Transformers fans are raving over the kick ass comic reboot from Skybound and Daniel Warren Johnson. Unfortunately, this week Johnson announced he's no longer illustrating Transformers starting at issue 7. But will remain the writer moving forward, rumors indicate until issue 12. If only we could see this level of quality on the Big Two's roster of books. I'm not a big fan of DWJ's art myself, but I do enjoy his writing and at least his art is distinctive and kinetic.

Daniel Warren Johnson’s story has been pretty good so far. I met him at NYCC and he seems pretty nice. He has mentioned several times that he’s a big fan of wrestling. I think you can tell. lol I hope the story stays good after he leaves but we’ll see. As for the art? I was on the fence on the art to begin with since I didn’t like how the people looked. But as long as the robots look cool I’m happy.

DWJ did a series called Extremity that lasted twelve issues. But it's really hard to be a writer/artist. DWJ writing is enough to keep me on board for the time being

These books have been grand slams! Duke was a big surprise as I'm not a big fan of Williams' writing. It makes me think this is where he belongs instead of superhero stuff. I'm pretty happy with all of this. I hope you, Wes, talking these books up, gets them wider exposure. Keep up the good work.

Ideally, I'd love to see DWJ stick around for at LEAST 25 issues writing. BUT Dan has mostly done mini series going anywhere from 4 to 8 issues. Extremity was his 12 issue book that he wrote and drew. I was quite surprised to see he was even sticking around after 6 issues since that is not usually what he does. It's a miracle we are getting a year out of him even if it is just writing. Whoever follows Dan at issue 13 has a tall order to follow unless they can lock him down for another year.

@@InfamyOrDeath-__- The series will likely go on same continuity and all just with a different writer. To be fair, that is how DWJ does his writing. The same way Mark Millar has. Great writers who historically do mini series. Here's hoping whoever replaces Dan after issue 12 is someone who not only continues Dan's story but does it for at LEAST 2 years.

I hope that DWJ stays on. If comes to it, I would hope that Kirkman would allow Transformers to take a small break (like Void Rivals) rather than replace DWJ. Still though if DWJ wants to leave of his own volition, I definitely think there are other writer’s out there who can keep the momentum going.

DWJ set an incredibly high bar on Transformers. I'm willing to give Corona a chance but I'm not super impressed by what I've seen so far. I'd much rather see James Harren or Juan Gedeon take over art chores. More than anything I hope Johnson returns at some point.

I've heard nothing but good things about this book. I now wish I picked up the individual comics instead of waiting for trade. IDW had some beautiful artwork but the stories. . . it was really hard to pick up comic and jump in. Dreamwave was gorgorous art. But the artwork is good and the story sounds better so I'm good.

He is the most consistent on putting out good to great comics which in my opinion makes him the best writer in comics right now and the next best is Kirkman everyone else is hit or miss at best or just horrible at least in the last 3 years

The big draw (no pun intended) for me was the writing, not a fan of the art. So this is fine with me. I'd still prefer something less cartoony and more detailed artwise. Someone like Don Figueroa, Andy Wildman or Geoff Senior from previous runs. But as long as the writing is this good, I'm here for it. As for your comment about people who don't like DWJ's art not being art connoisseurs - you're entitled to your opinion Wes, but it just ain't my thing. Doesn't mean I think it's unpublishable, it just ain't for me or something I'd pay for if the writing wasn't so good. I certainly recognise he understands how to tell a story in a clear and visually exciting way.

With the success of Transformers, I cannot see DWJ wanting to give that up. He needs to, at least, complete 12-issues. After seeing this Transformers series, I cannot imagine any other artist holding my interest. We’ll see.

This is the main reason I just loved manga immediately and dumped comics, it’s the short stories in comics, I’ve no interest whatsoever anymore. Reading manga and having characters and villains just mentioned a few times and built up over 25 volumes, which page wise would be like 200 American comics. Long form storytelling just can’t be beat, I’ve no idea how people are happy reading 6 issue stories anymore.

They should have gotten Nick Roche. Last Stand of the Wreckers is the best Transformers comic story out prior to the Energon Universe. Roche's style is cartoony, but he is fantastic with violence and dark imagery. He's a great fit for DWJ, and would be a great follow-up when DWJ steps down.

Great video. I'm slightly worried how the story will be once he leaves but the whole Energon Universe so far is some of the best comics i have read in years. Duke #1 was beyond awesome and im eagerly waiting for Cobra Commander. The 4 issues of Transformers and Void Rivals were top notch as well. The whole connected universe has the potential to have years of great stories and is singlehandedly the reason i started back reading comics again

Ideally, I'd love for DJW to stay on the book as a writer and stick around until issue 25. I don't mind the artist change. I went into this series knowing that DJW wasn't going to be drawing every single issue. If it's true that he is leaving after issue 12 than whoever takes over are gonna need to make a big first impression. As fir whk I'd want to take over, I think Ryan Parrott would be a great choice. I live his work on Power Rangers and even though Rogue Sun has started to drag a bit it's still a great series.

Johnson won’t be leaving after issue 12 at least as artist, we know given they’ve started issue 7 at least that issue 5,6 are complete art wise Yet DWJ has still been drawing pages on his livestreams Not sure how long he will be doing it after issue 12, but he will at least for little longer

Transformers will take a hit without Johnsons art . I do still think the story will be good but once he leaves the sales mite drop and I am worried who they pick. His art is one of the best in the industry. He will be missed and hope the new team continues momentum.

Well what a surprise another modern day creator who can't do more then 7 or 12 issues on a series. Huh...is there something in the water out there that does this? How did we go from talented creators being able to work 2, 3, 4 years on a title and coming up with new stories all the time, to guys who can't come up with stories that can make a year? Especially on something that is quite successful. It just blows my mind. I'd almost say having too many choices in regards to getting work is the culprit in all this nowadays. Anyway, they better get some very high quality people on the title, cause this thing could go south very fast with the wrong ones. And Kirkman is NOT the guy to come on board with this. If you look at it dispassionately he has really only had 2 success stories. Walking Dead and Invincible. Every other title he has done either meets mediocre sales or dies a horrible death. Although I can't knock his success and what Skybound was able to do with Transformers and GI Joe. Something that only going back to Marvel (which should have happened based on all the licensed properties they have taken on in the last 5 years) could have equaled or surpassed. Hey here is a good question too...does Skybound have the reprint rights on the Marvel Transformers and GI Joe? If they do they need to get those trades out ASAP as IDW had MANY gaps in the trade reprints of Marvel's GI Joe. WTF20.

Jorge Coronos seems to have a good style. The important is keep the same artists for at least 6 issues arc, without changing in the middle. But also important the writer be consistent. Transformers universe lore is always what keep people hooked.

I LOVED the IDW up until a specific point (after the war ended the writing went majorly down hill and they started shoving modern politics into the series). I have the first four issues, I haven’t been disappointed and I’d like more.

Corona art chased away people. I hope it's a LOT better than Bat girls. It was horrendous. It couldn't be followed. Art has to tell a story without word balloons. I fear for Transformers sales with his art.

I really dont like the art change, its one of the things I always hated the most the industry has done for decades. For now it hasnt been a breaking point, but in the past I stopped buying a run just because the art style changed to much, the art style what sets the mood , and is the thing that decides if you step in or not. I rather they stop doing these things or keep it to an absolute minimum if they cant help themselves, cause often it really feels like your being ripped off by downgrading something that started good. Like most I also hope they will continue to deliver proper comics compared to all the trash of recent years, but despite the for now good run I still dont trust Image, there to many hits and misses over there i current times. Nor would it the first time that through a clever "bait & switch" campaign they misleaded & dissapointed. Plus there are still to many people working over there who shouldnt....Image still has along way to go recapture that trust.
