Milano-Sanremo is the first of cycling’s five ‘Monuments’ and at a whopping 294km is the longest race on the men’s pro calendar! In a race so long, riders need to consume a lot of calories. Seven thousand to be exact, if Conor’s experience is anything to go by. But how much food is that? Conor & Manon went to Italy to ride the last 100m of ‘La Classicissima’ to find out!

I struggle to get to my daily recommended 2200 calories... let alone 7000! On a regular ride around Geneva (CH) where I live, as an absolute noob and amateur, at most I've eaten 700 calories. I think it was at a local Canadian food truck that serves poutine. And I was really full...

I was thinking this exact thing. Where are the fluid calories? It's generally much easier on your digestive system to ingest calories via fluid than via food, and it gets into your energy systems quicker. I feel like this wasn't a very fair representation.

@@gcn Donuts are part of a well-rounded diet, and one in each hand is needed for a well-balanced diet! Can you tell that I have practiced these rationalizations before? On a more serious note, since a bigger rider would burn more calories than a smaller rider when riding the same course at the same pace, wasn't it a bit unfair (or overly ambitious) to give Manon the same 7,000 calorie goal as Connor?

I met a man who did a multi-week solo kayak trip. He had to carry as much of his own supplies as possible. He started the trip INTENTIONALLY 30 pounds overweight. At the end of the expedition, he was actually underweight. The strategy was to carry a lot of calories in reserve by being overweight at the start. Probably not a good strategy for bike racing, but I wonder how it would be for a long endurance ride, such as a ride across America, or a relatively uninhabited area such as Mongolia.

I did 6000 cal a day for a year while lifting weights seriously and consistently, I was always eating if I wasn't lifting, it took a lot of effort to do it without much added sugar. I figured I ate well over 1000 bananas a year. Breakfast was like eating 4 breakfasts, that makes it much easier, I'm not a natural breakfast eater, but I noticed when I ate breakfast I became hungry earlier, and just felt like I needed more food throughout the day. It takes a real effort, and time.

The videos with the likes of Jenny Graham or GCN team are great but I can't help think the trips to cafes, shops and toilets etc are easy with a camera crew to look after the bikes. How does locking up your bike work in the real world, on your own and without a massive lock weighing you down? Help on this would be awesome. X

They also do the pizza 50 where in 50 miles have to eat a small(not the smaller personal) pizza on a gravel route through some tough mountains also in the desert in the South Western US. If done right a single burrito or burger could easily be 900 calories alone. Then add fries and a drink to easily make it a total of 1500.

This causes you a bucket of discomfort. I learned the hard way to eat all the time nuts chocolate berries fruit milkshake etc. that way I managed to eat 2 X full meals a day at cafe stops. The weight was lost and the bibs were uncomfortable. I. Ow pack a smaller pair of bibs to swap into when needed.

Well he's twice the size of Manon and after watching other films with him in I think it was just a normal days food intake for him!😂😂😂😂 Riders don't actually take on board the amount of calories they expend! Their bodies are used to going into deficit while still being able to crank out the watts! I reckon a top rider will maybe only take on maybe an extra 20 - 30% of carbs during a race. Otherwise they'd need the toilet rather rapidly. The deficit gets repaid later.

Amusing however, the pros ate 7000 calories over the course of 6+ hours and 294k ride. Eating 7000 calories on a 100k ride? Good way to make yourself sick. LOL

Instead of this calorie bacchanal, here's an idea: why don't you put your best descender (probably Hank) at the top of the Poggio with both a regular race bike AND a race bike with a dropper post and time his descents with each bike?

@@gcn Fair enough. And with Dan performing the experiment nonetheless. However, the Poggio is a shorter descent with more severe hairpin turns that what Dan seems to be descending in the Alps. Might have been interesting to assess what the real time difference is in such a short and nervous descent. It seems it was a good enough difference for Mahoric to claim victory, but how many seconds are we talking here?
@gcn

I calculated that I average about 8000 calories expended when I ride the Gravel Worlds 150 mile race the last 4 years. There's no way I can eat that much in 10 hours. I'm sure I can get about 2000 calories while on course, though.
