The 1896 Olympics didn’t include the best athletes in the world. There were about 240 participants from 14 nations. About two-thirds of the participants were Greek. The rest were mostly European. Some of the participants were tourists on vacation who happened to be in Athens, Greece at the time.

Given all factors, I doubt the runner in this video would break 2:08 on the 1896 olympics track. These factors include shoes, surface, turns, air quality, period training techniques and dietary knowledge. After 1896, I think there is near 0% chance you'd medal in any olympics. The main reason is they were the best in the world in their time. You are a gifted local athlete. No disrespect at all. Cool concept for a video. I was a 1:54 guy. Paul Pilgrim or Mel Sheppard would destroy us in our primes.
@Bweyg Жыл бұрын
I think he's just showing us how slow it is to now when we HAVE the equipment of today. For sure I would be dead last even in the slowest section of runners if I ran like they did in 1896 XD and I have a 5:26 mile time in shoes that weren't exactly great for racing so it's not slow, but those guys made that time look extremely slow especially the way they ran and what they had and whatnot. Absolutely crazy how we still struggle to beat those times with the equipment we have today.

Nutrition and training. In the 19th Century pro runners were called pedestrians. They weren't in the Olympics. Everything we know about nutrition and training were invented since 1896 though. Walking to develop aerobic base. Jogging. Intervals. Fartlek. All didn't exist then.
