Can We Train Snake Discovery's Macaw to FLY?

We teamed up with Emily and Ed from ‪@SnakeDiscovery‬ and their rescue blue and gold macaw, Cheyenne, to see if we could train Cheyenne to fly from a surface other than a person (who needed to give encouragement to 'send' her to fly) and see if we couldn't convince her to take a flight all by herself! Could we do it?! Watch to find out!

That honestly sounds like one of the most terrifying things I could imagine. A flying alligator, not only does it sound like a comic book. Bridges seems like something that just shouldn’t happen because it would be so terrifying. And Rex is probably the cutest alligator I’ve seen

I am a dog trainer who desperately wants a parrot, and I absolutely LOVE watching your videos. It's fascinating to get to see the overlaps and differences in training a dog vs a parrot. Love how you explain the concept of pressure- and the absolute importance of finding the right pressure level and not over-doing it- to help push an animal into a behavior you want from them. I've been watching Snake Discovery build their zoo, too, so it's cool to get to see a parrot be trained that I've seen in other contexts ❤️❤️

Omg I'm so happy! After watching bird tricks, one day I came back to watch the same video Jamie watched, and I noticed the handling too. So when I saw the community post about the colab, I knew it was going to be touched upon. Cheyenne never fails to amaze me on how quickly she picks up on things, and Emily and Ed are great bird parents. I can't wait to see more Cheyenne amidst the baby snakes and egg videos this year! Thank you so much Dave, Jamie and Capri! For the amazing content. I've been using some of these principles to also train my dog

Where did you get the chest sweater. I have 2 Green Cheeks that pluck down to the down feathers. And I wonder if that would work as each pluck their chest and then they pluck each others back/neck feathers. We have tried everything under the sun including anxiety meds, $600 laser therapy, Pluck no more spray added to their water dish and on their feathers. Our oldest is also getting mean and when out, she will fly to you and rub her head on your face and hand, but then out of nowhere she will attack me and bite sometimes drawing blood. And if I grab her, she will chomp down on my hand.

Yay my two favorite channels collab :D I am glad that you helped Cheyenne, I know that Ed and Emily are amazing bird parents but everyone needs opinion from people like you from time to time, and training bird that is plucked so much and not so confident must be harder. I am sad that I can't bring Bruno to you, so you could meet him, but sadly I am from Europe so no way :/ But I am glad that I can ask you for your opinion through an e-mail. I am grateful for all the advice i've got from you, because even though I keep parrots for over 20 years now, I've learned so much with past 9 months with Bruno and watching your channel and few other channels. One most important thing, that changed how quick my quaker got used to me, apart from being hand fed, was the fact that you taught me that leaving new bird for few days alone to 'get used to new place' is stupid thing that results in bird being familiar with everything in the room except you. And of course I've learned few tricks how to remove pesticides from veggies and fruits - my biggest fear with giving grocery store food to my bird - and also you helped me to choose food for my parrot :D And yes, he now think that Hagen Harri pellets are treats and he accepts those as a reward, but Bruno is amazing, he accepts carrot/lettuce/pumpkin seed and other seeds/nuts as a reward, he also accepts voice as a reward, when I tell him 'good bird', he also, sometimes tell 'good bird' to himself when he do the trick. Thank you once more and awesome collab!

To nonbird people, considering it progress that an animal begins to take treats rather than ceases to take treats as part of their training seems a step backwards. We consider a dog to have advanced when he doesn't look for the treat but rather for the praise when the behavior is correct.
@MrJdubz100
@MrJdubz100 2 жыл бұрын
Dogs are very different from parrots. Parrots for the most part do not care about pleasing people, it is not in their nature. Their attitude is more of “whats in this for me?” And so we offer treats. Its harder to train a bird that is not motivated by treats but it is possible if it is motivated by praise or affection.

We say, "Spray" and they both come to us and squint their little eyes and get ready. Today was field day at my school, and I brought them to spray my students and cool them off. They were a big hit there too. So a bunch of thumbs up and a huge positive review on the spray bottles!

Coming here from the Snake Discovery video. It was so cool to watch Cheyenne's progress over just a weekend! I've never had a pet bird, they just require too much for me to feel like it's a responsible option, but I love watching videos of them and seeing their antics and personalities. On a slightly unrelated note, Emily is so tall! I remember her mentioning she's close to 6', but usually she's alone in the camera perspective of their videos, or sitting, so it never really hit until I saw the shot of all of you against the mural wall.

I read this “can we train a snake to fly?״ My Chako is 32 years old, and doesn’t transport by flying, his only flights off are when he’s spooked or over heightened. Doesn’t use flight intentionally. Just after cleaning up his his diet to completely natural diet, healthy and balanced, got him to do his first intentional hop (he was so enthusiastic about getting weighed on our weighing platform), I am always happy to see older parrots learn to use their body intentionally and be more physically active, it seems like diet can be a major part of the challenge apparently.

Watching this I'm realising I've got one thing working really well with training with my 2, being rescues & older, they're really hard to work with & easily freaked out by everything, but in settings like where Cheyenne was sort of looking at taking off, but not willing to, with my 2 I can just say "Good Girl" each time they start the motion I want & they understand that's the right thing to do & with enough repeating the good girl, they will almost always follow though & gain the confidence to do it eventually, I just have to be sure to use my voice like a clicker & start the "g" as they actually start the action. On diet & training treats though, what are the suggestions for lorikeets? Nowadays mine work best for their regular nectar mix that's the correct diet for them to have as their main diet. They used to work for grape & other fruit juices, but now I have the best brand of nectar mix (wombaroo) as their diet, they actually prefer that over any other treats. They'll also work for popcorn, IF the texture is right, which means I have no idea what, but if they have free access to it, they will pick up & drop piece after piece until they find one that's "just right" & then carry it into their cage to dunk into their water to disolve in their beak. I'm teaching one of them to climb down from his cage to the ground right now, with wire mesh on the outside of the cage for climbing & sticking popcorn into it to reward him for trying & getting part way down, which he finds challenging, but now he's seriously just climbing down so as to pull each piece of popcorn out of the wire & drop it onto the ground & if he finds a piece he likes the texture of, he'll carry it back up, if not, he will seriously just drop them all & come back up empty handed, with the "drop stuff game " being his apparent reward. Lettuce is their next favourite treat after popcorn & their regular food, but again it depends on the taste & texture of each individual piece & the "drop stuff game" still outweighs the reward of eating it a lot of the time too,hence why I want to teach him to climb the whole way down to the ground, curioius to see what he's going to do when he gets there, to where every piece of food & toy from his cage has been dropped to. That bird CAN fly, but refuses to. My other bird can't fly & right now won't climb down either, she just waits for the boy to bring the treats up, then takes them off him. She's a quick learner when motivated though, so once the boy is doing it, she'll likely start doing it too

Poor Cheyenne, it always makes me sad to see birds that are plucked. I adopted an African Gray 10 years ago that was completely plucked and now you can’t even tell that she had a problem. My macaw is an overpreener so I’m working on that with her. She barbers some of her feathers too.
@mehere8038
@mehere8038 2 жыл бұрын
working on it how? My eyebrows are being worked on by my plucker, seems there's something wrong with the inner section of my left one that needs to be fixed & I'm not helping by pulling away & refusing to let the hairs be pulled out where needed she's explained to me repeatedly, but how are you actually working on the overpreening with yours, as opposed to the other way around?
@MrJdubz100
@MrJdubz100 2 жыл бұрын
Plucking is a little more difficult than overpreening and barbering as it doesn’t release endorphins like plucking does. For ovenpreening an organic apple cider vinegar mixed with water solution helps in some cases (just don’t get it in their eyes) and teaching them to play more with toys in their free time and being more self sufficient. Whenever a bird first starts to feather mutilate its important to take them to an avian vet for their input and to rule out medical.

@@MrJdubz100 My little girl has a 10 year history, locked up in a TINY cage, only a few cms longer than her body in it's longest direction & no toys or anything to do but sit there & pluck & scream & rock & cry from the stress. Second bird (boy) from that same home had a bit bigger cage, but no physical contact for 8 or more years & a glove used for food & water changes due to biting. I have both now in the same cage (much bigger than their old ones obviously) & they get comfort from each other & defend their cage together & want to be together, but boy can't handle touch & girl just desperately wants it. It's endorphins yes, but it's also a stress thing, largely cause she just wants a bird form of a cuddle from her boy & can't get it. There does seem to be hormones involved too, she really wants him to mate with her & he'll try to mate with me, but not with her. Letting her preen me does calm her a lot, just the action & also being able to put her body against my face. I can't touch her at all though without setting her hormones off. If I let her preen me till she's had enough, especially just before bed, she settles after, if I can't (sometimes she insists on half an hour to an hour & I just don't have the time), then I will hear the little screams as she plucks after she's gone into her cage. Apple cider vinegar, that's topical you mean? Not sure if I can get it onto her, other than potentially in bath water, but that would go into her eyes. Both HATE spraybottles & freak out with them, they stunk of flyspray when I got them, I think they may have been sprayed with that for mite or ant control or something in their last home (how they survived it is beyond me) & probably got in their eyes & was horrible for them, that's my guess anyway, dunno, but sprays are an absolute no go. What percentage vinegar to water if I do come up with a way to try it? Toys, she loves natural branches, bottlebrush, fresh & old, fresh I limit, cause seemed to make her hormonal/tell her it's spring, but the old ones she loves pulling the old buds off & chewing the branches, gum tree branches with gumnuts too, so she always has a good mix of native chewing branches in her cage & they have little water containers with Asian greens in them too (as in roots in the water so they stay fresh for 2-3 days while the birds eat the plant 10 times their size) that they eat a lot of & again the chewing she loves & when all the leaves are gone, I put them on the cage floor & she shreds the lot. Lots of rope perches at the top of the cage for her too, as she likes the challenges of them & their movement & also bark for chewing, basically as much entertainment as I can give them. She won't use any "bird toys" though, but natural stuff she will. I bought her heaps of toys meant for preening, but she won't touch them. I also bought a soft toy lorikeet & a little ornamental one, thought if she could cuddle with one of them it might help her, but she's scared of them (both my birds are). They're fine with the wild birds & with the cold weather they have bird videos on for a few hours most days instead of going outside & she enjoys watching a little & verbally responding to (other bird will sit & watch for hours, she's not into that, to hyperactive & wants to be shredding instead & just calling to them while doing so, only comes out to see where it's gone when it stops) & bird photos they both love, but the soft toys freaked them out. Both are MUCH happier than when I got them, but she's still stressed, cause she wants a friend to have physical contact with & I'm really stuck on that one, cause the 2 of them are really strongly bonded & really want to be together, but boy won't give her the touching she needs. That's my thinking anyway, but I'm keen for ANY suggestions from anyone as to anything else I could try or have missed, especially from people who have had success with birds in their care, so any suggestions at all for my little girl? Oh & they LOVE bells too! Apparently that's common in lorikeets, used to be some bell rage, but none of that now, they like playing with bells together, grabbing them off each other & interacting together with them. Boy's throwing one of his hanging bells around right now, trying to get the girl's attention cause he wants to play with her. She's actually not playing right now, is chatting back to him, but is too consumed by a piece of mandarine hanging on a food skewer. Boy will probably come over & join her on that in a minute & combo of rubbing heads together while eating & also using the fact it's on a stick to lift it up & spin it around & play with it together. He just will NOT preen her though & pushes her away when she tries to preen him & sometimes goes into full on screaming fight if she keeps trying to preen him & he's really not in the mood for being touched at all. He just does constant head scratching with his foot & looks kinda longingly at her & me while doing so & really looks like he wants to be touched, but just can't stand any physical contact from anyone :(

The apple cider vinegar is 1 cup per quart of water or about that. It is generally sprayed yes. How is the humidity where the birds are? They are more resilient than you think. With how long they have been plucking, which is stress related but also releases endorphins (like cutting for humans) which has them continue the behavior. Try increasing foraging if you can too.

Isn’t raising your hand the cue for flight? Because the unsuccessful flight she called for the bird but she never raised her hand for her. Then in the last one soon as she raised her hand she flew. Just curious 🙂.
@mehere8038
@mehere8038 2 жыл бұрын
Something I noticed was that she only raised her hand after she had the bird's attention. She was calling the bird for flight, but it wasn't even looking, so she kept calling & then only gave the flight cue of a raised hand when the bird was looking & on the table, beyond that, when the bird was actually potentially going to fly. They say that using the cue & having it ignored reduces the power of the cue each time that happens, so I assume that's why they only gave the cue when there was a chance it would be responded to. With experience, you can tell if a bird is going to take flight, or if there is zero chance it will & most of the time in this video it was a zero chance scenario

Will her feathers ever grow back? On her body? 😩
@sarawrr07
@sarawrr07 2 жыл бұрын
It's unlikely they'll ever grow back. In other videos Emily has explained that Cheyenne has been plucking for years, and it started in her previous home. Feather follicles can only grow so many feathers in a lifetime and Cheyenne has been plucking for so long she's likely plucked all the feathers they're capable of producing, so they can't grow any more.
@BirdTricks
@BirdTricks 2 жыл бұрын
Likely not, the follicle looks too damaged from all her previous years of plucking them before Emily and Ed even got her. There are some very informative videos on that on Snake Discovery's channel showing and explaining it. I wish they could though! I'm sure if it was possible, it would have happened in their care. I'm just thankful she doesn't continue to ruin any other feathers, especially those responsible for helping her in flight so that she can still truly be a bird!

I like snake discovery and bird tricks but I am worried that bird tricks doesn't use a pet psychic and that's a problem. For example I have a scarlet macaw that's a rescue He's 22 years old and I found out through my pet psychic The reason why he doesn't fly is because is a former owners we're always afraid he would fly away. So I'm not sure how bird tricks would solve that problem. Also with respect to their diet that's not really the diet that my vet recommends and that's a problem. And then finally I always buy my pellets in the bins because they're much fresher. It's really not a good idea to buy pellets in bags because the bags don't currently say when the pellets are manufactured and they could be sitting in the shelves for months and you want to make sure that your pellets are manufactured within the last 6 to 8 weeks because oils do turn rancid and slightly toxic after about 6 to 8 weeks. The pellets that are found in the bins your local store will generally get and use up 1 to 220 lb bags per week so you know that they're fresh. And if you compare your bagged pellets to the fresh ones and the bins you will notice a huge difference in the way they smell with a bin pellet smelling a whole lot fresher

"Collaborating?" No, they're marketing, and this sort of thing, which they've been doing far too often, is way beyond a major annoyance. Find the other bird videos that are getting the most views, and then "collaborate" with them to market to an even wider audience.

@@siberianhusky5874 she was literally getting trained and they changed her diet, you could also argue that by being on the bird tricks channel itself you are watching glorified advertisements (like how they always bring up their own brand of food and toys for example even with people who aren't KZbinrs) so if you don't like that then leave, you also didn't seem to mention how they did a video with Mikey the Macaw and friends which could also be seen as marketing for the channel but oh no you go after snake discovery? Both channels I mentioned as well got the same treatment and education as a non KZbinr/ non quote unquote "famous person" so what's your issue? It shouldn't matter what's being done at the end of the day as long as the bird is being cared for properly.

Cheyenne reminds me of my dog: she has no problem doing what she's being asked to do but is just stubborn about trying to do it the first few times. Once you get past those few times they pick up on stuff very fast though. Only difference is my dog will start doing other things i have taught her in an attempt to get a treat the "easy way" vs Cheyenne just chilling on the counter. (the tricks she tries are not always physically easy compared to what I want her to do)

Yes or medical related in some cases. I guess I’m still not seeing how thats different. My African Gray when I first adopted her 10 years ago was a big plucker. She isn’t any longer. My Catalina Macaw is an overpreener and barberer. I didn’t treat them any differently from my Senegal, a non plucking or barbering bird when it comes to training. There was no “training for pluckers”.

@@mischiefthedegenerateratto7464 So any ideas how to get my little plucker to tollerate my hand moving after she's stepped up? I've actually given up on step up, I got her to do it after many, many months of work, but the second I moved my hand with her on it, she totally freaked out & returned to refusing to step up with her second foot. I worked with her again, got her confident in 2 foot step up, kept doing it daily for about a month, then tried moving my hand slightly again & again total reversion & refusal, so yeh, I've just given up after persevering for SO long & not getting anywhere, but I really wish she would trust me enough that I could pick her up & move her around, or even have her sit on my shoulder. I know she'd like it if she'd do it, but she's just too freaked out from years of abuse to be willing to trust a human on anything like that, she wants to be in full control of her movements
