Can We Save This Old Abandoned Backhoe?

Can we save this old abandoned backhoe? My dad bought this old Massey Ferguson 30H backhoe locally that had been sitting for 2-3 years, it's in tough shape but we want to get it started and bring it home.

My grandad has a 40B with only 800 hours and all the paint looks great with no pealing. Was stored indoors all its life with light use for plowing snow only. Starts immediately too!

Hi Mac, I just knew it will start as if it was parked yesterday, there is a Perkins they can sit for 20 years under cover and will fire up immediately, great video, hope you got your million views, thumbs up

That’s right Jan they are a tough old engine. And like the 135 I’m sure this would run forever on a cup of fuel too. I doubt I’ll see a million views but I’ll be happy to see 1000 lol.

Yeah she was pretty rough looking but mechanically it wasn’t in too bad of shape. The thin metal on that cab didn’t stand a chance in our salt air and salty roads.

Great little loader for bale work , level lift and likely to have sharp responsive hydraulics & steering . Your coastal climate has taken it's toll but that's mostly cosmetic .

Yeah I think it would be good for that too, its fairly small and nimble. Salt sure hasn't been kind to it!

Thanks, you guys should have had the 30H over there too, the 30E was more common maybe. We had the 50H and 50HX here too, and the even the 50EX, but the 50 series were a little bigger machine. 4 cylinder.

Lol yeah old gumboot was perfect on there. Best we can tell it was there 3 years, supposed to have ran a year ago but they never moved it. Might as well of been in the bay I guess lol rusty enough.

Nice loader Backhoe tractor I love it ! looked like fan belt was off on front you will have pull the pump off should be just 2 bolts the shaft to is left handed thread i made 13 teeth spine shaft for my MF 20C use ratchet takes about 20 min change belt

It’s on there but they have a spare hanging there loose and zip tied out of the way. I guess so they can change it quicker if they had to.

This one we ended up selling off before doing much to it. Mechanically it was working well but needed a lot of work to really bring back to how we'd want it. Someone made an offer on it we couldn't refuse so off it went.

Im shocked at how the engine cranked so easily. its running fine only a little bodywork and paint job.The most exciting bit is that its a Massey Fergusson. parts and service is not a problem. i keep telling my friends that my next tractor will be a Massey with a standard cummins engine

Yeah those old Perkins were a good motor, can’t kill them. Massey with a Cummins is great, kind of like our 6710 White 👍

Oh cool. Those Ford 3000’s were popular here back in the day too, great little tractors. We always had Massey so we had a couple 135’s. Still have one of them and it’s still in regular use.

Now I understand the "body work" comment on your FB post, it spent most of it's life outside next to the saltwater! That MF is impressive, sounds better than the MF 135. Buckets look to be in good shape, most old backhoe buckets are bent up and covered in wear resistant welds.

Yeah she'll get a little bit of a resto this winter, maybe not a full rebuild or anything, just tidy it up some.

That's how massey's start hot or cold. Neighbors got one and it can be 20 out and it tires right up. Not sure if it has glow plugs or intake heater or not.

Most of them will not have any start aid, the 3 cylinders seem to be good starters, the 4 and 6 can be a bit cranky though.

Sweet little thing there Scott!! 🙂👍think it's about built in the mid 80's ?🤔 I wouldn't mind having that, I could be wrong but I think those backhoe's were built in Manchester like the rest of the industrial Massey's equipment?🤔 and then Massey's industrial line were taken over in the 90's (I think?🤔) by anther company, can't remember which one and painted white, great video Scott. 🙂👍

She’s a 1991 built in Manchester, there was a management buyout of MF industrial in the early 90’s and they became Fernec which was sold a few years later to Case but still operated as its own company. When Case and NH merged they sold off Fermec to Terex which is when they started painting them white 👍

There was a few around here seemed like they died off when they became Fermec. I see Terex sold the design so some company called Mecalac now or something.

Slide the "back actor" over yo one side, and fold the arm across behind. Leaves them very compact for yard work.

No they are quite uncommon in this part of the world. I’ve only seen a few of them on JCB’s. Certainly seems to do the job, but I’m not sure if I could get used to calling it a back actor haha.

I like when ppl just add a battery try to start instead of doing full service change alll fluids only to find engines siezed etc great video

Yeah we just put enough fluids in it so we knew it wouldn’t do any damage if it did run. Once we got it running and moved home we did the full service. It’s hard to start putting too much money into something without knowing what kind of condition it is in mechanically. Thanks for watching.

had a mf 30 e for 10 years no back actor only a loader with a homemade weight block behind ..........fed all my cattle and cleaned out a bitof manure .........never missed a beat and sold it for what it cost ..............ran on fumes .........

Jumpins, if I bought something like that, nuthin would work. Nice MF. Lucky guys. My neighbour down the road has something like that. MF 20 industrial. Same as a 240 MF. I think. His is just the tractor. Has a snow blower on it.

Yeah few industrials around they were nice tractors. This one has engine the same as a 135 but back end more like 375 size. 4 speed power shuttle. Backhoe comes off but there is no PTO or 3 point hitch unfortunately, maybe that was an option.
