Bleeding during pregnancy can be mistaken for a period, but since it’s physically impossible to have a menstrual cycle while pregnant, it often indicates something more serious. In this video, reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Chantae Sullivan-Pyke breaks down what you need to know about bleeding during pregnancy. Although it can be completely benign and happens in a quarter of normal pregnancies, bleeding often indicates an emergency such as miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or problems with the placenta that should be evaluated immediately.
