There's a term used in old-fashioned pro-wrestling promotion: Hotshotting If you needed a bump if revenue, you could run a "hotshot", which was to do something much more extreme than normal. Sometimes you do a big match and title change immediately instead of building up. Sometimes you use extreme violence or sensationalism. This usually worked now, but it would always work less the next time and less the time after that. Even more, your normal promotions would seem weak since they weren't as big as the sensational stuff. You took the short term gain, but in the long term you lost something it would take years to get back, if ever. Marvel only knows how to Hotshot, even when they don't need to.

Those writers tend to hate what super hero comics are about, who they generally appeal to, and the characters within them. Add to it the writers are often frustrated, failed scriptwriters who despise the fact they had to turn to comics, which they see as beneath them, only fuels their hatred for it all. I know it’s a silly First World problem (although, that’s ironic, since America is looking more and more like a Third World country), but I stopped reading new comics in 2011. I recently dipped my toes back in, on your recommendation, with Rook: Exodus and the Energon Universe. It’s been nice to have some floppies in my hands again. Aside from that, I still buy overpriced omnibuses (omnibuses(?)…omnibi(?)) But that’s about it. Everybody has a different breaking point, and mine may be stupider than others. When DC re-numbered Detective Comics and Action Comics it actually made me angry. I was like, screw it. I hadn’t been happy with the quality of the books in s while, anyway, but I said, “if the companies don’t care about the legacy and publishing history of these books, why should I?” Look at the publication history of Amazing Spider-man sometime. It’s fine up until JMS. I could forgive that. One mistake for fifty something issues. Then the numbering reverted back. But Axel F’ing Alonso comes along, and holy shit… What’s it up to? Six or seven volumes? And then, they did that weird shit with the decimal point issues… Issue # 13.1, 13.2, 13.3… It’s all a joke to these scumbags. The entire companies-DC AND Marvel-need to be shut down. Fire everyone. Start new companies, with new management and new creators. And two fresh new universes. The idea of salvaging Marvel 616 is absurd. There have now been more bad stories told in the 616 universe than good. They’ve published as many books in the last decade as they published in the first 40 years of Marvel. You’d think after throwing that much shit at the wall we’d have some great stories to show for it? I mean, even if you only got one great story for every twenty misses, you would still have dozens of epic stories to collect into TPB editions and fill the shelves at Barnes & Noble… Right? There’s almost nothing after all this time. Especially, at Marvel.

I'm not really going to miss this run of Captain Marvel, Alyssa Wong basically made the comic about this new Yuna Yang character that she failed to make interesting (kind of a Black Cat wannabe) with Carol becoming a side character in her own book. But the Doctor Strange book was entertaining and engaging, whether Strange, Clea or even Wong got the focus.

Only thing by Alyssa Wong I own is the first Arc of her Deadpool run, and that was literally only because He's up against Doc Ock Now, that doesn't mean I'm happy that They completely disregarded Superior Spider-Man 2.0 and have literally gone around in circles since Dead No More, It's like a bad fucking joke Novel idea: give Octavius cancer As a result of failing health due to his career as a super villain and getting this shit kicked out of him by Spidey and a ton of other Heroes and even villains. Have him do a series of final schemes including using a satellite Network to create the world's ultimate heatwave and weaponize global warming only for The Avengers and X-Men and Fantastic Four and all other Heroes across the world to stop him and lock him up. Turns out this was all a ruse to keep everyone distracted while he initiates his true final contingency, being to swap souls with Peter using an octobot and let pet Peter die in his withering body. When dying wish and Superior Spider-Man came out, it was a legitimately intriguing idea, they hadn't done that yet, even though I'm sure a certain few other Heroes and villains had had a similar plot But they've done it three times over. It's lost any of the poignancy or iconic ness that the original story had Of course, I didn't know back then when I first discovered it, but Peter wasn't dead forever. And that was obvious, but the whole point of the story was rather than just stealing Peter's life and tarnishing his legacy deliberately, he learned humility and the error of his ways. And when Peter did die, Octavius Had a change of heart and vow to earnestly continue being Spider-Man in his stead. Now him struggling with it and being a lot more ruthless and arrogant in his approach? That was the whole point. It's Doc Ock trying to be Spider-Man and not knowing how to because he'd always been so selfish. Had to hand Peter's ghost back control of his own body at the expense of erasing his consciousness and memories. The whole impact and effect of the story was supposed to be that Yeah, Dr. Octopus, as far as the Prime dimension was concerned, is dead and gone forever. And then they just had to bring him back, had to Make some bullshit excuse as to why he'd forgotten all those lessons by saying it was a "backup copy" of his soul, hijacks equally convoluted disgraceful resurrected Ben Reilly's pseudo altruistic clone Resurrection plan by stealing a new body, And do a repeat of superior Spider-Man, this time as a separate entity from Peter, because we just have to keep on pushing that Spider-Verse envelope That turned into a tangent, and I'm sorry, but literally, I only bought Alyssa Wong's Deadpool to see him and Ock fight

My first response to hearing Captain Marvel had been canceled was to laugh since Marvel has been promoting her as the end all, be all, greatest character of all time, but it is a shame for fans who wanted an ongoing series that they hoped would bring good stories. As a fan it really is wearisome to deal with all this, and to have to figure out what series a certain comic is from. All I can do is sigh when I see Captain America is now on his eleventh series because they keep hiring bad writers and then having to restart due to the writing being so bad. The recent Thunderbolts series (the one that had a cover that all but screamed, “This is to promote the movie!”) is number five. That’s not bad in and of itself, but the reason it’s the fifth series and not the fourth is Marvel came out with a five-issue Thunderbolts series the year before. To my knowledge, that series didn’t accomplish anything and sunk without a bubble. I think it was promoted as tying up loose ends from Devil’s Reign, but I think that was dropped very early on, so I really don’t know what the purpose of it was.

I did have a positive reaction to the end of Dr. Strange, "Yea, one less book to buy!" But the solicitations did suggest that it was going to be a potential final issue. And it was a great solid 18-issue run - it was my favorite (current) Marvel book right now. (Spectacular Spider-Men is now in the position - a fun read.) However, this was the third series by MacKay, starting with The Death of Doctor Strange, which he remarks in the letter's page as being the culmination of a 33 issus. This will be the perfect size for a modern Omnibus - one I'd be willing to get. That said, the Bloodhunt event really ticked me off. I got the red band edition only to find out the extra gruesome cut-in-twain scene wasn't "canon" related to the regular book. And it seemed like every important Dr. Strange scene in Bloodhunt, was shown from a different POV in the main book. I gave my red band BH #1 back to my LCS (Cosmic Comix in MD), I was so disgusted by the bait and switch. [I was mad a Marvel, not them.] So, I didn't follow the rest of the series. One, because I didn't want to buy #1 again in the tame version. And two, MacKay seems to write better for solo characters than groups. (It wasn't as good - what do I care about these other Marvel characters - this isn't the pre-JMS ASM era!) Only to find out in #18 that the Doom "exchange" occurred in BH #5, where we get a minor multi-panel flashback!!! I loved the Death mini, bailed on the Strange (Clea) book, but picked up the latest series. It's hard maintain numbering when the creatives, especially the art changes so dramatically. DC can get away with it more, because they embrace their legacy numbering. Who doesn't remember the thrill of Simonson's Thor, DD's Born Again, and the Gray/Professor Hulk just organically happening in the regular title. But I was buying lots of Marvel's then and they were affordable (and great)! Comics are just too dang expensive these days. Kudos to Skybound for at least publishing $4 books. (I wanted to follow the new Geoff Johns titles, but the rollout of their new "universe" and the number of upcoming titles scared me away.) I'm a huge Spider-Girl fan and was one of the many fans working hard writing letters and appeals to support the book. I've got several pieces of Spider-Girl original artwork too (along with two letters printed.). She's a fantastic character and met a need when the regular ASM book was flounding for me, seeming to have been superseded by Ultimate Spider-Man. I'm glad Marvel is publishing her issues in Epic form now, and your viewers should really check her out. Having quality stories and talent on her book didn't ever giver her smooth sailing though. What I mean is that quality talent enough isn't going to sell books, especially in this market. But it's better than poor talent! Marvel has long since abandoned me for being a completist with their constant reboots and soft/hard retcons. These aren't the same characters that I grew up with anymore. So, I try to read just what I like for as long as I like. But I desperately want to follow a good, long run of a book (hopefully with a consistent team behind it). They just don't do that anymore - it may not even be possible. I definitely agree with some of your statements, but in Brevoot's defence, keeping the lights on is the number one priority from a business standpoint. They just need to make sure they do it to the best of their ability and with integrity. Don't bother putting out a book with a sub-par team/story just to drain our money based on a love for a character we follow. (I'm looking at you Daredevil. Although, the JRJR covers are nice , especially since Matt's clean shaven.) Lower the price on your titles, put out better content, rather than flooding the market with too much. Etc. Anyway, good topic today.

11:00 I think the cancellation is just to stop stretching Mackay thin especially as he’s doing Avengers, X-men and whatever event is coming next which is probably about Doom since he has been building to Doom being a sorcerer supreme since Strange 1 (Clea’s run)

Ridiculous Blood Hunt. Millions upon millions either turned or a vampire meal, and they are all day walkers now which means neither humanity or mutants are apex. They upended the status quo of the planet and no heroes seem particularly in tune with that. Maybe Supreme Doom (hasn't there already been a couple of those?) will have it out with Dracula and revert vampires rather than kill them off with the formula. Plus Khonshu is still free and rather ticked off. Some of the individual issues of Blood Hunt were interesting, like Union Jack, but it tied up in a rushed feeling manner and left horrible hanging plot threads. As for Doc Strange, I didn't like that last series. I didn't like the floofy coloring or the delicate lines or the Clea pandering. Clea wasn't new to our dimension, she would have understood to temper her normal reactions out of respect for Strange if nothing else. Blech! Hopefully any new Doc Strange writers will understand the assignment. Magic, horror, weirdness, and Doctor Strange starring in his own book.

I cant imagine putting a self insert into a fan favorite character's book. I always think, I'm old, I dont look as good, life is too short for self indulgent vanity. But Alyssa Wong's narcissismn is amazing in a counter-profit way lol

Totally agreed on rebooting a series with the same writer, but on the other side of that coin is this. I really would like Batman & Robin to be rebooted to a #1 issue. I really disliked Joshua Williamson's run, I had to stop after 5 issues and really don't like Phillip Kennedy Johnson being saddled with that. So now if I do want to read P.K.J.'s run (which sounds like it might be pretty dang good) I'll have a 8 issue gap in my collection with absolutely no desire to complete it or I will sell the 1st 5 issues and have my series start at #14. I might just skip it because I generally don't like having an incomplete series. This is a pretty tough decision that would have been an easy, definite buy for me if it was a new #1.

Damn, that was the art in the last Captain Marvel comic?! That looked like someone learned to draw reading an old Chris Heart How to Draw book! There is no detail or volume in any of those panels! It's "meh, Good 'nuff" art! It's fuckin' criminal! Uninspiring! People wanna save comic books? Big part of it is to learn to draw better than that!

And the comic shops make up the revenue how?
@incubustimelord59472 ай бұрын
They should cancel 98% of all of their on-going monthly comic book series. 75% should only focus on Spider-Man, Wolverine, the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four. The rest of the company should just put the remaining 25% of the comics as only secondary characters that are special guest appearances. The 2% of titles dedicated to useless background characters don't even need to be published at all.

Unpopular opinion: I enjoy reboots. However, that comes with a MASSIVE CAVEAT. I enjoy the reboots of characters like my favorite Silver Surfer, because quite frankly, Cosmic level characters like him can be hard to right for on a regular basis and make the stories have any meaning and impact. Silver Surfer Black is a perfect example of how amazing a story can be when it's limited to a short run. And yes, I guess that technically Black was a limited series despite not being labeled as such (like they used to back in the day anyway). But then we move on to books like Immortal Hulk. It ends at 50, but from what I understand, it told its story then moved on to another arc. I've only just gotten started with the series, but so far it's been great. I don't mind that it will end. It's nice to have finality. Of course, on the flip side of that is the canceling of issues before they even reach a year if they aren't limted series. This is actually a big part of why I just stopped bothering to hunt down a decent comics shop, and just pick up highly recommended stories like Immortal Hulk once they get collected versions. This way I don't even have to bother with shortened runs and unresolved plots. I do the same with new television as well. I've gotten invested far too often into shows that I enjoy that get canceleled a week after release. No thanks. So yeah, the tl;dr is that rebooting CAN make a lot of sense. But clearly Marvel is just using this Co stant churn for short-term profit as mentioned in the video.

You are aware it says "Wonged" in the thumbnail, yes?🤣
@incubustimelord59472 ай бұрын
It's a double meaning. Wong as in Alyssa Wong and "wonged" because Alyssa Wong has wronged so much in the "mainstream" American comic book industry. So if you're reading a comic book and you see that the writer is Alyssa Wong, you already know that the comic book super-hero characters in the story have all already been shat on.

Sadly, the identity politics have gotten so rigid and destructive that it has gotten to the point that when I see a female writer on a female character, I’m going to assume the writer was chosen for a reason unrelated to their talent, and pass on that book.

A Doctor Doom, Sorcerer Supreme book vs a Dr Strange, Master of Mystic Arts title. Things like this would an interesting storyline but it is a dropped idea. Maybe, Strange Tales will return with the two doctors but I have no faith in a good idea being used.
