Elden Ring holy damage only challenge run. Holy damage is garbage and here is why. Well... then again, maybe we just got spoiled by how OP frost and bleed are. Pure holy ony, so therefore no black blade/knife because of the lifedrain effect.

I once again learn the lesson to never just trust fextralife and always check if what they say is correct. The Elden beast CAN be defeated with pure holy. Whoever put that on Fextralife was simply wrong and by now their site no longer says that the beast heals from holy. And to reiterate once more: I didn't even consider black knife/black blade because of the lifedrain which more like a status effect that's added onto the damage type itself. Also my conclusion is that holy damage is kind of broken in this game. Different sources behave according to different rules and the numbers don't add up. You'd think all sources of holy would behave the same, but they don't or in case patches have changed it, they didn't. In fact, in this video when I defeat the undead enemies, I still had to kill them twice, even though holy is advertised to kill the undead outright. Also the black blade/knife special attack behaves in it's own unique way. For example Radagon is immune to the attack itself but not its special effect. The envoy horn should do pure holy, but is called magic in the description, and the numbers don't add up when taking holy resistance into account. So all in all, holy damage is very very strange in this game. Different damage sources, all called holy, behave according to separate rules it seems. Or maybe it's just "working as intended." Obviously I could only have used things I knew about. Some people have pointed out that the halo scythe's special attack is a great source of holy damage. Unfortunately I didn't know that weapon even existed before doing this video. Which is a shame. Essentially, I just looked up holy damage spells and then went for the pure holy damage melee weapons. Melina's blade was a late inclusion just because it looked cool, but obviously there were more options available that I didn't consider at the time. Oh and the skip to the snowfield still works. Fromsoft did try to patch it by including a deathcam, but you can still make it to the bottom despite of that. In fact, it will feature in my next video.

The reason the ball is inconsistent is because you have to watch it fall off the cliff. If you see it fall off you get runes, but if you don't see it , you don't get it.

A few things. Disregarding the use of blade of calling as you probably already know that it also has physical damage. You could maybe have used Order's Blade as well for extra damage. Additionally if you wanted to get real crazy you could have gone with the cracked crystal tears in your wondrous physick, as that deals holy damage. I would also bet that the pots for sleep and holy work on splash, as I've not seen any fail to work on splash

Remember that you get ritual pots, too, for bigger damage and other effects. I think they count if black firebombs count for a firebomb run, especially since you're heavily limited on cracked pot inventory.

The Black Knife's weapon art does pure holy damage and also drains a % of the enemy's health, making it extremely good against bosses, even holy-resistant ones. You can get it as soon as you reach Altus Plateau, it's dropped by the Black Knife Assassin sitting outside the Sainted Hero's Grave. The Black Blade incantation you get from Maliketh's remembrance is the same as that weapon art but potentially stronger.

You don't need physical damage sorceries if you've picked up shard spiral, the spell that you get from siding with Sellen. Even though it does magic damage, it can trigger damage multiple times for as long as it's in the Elden Beast's hitbox .... And the EB has a pretty big hitbox. So you just cast it a few times and it will fucking SHRED Elden Beast to pieces better than comet azur. Amazing spell for big bosses.

5:25, the reason it is inconsistent is because you don’t always look at it. You will not get the runes unless you literally watch it fall off the edge. Hope this helps for future runs :)

@@cosseybomb I can confirm that it is true you have to watch it go off the edge. Try it yourself. Do it while looking the opposite direction of the ball on the ledge. Then watch it go off the edge and keep looking that direction. You will not get the runes when you look away. And you will get the runes 100% of the time when you watch it.

This isn’t true, I have not looked at it many times and it has worked fine. At most I believe it partially has to do with proximity, so you want it to fall off near you and without going so fast that it gathers a lot of distance.

Looking at the animation, of the inconsistent special attack, it looks like it's aiming directly at the centre of the tarrget's hitbox, which against taller enemies reduces its reach by about 30%, since its reach is so low to begin with, a 30% reduction may mean it has effectively no reach at all. Maybe it'd hit better if you're not locked on? Of course, then you'd lose tracking on an attack with a slow windup, which may be even worse.

Yea pretty much this, this applies to fist weapons as well it's really frustrating. Against anything even slightly tall (even renalla/godrick size so pretty much every boss) you have to unlock and swing at the kneecaps or you miss what feels like at least 1/3rd of your swings. Hope they fix it one day cause it makes shorter range weapons feel really bad to play

Attacks with tracking will also turn if you hold a direction on the left analog stick while they're executing, so you can still get the "tracking" while no locked on, it's just reliant on you instead of the computer so it's slightly less accurate.

Ironic I know, but the thing is busted as all hell and Radagon is weak to fire and gets staggered really easily by the ash of war. And Elden beast is easily handled by flame of frenzy like most big bosses. Holy damage sucks ass and balls but faith builds definitely do not even if they’re not as busted as Arcane or Intelligence builds

I genuinely struggle to understand why FromS keeps including more options, but making fewer of them actually useful. The speed of spells and Ashes of War being the biggest hindrance to usefulness, since most bosses have to be faster with shorter recovery times now. But hey, it all “looks” cool, so I guess that’s all that matters.

You can use Ash summons and then you'll get more than enough time for even the slowest spells - even against the fastest bosses. And every single boss and mini-boss let's you summon. Although I can't deny that some spells/ashes are less useful than others.

I literally just stopped playing my sorcerer at the beast clergyman. It took a ton of tries to get it halfway, then I saw him transform, cried a little, he jumped around me like Rock Lee opening the 5th gate and then I died. Yeah, a pure caster is kinda shit in this game, especially with how garbage some of these run ups for bosses can be. Fuck you Godskin duo! The stronger spells take so long to cast you'll almost never get one off without getting hit for most bosses (the assassin in the optional dungeon I'm convinced is almost IMPOSSIBLE with just sorcery. Even carian slicer had too long of a wind up to deal enough damage. Haven't tried with Adula's Greatsword though, that might work) Your health is also rock bottom because if you boost that you can't boost your intelligence, which is required for stronger spells. If you don't boost mind you will NEVER be able to cast enough spells to kill anything above a basic mob. So health is literally the LAST stat you can afford to boost. Then there's the fact MOST of the bosses can just DODGE your better spells like the glintstone comet series of spells. And they can do it INFINITELY because THEY don't have fucking stamina! So you'll randomly waste spells trying to hit the target as they just roll through every attack perfectly. And because casting spells requires FP you have limited ammo AND you need to choose to use your heal window on health OR fp assuming you're tanky enough to take a single hit. This makes run ups annoying as you CAN'T afford to kill ANYTHING along the way unless you sacrifice almost ALL of your heals for fp. Which is only viable if your health is really low and you need to play flawlessly anyway. Then for many bosses there's the fact despite you WANTING to be at long range, CAUSE YOU'RE A CASTER, most of the spells in the game (almost all of them) have such HORRIBLE range they'll literally disappear well before they can hit. The other half of the time the boss will just move slightly and cause your attack to MISS. Eventually when I was having a ton of trouble with Adula, I looked up how to do the infinite Azur spell, put in a TON of work to get ALL the requirements which meant completing multiple long quests, aaaaaand they nerfed it. Barely did fuck all to Adula, or ANY other boss I tried it on. Any boss it can actually kill now isn't worth the trouble. I did eventually beat Adula, "throw rock" is the best spell in the game for many of the bosses. Comet is a close second. Now I'm playing as a strength character with a SHIELD and it's SO much easier. Still hard cause From Soft, but it's not stab nearest person in the face hard.

I don't know how the hell I keep hearing from people that faith is strong if not OP. Everything in this game that isn't inducing some build-up status effect is paaaaainfully mediocre if not terrible. Faith cops it horribly, there's barely even anything in this game that properly constitutes as being undead, and like this video shows, it barely even matters when/if they are undead, because the damage is still a tickle.

Faith builds get swarm of flies, blood wave, all the dragon status inflicting incantations, black blade, and the black fire incantations; tons of good status and damage abilities, but holy damage is useless and the holy damage incantations are as well

@@TheOneMagpie the rock incants. Swarm of Flies. Lightning Spear. Rot breath. Poison mist. Dragonice. Hell incants even have magic damage from Dragon Magic breath. Any damage type and any status effect, incants can do it. Everyboss has a damagetype weakness, and faith builds let you find that weakness and shred it. It just so happens that holy damage is usually resisted, but theres way more than just holy damage for faith builds.

I can see how trying to be a classic cleric feels lackluster while my Dragon-Warlock build is so versatile. I also have access to all the Frenzy spells, with the eye lazer having ridiculous range. And I havent even mentioned the red and black pyromancies, but tbh I find those lackluster as well. At least Reject and Wrath of Gold are pretty good

Actually liked using Cipher Pata most of my run. It could stun lock most things to death and Unblockable Blade was great for all the shielded enemies towards the end. I did have dragon incantations to fall back on though.

@@PressContinue I tended to use incantations for bosses and melee for general enemies, so I didn't notice how high some of the holy defenses are. For incantations I focused on coverage (ice breath, rot breath, fireballs, lightning, physical), so I always had at least something good for every boss.

You can build a solid pve faith/incantation build - with buffs, blackflame, frenzy spells, dragon spells, giantflame, blasphemous blade, etc. It's just holy damage specifically which is both weak and heavily resisted by many bosses.

I would say it's good to keep Gostoc alive because at the end of his quest he will sell you a ancient dragon smithing stone for 20,000 runes. This only happens when you complete Nepheli quest. It's one of those things where you have to do several NPC quest lines for him to sell it to you in the end.

The reason the big ball doesnt give runes is because you need to keep the camera on the ball as it falls down, if you arent looking at it then it wont drop runes.

Also also, scepter of the all knowing's weapon art removes elden beast's immunity, and drops holy resistance on everyone, including yourself. It does make elden beast possible then.

@@PressContinue the hp drain is % based, and apparently could outdamage the healing it gets. Plus the healing gets removed outright afaik. It could be something to look into. Ofcourse idk if you count the hp drain to be breaking the rules as its not perse holy, but at the same time, it's set % damage not related to any other damage types at all.

For those wondering about the ball - You have to be looking at it with your camera when it falls. Not necessarily your character, but orient your camera to the ball as it falls and you get the runes every time.

For the Godskin duo have you tried using St. Trina’s sword special attack? It releases a puff of sleep smoke so you could put one to sleep and then fight the other. I don’t think the smoke causes any damage itself.

@@PressContinue there's a sleep torch that can be found in the secret part of the snow mountain it's L2 inflicts sleep with zero damage. It would be easier than trying to barely miss the swords L2. I saw it on Iron pineapples "pacifist" run.

it isnt radagon is harder for pure holy as he is just a harder boss overall and elden beast takes damage from holy it just has 80% resistance like radagon it doesnt even heal from holy its all lies

@@kingjingaming9567 the take away is that since it's resistance to holy damage is high, you'll be using more time to kill the boss, not to mention possibly running out of fp for your main damage source since you're fighting both radagon and elden beast back to back.

Hey, just something you should consider if you’re doing a challenge like this again. Two handing a weapon causes your effective strength to rise by 50%, but that’s it. Since the coded sword has only faith scaling, the extra strength doesn’t do anything and it would be more helpful for you to have a shield to parry with.

Offensive incantations in general kinda suck in this game. I haven't done a dragon build so maybe dragon communion incants are better, but in my experience pretty much all offensive incants do pitiful damage for their FP cost or have ridiculously long windups, and it seems kind of unfair. Why do faith players get this dinky little AoE attack that takes so long to cast that your enemies will probably be in a different zip code by the time it goes off, while intelligence players get a gosh dang BFG that melts bosses in seconds?

Rotten and Frost dragon breath are great. Lightning Spear is good, maybe because it's one of the couple offensive incantations that aren't painfully slow. Pest Threads are not bad too, as well as the Boulder that you get from Gurranq.

Some good Incantations I've tested myself are Lightning Spear, the Boulder one can't remember the name, Rotten Breath and Black Flame. Black Flame is my favorite. It's chargeable with the charged version dealing 20% more damage along with having a larger AoE and the fireball explodes on impact. It's weighty meaning it can break through shield guards as well as stance break enemies, and it continues to sap hp for a short time after hitting the enemy. Only costs 18 fp to cast, and you can buff its damage with Golden Vow, FGMS, Godslayers Seal, Canvas Talismans, and Godwyns Icon (Godwyns Icon only increases its damage on the charged version but it's a beefy 30% extra damage.) Unfortunately the pure Holy Incants suck. Unless Crusible Tail does pure holy. In which case it's probably the only one that isn't trash.

The problem with the boulder rune farm thing is: you have to look in the direction of the ball to get the runes. If you look away while it "dies" you won't get them. I always bait it to fall down and then ride back to the grace while looking behind me until the runes appear.
