators will be available in.

I have a million questions to pick your brain with, but I’ll just keep it simple for now. Have you done any videos on any of the DAW controllers, such as the Presonus Studio One, or the Icon Qcon Pro series? I feel like having a DAW controller would help me be a lot more efficient in my mixing, along with having something tangible to touch. Also, have you ever had viewers submit their setups/studios for critiquing/roasting? I feel like that would be very entertaining as well as very informative to those wanting to know if they’re heading in the right direction. Thank you for doing what you do, man!

I've been sayi9ng for the last 5 or 6 years, that digital/solid state has gotten to be as good as tubes, and despite 20+ years of playing professionally, my colleagues have laughed at me for thinking this. Your blind test are really proving how us "guitarist" listen with our eyes more than our ears. I can't tell a difference, and I know that no one in our audiences can either. I remember the first time I was watching a live band where the guitarist was using BiasFX on his Ipad as his rig. I like both for the situations they work really well in, but I feel really bad for people that can’t appreciate the pleasure of playing a tube amp in the same room as yourself. Some people need headphones, so they go to Walmart and buy the cheapest Bluetooth headphones they can’t, and get what they need. They’re happy. Others, having experienced something that changed their perspective, would accept no less than a wired connection with a tube preamp. It’s the story of the men in the cave, sometimes.

I don’t think there’s any reason to deny that tube amps in the room with you provide a more intimate sense of connection. Even my axe 3 doesn’t feel nearly as responsive. As for trying to pick them apart: I couldn't tell the difference overall. I heard a very slight change in Amp C, but not enough to sway me in any definite direction. In the mix, it was much more difficult to even hear that miniscule difference. It may have just been my auditory nerves playing tricks on me. Either way, the entire selection sounded very good, especially when put in a mix. Good use o the scientific method with the doubl blind tests. It's one of my pet peeves when individuals come in with presuppositions only to be shown evidence to the contrary and many of the same people will double down and/or move the goal posts. That's nothing short of intellectual dishonesty and I absolutely despise it. Great playing as well, Glenn. Hope you keep getting better at it. Cheers!

Admittedly I have a love affair with tube amps and love the way the feel at edge of break-up when in the room, but you are 100% right that in the context of the mix not a single person, be it a live show or a recording will be able to tell the difference. Hell most the time when tracking or playing live when wearing in ears the player can't tell the difference either. I'm talking about country and blues players in this context too, with metal and heavy distortion to claim a difference can be noticed is nothing but asinine.

Nice Kyuss shirt, Glenn! Your playing just got incredibly better from a week ago. WTF? Good work. My guess is that they're all the Laney SS.

Hey Glen, thanks for another great review. I’m curious on something. Can you do a video on pick-up adjustments? Not just on pickup height, but on changing the height of the poles (on pickups that allow you do to this?). I was planning on upgrading my pickups, but after seeing your video and Jim Lill’s video - I’m wondering if all I need to do is play around with the poles to get my cheap Ibanez INF1 and INF2 pickups to sound like any other humbuckers?

Mr F, great playing mate. As someone who started playing guitar nearly 4 decades back, we’re living in a truly unique time with the quality of gear that is available now. The Laney sounded huge. Its versatility for recording and as a live tool is appealing.

I had a Laney back in the late 80s and it was loud as hell. It was an AOR 50 watt all tube head and I ran it through a Crate Blue Voodoo 4x12 cabinet. It put my buddy's 100w Marshall to shame. The fact that Laney was able to build a pedal sized amp that shreds like that does not surprise me at all because they have always been primo metal amps. Laney and Randall were probably the best underrated and undiscovered metal amps. I have owned and played both brands in metal cover bands and the funny thing is that all my buddies were like bro you need a Marshall. Then when I plugged in and hooked up my pedal board they were blown away by how sick my setup was. With the tech advancements and being able to capture amp tones digitally I'm sure Laney has played with some wizardry of their own to get such epic results pron this pedal amp.

Ok, so my GUESS is that the Laney kicks in at 10:03 when that riff repeats... but sheesh, it's difficult to hear any real difference between all 3 of them!! That is honestly the only time I THINK there is an amp change that I might be able to hear due to a slight increase in brightness but heck, it could just be that someone hit a note a touch harder or something, lol??? And yeah, your playing is getting better every vid Glenn - well done for the obvious hard work, your sound is really getting some feel and relaxation to it. Thanks for another excellent vid and intro to some dang fine gear.

Christ Glenn, I really struggled just to hear changes this time. And that bass is so crushing, its distracting haha. Killer man \m/. Alright, here we go....... 9:57-10:04 - Im gonna guess this is the Laney. Just a stab, really I have no idea. 10:04-10:12 - Tube 10:12-10:19 - Tube 10:19-10:26 - Tube 10:26-10:31 - Tube 10:31-10:35 - Tube "changes" Id define as SLIGHT changes in Treble or Presence. The whole thing sounded slammin', to me..... This one gets you TWO FU's....haha. Like I said, I struggled with this one, even through my "super system"......Rock on dude. \m/

I'm very happy with the tones I'm getting out of an inexpensive Valeton GP-200. So much so that I bought a power amp pedal and run it into my Hesu Demon equipped cab. Sold my other amp. I'm done, I will NEVER buy another tube amp. I even took it to practice last night (where I play bass. Yes, Bass.) and it did fine. Plugged it into my bass amp's effects loop and it kept pace with everyone just fine. Got some fun tones out of it, too.

The best (and simplest) setup so far I use currently for recording is a DIY Stompbox clone from a rectifier preamp (JFETs instead of tubes) fittet with a 5150 tonestack. Cost me about 60€ + building time. It goes into a simple IR loader. Done. The only reason I don't use it for my main band (live) is because we want to use midi for amp changes.

This is what I've been looking for so many years, I play small local gigs and it's annoying to get a guitar amp, I got my hands into a QC and I love it but this would've been the greatest tool either for a beginner or a seasoned player that just get's to play. Thanks for showcasing it GLENNN!!!!!

I think the pedal comes in at 10:13 or 10:14 , gets switched away to the tube at 10:21 and comes back in at 10:27 or 10:28. it switched to a tube at 10:37 switched again at 10:42 (maybe a different tube) and I don't think I heard the pedal again until the very end at like 10:54. The song was awesome and I am 100% totally guessing while listening to that section over and over again. I THINK i hear switches and I THINK some are the pedal, but they all just sound so damn good anyway. Thanks for the opportunity to snag one, Glenn.

Very hard to pick out what amp is what in the mix once again and thankyou great job with the testing. I feel like at this point its not even about hearing the difference between amps, id go as far to say its more about how the amp feels and responds. Hearing the differences is one thing in a mix, but if I were told to PLAY each amp in the mix I feel like the differences would be maybe a bit easier to find. Thankyou once again Glen!

9:58 to 10:03 is the first change then back over at 10:14 and again at 10:22 and again at 10:29 and again at 10:45 and once more at 10:54 at least thats what i think. Its hard to tell in a full mix.

I know your using all things in a studio setting. That's cool and very usable. When you throw in a loud drummer and have to start turning up to hear yourself, that's when those tube amps will start to show the difference. Solid state just craps out at high volume. Tubes just push the speaker harder without puking on itself. This thing sounds crazy good though.
This $325 Tube Amp will RIVAL a SOLDANO: Here's the PROOF!
