All joking aside ! There used to be a pair of white shark jaws in the Redcar lifeboat museum, it was washed ashore on the beach in the 1950s. Also there is an old postcard of Whitby showing a great white being pulled up the side of the fish quay. Lastly there is a photo of one on show on the beach at Whitley bay for a penny per person. It is called a grampus which some people have mistakenly identified as a killer whale but not with the huge gill slits apparent on the picture. But those were in the days when huge tuna were caught off Scarborough.

These would be cool photos to see. The run of tuna increases the possibility of a Med based GW showing up, but, the rapid changing water temps are what is likely keeping them away. Our waters aren't too cold, just lack consistency of water temp.

Maybe not so much a spoof as we think. Great Whites are confirmed in the Mediterranean (and have been confirmed responsible for a number of attacks in the area. Also, Irish fishermen have made a number of large sharks taking seals all around the southern coast of Ireland. Given the current global rise in sea temperature a confirmed Great White sighting or capture would come as no surprise.

@@NathanielTavington They’ve been seen & caught on colder shores. Alaska for one.
@NathanielTavington2 жыл бұрын
@@Lth56 Alaska is colder than England on land but not in the water. Regular Summer currents bring Whities into Alaskan waters for brief periods of time but they follow the warm water right back out again as soon as the temperature starts to drop. Like what I said about rogue warm currents. According to current knowledge on great whites, the ambient temperatures around England are too cold to sustain them, but if a warm current comes in close enough (which is possible especially with climate change), they'll follow it. It happens off the US East Coast every few years, a current comes up from Florida and Great Whites will follow it into areas normally too cold for them. They'll stay until the temperature drops and then go right back out again. It's what caused the true story that actually inspired Jaws.
@Lth562 жыл бұрын
@@NathanielTavington Ah. I didn’t know about the sea temps on Alaska to be honest. Thanks for that. I’ve normally gone by the theory that Great Whites are found more where there is a heavy seal population. Would be great to see one here though, as long as it’s respected & not slaughtered.

Hi John. Great video as always👍🏻. We know you are a superb angler. Take on the only challenge that you can’t walk🧐. In the next ten years, someone will catch a Great White in UK waters. It will probably be in Cornwall too. Why not you? If you can catch Tuna, you can catch a White Shark. In fact, White Sharks eat Tuna, so fish in the exact spot you caught them. Check out “Deep Blue”. It’s a 20 foot female White shark estimated to be 4,400 lbs. One day a shark will be bitten in half when your reeling it in. That’s when you know you are close🤣☝🏻. I have seen huge basking sharks and very odd shaped "basking" sharks many times before. I have even seen a 9ft shark, defo not a basking, in Chichesterharbour area leading out to Langstone. @@TheMilford99 we have one the largest seal populations in the whole of europe 40% of the world population of grey seals reside on our coasts and there are tuna (not in great numbers) in our waters, John has even caught them and has videos of them on the fishlocker channel!

Excellent entertainment 👌 not only did I lose track of just how many times you said ' great white ' what a fantastic haul of apparent by catch of blue's! Fun to see you playing a shark with one arm and handing the rod to your partner and him having to hold on for dear life with both hands to try to control it 😀, mind you, you do have some serious biceps 💪. Always a pleasure to watch and informative at the same time. Cheers. 👍

I read in an old Guiness Book of Records that the most northerly caught GW was off the coast of Iceland. I think they're in our waters but probably off the west coast of Ireland and Scotland,not the English Channel or North Sea. That Book is currently residing in my loft.I need to dig it out so I can quote the year page n ISBN number,as there is alot of Internet talk about GW in our water at the moment.

Great Video 👌 I remember holidays in Looe probably late 70s early 80s and waiting for the shark boats to come in around teatime. They used to come in with the sharks hanging from the back of the boats. We used to walk around the indoor fish market on the quayside and I was absolutely fascinated by all the weird and wonderful types of fish and the massive size of some. Amazing memories ❤️ 👍

Another great video. One of the reasons Great Whites may avoid hunting around our shores is Orcas. The great whites of False Bay in South Africa have deserted the place now that a pod of orcas has taken up residence. They have all reappeared around Cape Cod! Orcas love eating shark livers and great whites seem to be on the menu. We have two resident orca populations. It's still only a theory but a good one.

That is a good theory. Although to my knowledge we don’t have any resident Orcas. 👍🏻

@@TheFishLocker According to the Wildlife Trust we have 1 resident population consisting of 8 Individuals ( I think that number is growing) that range widely around the UK (I saw them once in the Sound of Mull) and a visiting seasonal population that spend most of their time hunting seals around the Shetlands and Orkneys.
