The clearest teaching I have heard concerning the different pronunciation between can and can't.

This is an amazing lesson - great way of explaining this very misunderstood pronunciation point. Love it - The video is really going to help me me explain it better to a student!

I've watched five consecutive videos on the pronunciation of "can" and "can't." Only two, including yours, gave helpful information. The other three said in effect that "can" is always pronounced, "kin," and that "can't" is pronounced, "can." I've taught English in Taiwan for twenty-six years, and it's next to impossible to unteach something that has been taught wrong. Of the five videos, your explanation is far superior to the others; though the Korean lady in the other useful video spoke more standard English. I'll recommend both your video and hers to my students and to others. Thanks. Thumbs up.

this is totally helpful. I always need to repeat "can" or "can't" and sometime there are misunderstanding when people ask help and I say "I can" but they understood as "I can't". ^_^

Although when it comes to "can" at the end of a sentence it seems like it's pronounced like "kin" then too. Not "kæn", like you say in the video.
@Asidders11 жыл бұрын
Oh, not that it's de-stressed, but that it's pronounced with the same type vowel as used in the examples. Obama's "Yes we can" for instance, sounds to me like "Yes, we keæn" rather than a pure æ sound. :)

***** I care about intermediate writing skill. At present, I can read and understand english documents well (I think so). But I dont know way to writing a composition topic. Besides, my listening skill is very bad. May you advice for me, plz? Thanks so much.
@elementalenglish10 жыл бұрын
I just posted a new listening video :) Watch the first time with the subtitles. Take notes and notice how I change my pronunciation. Listen a second (or 3rd) time, but cover the subtitles. Do you understand more? There are questions to test your comprehension as well. As for writing…. so do you want to know more about writing an essay in school? Is that what you mean by a "composition topic"?
@yuanpeng795210 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks! I will try it. Best regards.

TBH, You said too clearly. but in the field they don't say like that. very confusing and the same. I mean, I can hear t sound on your video but I can't hear t sound normally, when it comes to can't.
@elementalenglish8 жыл бұрын
+TING CHOE It's true that when I speak in my lessons, I can sound more clear than speakers in real life. But I do that intentionally so that students can learn the rule. It's sometimes optimal to learn and practice a troublesome rule in a more controlled environment before practicing it at a native level. With that said, I also think you make a really good point! Practice and learning should be done with natural speech.

This doesn't apply to proper (British) English.
@kristaanderson55337 жыл бұрын
British Received Pronunciation isn't the only "proper" English, just as Portuguese and Spanish spoken in Latin American are in no way "improper".
