A cracking watch as usual John, so many talking points!! Tips & hints galore all the way through which we have all became accustom to, watching your vids, I'm no stranger to wreck fishing but I have a skipper's guidance to assist me, the fact that you're doing this solo makes it all the more creditable. The part of the country that you're fishing makes me envious to say the least, no wonder you relocated from the North East, that's the accent I'm detecting!! Although I can hear a West country twang entering your dialogue occasionally!! If you are a sea angler in the UK does it get much better than Cornwall? As you've shown the fishing ain't too shoddy but the fact that you share the environment with Minke Whales, Dolphins & Tuna really showcases the South West in general to anybody not already acquainted with it's natural beauty. As I said so much to talk about but one last thing, how close do these other boats want to get to you? How annoying when they've got the entire ocean to fish!! Solid stuff John, just what I need on a Saturday morning!! All the best pal.
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
Shore Fishing Essex - Thankyou very much Paul, we had some issues getting the video up on the usual Friday evening but hopefully it makes for a good Saturday watch. I absolutely love this part of the country, it’s no accident that we live here and it’s not hard to see why. I have some ideas for new videos in the coming months that should further highlight how exceptional the SW can me. 😉 As for the boats. It is very frustrating at times, both for the lack of courtesy but also the unnecessary dangers. It’s a big ocean. 🤷🏻♂️ You will see it happens a lot as I’ve started leaving it in the videos to highlight the point. Tides on Monday/Tuesday are below CD so I might have a scavenge. 😉👍🏻🐚🦞🦀
@shorefishingessex5 жыл бұрын
Would love to have made it down to you for those tides John but I'm working on Monday & it's my son's birthday on Tuesday!! I'm having a nightmare lately trying to find time to make my latest video, it's all in place & ready to go, as you say the tides over the next few days are the best set of lows until the spring lows next year, it was pitch black at low tide this morning in Essex, this evening would have been an option but I'm invited to a party which I can't get out of, tomorrow morning I might be hungover so that leaves Sunday evening witch will be pitch black again, life just keeps getting in the way!!

Sorry to say this but ever since I lot my mate's dad's best reel in Llyn Ogwen, Snowdonia, 51 years ago during my first (and last) attempt at trout fishing, I have had less than zero interest in fishing but your channel is one of those I go to everyday just for the calm, relaxing element of watching. The sounds of seabirds in the background and the lapping of the water against your boat probably help and take me back to family holidays in Mevagissey in the early 60s. Great channel, love it.

@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Rowe - Hi Malcolm, the lifejacket is something that I think came about as a change of mindset. I never used to wear one growing up. Or the times fishing as a kid. When I definitely should have. Now I wear one probably 80% of the time. Some sessions and scenarios I don’t feel they are totally necessary but when being in the public eye and a possible role model for kids I think it’s very important. Ling do like the deeper water, and snaggy ground or wrecks. 👍🏻🎣🐟😉

Ling are a fun fish to catch. In BC I thought I had hooked onto the bottom of a rocky area. So we're moving the boat around to do what we do when we're snagged and I start to wind thinking o maybe it was a sea cucumber or an anemone or something. Glance down as it was closer to the surface and I see this huge Ling on my line. It broke off before I could hand it in the boat.

I saw a video on YT a while ago about guys fishing for cod in deep water in either Iceland or Norway. What they did to stop the swim bladder from blowing was allowing the fish to rest in about 20-30 foot of water before landing it. You could see the fish releasing the air from the swim bladder then they brought the fish to the surface. All the fish were returned and swam back to the depths seemingly unharmed. Don't know if this would work with Ling but it might be worth a try.
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
dougsmcv - This does work with some species. Ling are very susceptible to “blowing” though. I have even known it for someone to lose a fish half way up and moments later for it to float to the surface anyway. Also, whilst eel fishing like I was. If you hold them half way like you are describing they can often throw the hook or tangle themselves up terribly. 🤷🏻♂️ As they are a good eating fish I do not see such a problem. But you are right, with some species holding them half way up helps them to depressurise 😊👍🏻🎣🐟

Agree with all the comments, great fishing and a great watch as usual. In regards to the swim bladders blowing have you ever tried just holding the fish half way up for about 30 seconds? Gives the Ling the time it needs to adjust to the change in pressure. There is a chance you could lose the fish but when you don't want to be keeping everything it certainly helps and seems to work.
@TheFishLocker5 жыл бұрын
Peter Mcgrath - Thats it Peter, if you do slowly play them up they can go back better. It doesn’t always work but it can help. Although you cannot always tell what’s a ling and what is an eel and if you hold them half way up you are likely to lose them. 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻🎣

@@TheFishLocker Yes, they can have blue colored meat (cooks white, but a little strange looking), as well as some blue pigmentation of the skin. Talking to a biologist about it, it is apparently diet-related and 90% of blue Ling are females. We call them "Smurfs", for obvious reasons. VERY aggressive, lots of teeth, and a mouth like a 5-gallon bucket. Just pure eating machines. As an aside, the same biologist said they are about a perfect sport fishery. They propagate well, grow fast, and get big. With reasonable harvest regulation, they are VERY sustainable. And delicious. Probably my favorite fish to eat.

Well good on you for your catch and for heading home well stocked and satisfied. Wrecks become habitats offering some safe spots to fish. Your tinny boat is lacking a few rod holders, this would save you forever turning and checking, cheap as chips to have made and you will wonder why you didnt have them all along. We fish for the larger fish over here on our Reefs using TLD's and Penns, always have to set the drag half way, double hooked lines can be an arm stretcher 2 x 15 kg fighting takes it out of you real quick. Boats that come checking you out like that are sussing out the ground finding marks, this will always happen just human nature. So happy feeding on your Ling fish, hope you handed some fillets out to friends and your friendly service station owner, tight lines and catch you next time

Fishpest Aussie - Great comment. I have rod holders but when fishing like this I like the rods to be kept low so any heave or roll in the boat doesn’t lift the lead or line very much and disturb the bait. 😉👍🏻🎣 I shared my catch with my father in law and my wife cooked us some delicious fish cakes. 😊🎣🐟🍽
