Riders want to know: Can we trust the T?
Trains and buses run late or never show. A crumbling infrastructure has led to equipment failures that threaten riders' safety. Many riders have simply given up and joined the snarl of car traffic. After one year on the job, Phillip Eng is working on multiple fronts to get the trust restored. But is he on track?
GBH News Transportation reporter Bob Seay welcomes MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, State Secretary of Transportation Monica Tibbits-Nutt, and Jarred Johnson of Transit Matters, on stage to ask what it will take to bring reliable transit service back-and if the state can afford the needed changes.
Phillip Eng is the General Manager and CEO of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). A Civil Engineer with nearly 40 years of transportation experience, including President of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Long Island Rail Road and Interim President of New York City Transit, Mr. Eng brings his abilities to spearhead challenging initiatives, modernize aging systems and prioritize safety to bear for the MBTA.
As Secretary, Monica Tibbits-Nutt is responsible for the four divisions of MassDOT: Highway, Rail and Transit, Registry of Motor Vehicles and Aeronautics. As Acting Secretary, she also serves on the Massport and MBTA Board of Directors.
Jarred Johnson is the Executive Director of TransitMatters. He came to this position after serving as a project manager for the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation where he managed a variety of complex affordable housing real estate projects and supported organizing efforts for better service on the Fairmount Line.
