Can You Beat Diablo 2 with ONLY the Mercenary? (PART 1)

Diablo 2 challenges usually involve random restrictions, primarily a slew of them applied to the player. So, I figured why not take that concept as far as I could go; could you beat Diablo 2 by only relying on the Mercenary? A run in which you never attack once? All in all, it seems pretty fair to me. This isn't a charity, really make him earn that paycheck.

Few tips: Decrepify against bosses is king because it reduces the amount of nasty spellcasts significantly. Dim Vision disables everything except basic attacks on affected monsters. No Lighting from Souls, no arrows from archers, no resurrecting from resurrecting fucks. Attract is literally the best curse you can imagine for crowd-control. You curse one mob, which gets a higher threat level than you or your mercenary. A monster that is in direct contact with you or the merc will literally turn around to hit the cursed mob, if it's right next to it. It can't be overwritten which is awesome as it allows you to curse the rest with whatever you want. Instead of all the enemies bearing down on you they fight among themselves, making it much easier to deal with groups. There will be one downside for you. It does actually attract more enemies to the fight that would be out of range normally. It works great if you intend to blow everything up with corpse explosion. Not quite sure how it might work out for you.

I was thinking the exact same thing, I'd just add Terror to the list of useful tools in places like the maggot lair and arcane sanctuary. Though Attract is questionable, if a monster gets killed because of that curse, it becomes a slippery slope.

I'm impressed you didn't just IM normal. It's pretty easy to get through the bosses when you use IM. Don't forget the to hit ratio is the same on mercs. Your boy needs a few levels so he doesn't get worked too hard. And yes I fall asleep constantly...

This is a very fun idea for a video, and the commentary is hilarious. Although this is a good example of why everyone who likes diablo should play project diablo 2. The merc ai is radically improved, they can wear boots belt and gloves, and all five acts' mercs are a valid choice! Great vid

If you gona use an a2 mercenary, make sure to try and give him gear that increased his attack speed and resistances. Also life steal is a must, so you can use a different curse other than life tap. I would play around trying to craft savage polearms (one diamond, one belt, one kris and a staff in the horadric cube). Cannot wait for part 2! This video was really entertaining!!

1. Chipper skull into socket shield helps so much before first merc. (And actually carries all normal diff. if you want it to) 2. Theres a cube recipe for polearms. Any diamond + kris + staff + belt = 66%-80% magic polearm. This recipe carries hard cause it can get a second magic stat (like flat bonus damage) and also come as nm or hell version of that weapon.

I was thinking about it while watching you face Mephisto, the Amazon and her passives (Dodge for melee and Avoid for ranged, Evade for dodging while moving) might have been useful for face tanking bosses, not to mention using Inner Sight to lower their defense. The Decoy skill doesn't do damage, and if so, that could be another potential damage sponge for the merc, combine that with the Avoid and Dodge passives and that is two meat shields that bosses will have to chew through to get to the hero of Sanctuary, the merc (unless the boss just decides to toast the merc anyway lol). The only worry is not being able to break physical immunities like the Necromancer on the higher difficulties.

Hey Seer, Seeing how you're still using a Razortine which do 13-22 dmg, you could use the Horadric recipe: Diamond+kris+staff+belt to make a Savage polearm and get even a Exceptional polearm with Lifeleech and massive( subjective) enhanced damage and have a easier time. i recken barb is the best for this type of run. taunt acutely deals with a lot of problems in the game the merc struggles with. it stops ressurecting mobs from acutely ressurecting there allys since they focus on attacking, reduces the amount of casts casters do to try to attack. and as you said lets you be a meat shield. also i am pretty sure battle command does work on the skills with the merc so it will increase there damage output.

I believe you pick paladin for this, use a wand for lifetap charges as needed and use a telestaff to reposition ur merc as needed. In general Pally is a lot tankier and has thorns which suck but aren’t completely useless?

For Nightmare+ You should think about switching Mercenaries as the situation calls for it. For Andy, I wonder if a ranged merc with bone wall abuse would be more viable (like you did in normal.) And for Ancients, I wonder if Prayer + Insight + Decrep would be be the trick.
