Glintstone arc is pretty sick actually. In PVE you can hit a bunch of small enemies following you, and in PVP you can use it very effectively to catch people running

Rock Blaster being good makes some sense honestly. Elden Ring's enemies take so damn long delaying their attacks that you can get in a ton of free rockblaster hits just monkeying under the boss's butt. It's just that you won't see anyone actually risking that as a mage because they'd rather stay far away, and half the time in melee people get caught trying to time dodges. If one simply monkeys with Rock Blaster, then they're getting in the damage while breaking poise xD

@@phoqueme between enemies being gods at dodging ranged attacks, and a lot of big bosses having pretty good ways to close gaps, I'd say you're right that there is no "safe range" a lot of the time.

@@phoqueme I beat the game yesterday, and the last 3 bosses I basically melee'd as a mage using Carian Slicer. I found that with like, Radagon for example, you can totally get in 2-3 hits while he's charging up his swing rather than wait until he finishes. It's funny, the game feels more rhythmic that way greeding hits during the wind-up rather than waiting until the afterswing.

For PvP it's probably got some niche uses against ganks, but it's gonna be tough to pull off. It's actually a crazy good spell for PvE though.

I like to think that Rock Blaster is the Mage equivalent of the Ghiza Wheel without the bleed, the difference being that magic can be buffed to hell and doesn't require stamina in this case. I guess people slept on how strong this spell can be if set up properly and considering how early you can get and use this spell It's definitely worthy of getting more recognition.

It’s funny but Rock blaster combos well with rancorcall hitting at the same time you drill because it racks up poise for a poise break even faster. Rancor call hitting a shield can stun lock them aswell for rock blaster to true combo without worrying about getting hit out of there animation.

Surprised to see star shower here. It's an early, weaker stars of ruin, but it melts with multi casts and makes some early invader and knight-style enemies trivial when it staggers them. Same with Flintstone arc. Excellent against mobile enemies like pages and some bosses that like to dodge, plus some excellent crowd control for when you have to get rid of a crowd of nobles.

I actually tested the damage between stars of ruin and star shower and star shower is way more cost effective. Oh and yeah glintstone arc is a godsend when you're getting overrun by little enemies.

Rancorcall and the juiced up version are some of my favorite spells. The balls don't do much damage on their own, but they almost always hit, and that chip damage adds up fast. Not to mention, they have one thing that no glintstone pebble can match: fashion.

Playing a Sorcerer feels like having a big toolbox of oddball spells that'll trivialize different scenarios if you pick em right. And then a few that are just universally good. My favorite discovery so far: Glintblade Phalanx will stunlock rolling boulders for long enough that you can just walk out of the way. No awareness required lol.

I think ancient death rancor was placed higher, but rancorcall was placed pretty low since it's a "worse" version. None of them are bad by any stretch though!

Rancorcall is the bad one. Ancient Death Rancor is a strict upgrade and it's why Rancorcall is placed so low.

Exactly, with a few items that spell absolutely wipes enemies and makes the game extremely easy imo. Stun-locks and poise-breaks for days. It felt like cheating when I used it with the Prince of Deaths staff

In my experience using both rancorcall and ancient death rancor, you can get more dps out of rancorcall because of its much lower fp cost, and lower stamina cost. Ancient death rancor didn't deal much more dmg over rancorcall to be worth an almost +100% fp cost above rancorcalls in my opinion, aswell as the fact that ancient death rancor fills much more of the screen, making it harder to see boss movements, which also means you could be blocking the sight of any hosts/co-opers your with. (screen clarity is more of a personal thing, i don't know how many other people care about that. I would assume you don't by the amount of people i see spamming breaths in fights like godfrey and malenia.) I do use them both one after the other though, it looks nice and ancient death rancors trail just looks great. Throw out a charged ancient death occasionally when the boss allows for extra thickness.

This is exactly why i love challenge runs of any souls game. Everything will have its meta, the spells, the weapons, the rings/talismans, whatever, due to lower damage, stat requirements, etc. So most people will just pass a big chunk of content cause they either heard its shit on the internet, or they already have a build that theyre confortable with. But when you impose a challenge on yourself, a whole new world of possibility opens up. You may find a new weapon with a moveset you really love, that you wouldnt have paid any attention to otherwise. Or you may come up with a whole new style of play that is suited for this specific spell youre using. Playing based on the meta can be fun, but there is a ton of enjoyment to be had when someone is willing to step out of their comfort zone.

I find it strange that star shower was on the list, since it is even better than stats of ruin and with a dedicated build it can be the center spell of it, the hing is that multiple proyectile spells start to get god midgame to endgame. Also crystal torrent is worse than crystal barrage.

Interesting. I've used crystal torrent before and it was pretty good iirc. Never used barrage before this video though. Also the tier lists were likely put together quickly for the release of the game, so they probably weren't tested much.

The multi-projectile spells start bad and get worse the farther in the game you get. Stars of Ruin are only remotely usable because charging them makes them significantly more efficient than they otherwise would be, which still puts it below every single one of the single target single projectile spells in the game.

Okay but crystal barrage and crystal burst (the one you get from demi human ruins) which sadly both don't get buffed by the crystalian staff are CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED, the gattling gun spell that early in the game that can be decent into late game against slower moving enemies and the burst spell acts as an absolute shotgun at close range in pvp

I wish we had more tibia spells. (Id also make fias mist a incantation to go with death lightning) Make a tibia vanguard where a pike skeleton will spawn in front of you and use charge forth to track your enemy, or a tibian champion that will spawn a sword and shield skeleton in front of you, blocking as long as you held the spell with a set guard strength that can be broken until you release it and the skeleton does a shield bash. Or even make a spell similar to the plasudisax dragon incant with the Lazer giant skeleton.

I love how there are 13 dragon communion spells, but 2 oracle spells. I could totally vibe with the Great Oracular Bubble ash of war as a sorcery. Get a third Clayman sorcery and a holy dmg option for sorceries. Maybe even the rot puke from the Cleanrot Knights as a Servant of Rot incantation. Sooooo much creative potential in the magic schools.

Rock Blaster, Glintstone Arc, Meteorite, goddamn Star Shower, Crystal Barrage, Ancient Death Rancor, even the Magma spells, these were all solid to really good spells even on release but people were so wowed by Comet Azur in PvE and Stars of Ruin in PvP that they decided everything else was garbage as a result.

The sad part is, Comet Azur sucks. People just don't understand basic math or strategy. It has low dps, low damage per FP, has insane wind-up, will never hit any opponent smaller than a building, won't hit building sized opponents for more than couple damage ticks before they simply move out of the way. Stars of Ruin is likewise a lackluster spell, but it at least will hit the enemy. Not for respectable damage, but at least it's more than zero.

Glintstone Arc helped me deal with some bosses or enemies that try to avoid projectiles and sorceries, if you catch them early or have to dodge in the other direction to bait them. Also groups of enemies, which is more FP efficient for the damage you deal in a group than other Glintstone sorceries.

The problem with most of these is that there is a spell that does what they do better. Collapsing Stars > Gravity Well; Ancient Death Rancor > Rancorcall etc..

I love rock blaster, I feel the only reason it's low for sorceries is because you usually don't want to get close up while being a sorc, very squishy if you go all out sorc. Also 100% starlight and glint arc where my go to spells for early game on my first playthrough, I wish starlight would have been till death, love the lantern but starlight made caves so nice and bright.

I'm a little late to the party but the Briar sorceries are actually very powerful and super fun to play with if you build exclusively around them. Double Guilty staffs, both Graven talismans, Golden Vow, Alberich's Armor, Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear, lots of faith and you're good. No Arcane investment needed. You don't even need Golden Vow.

Rock blaster aside, most of these didn't seem that bad. Even if some of them might be a bit slow for bosses, I would definitely use quite a lot of these for regular mobs.

As I've played more and more Elden Ring, I feel like a solid 90% of the "bad" spells, incantations and weapons aren't actually genuinely bad, they are just pretty niche, it's just that the "good" spells are SO good that you have to be intentionally hamstring yourself by not using them. Some are genuinely bad though...

I think there used to be a damage calculation error that was fixed a few patches after release that caused all multi-hit spells to tank their damage values. Barrage, Rock Blaster, Downpour, Bubbles, they were all really bad before a certain patch.

I did a magic fire build once towards the end of game and I swear it was the best. Between magma shot and the lava one if you have high FP you can just spam and fill a room with lava

Yeah, I hadn't used it before so I didn't know how good it was. I think the tier list makers see Meteorite of Astel and assume that Meteorite is just "bad" by comparison. Definitely not a bad spell at all

Meteorite isn't as consistent as Astel's, because the meteors don't come out in as much volume or frequency. However, early on it is very good. But the moment Astel's is available, it is immediately overshadowed. At least, this was my experience finding and testing all spells I found.

I had to pause right at the beginning because I saw one of the lists had ANCIENT DEATH RANCOR in D tier. That spell is EASILY in A tier, with its only flaw being the Faith requirement.

Rock Blaster got buffed at some point, so most tier lists with it being bad are most likely from a previous patch when it actually sucked. This definitely applied to Starlight as it only lasted 60 seconds initially, not it lasts three minutes.

@@dontmisunderstand6041 The damage wasn't the issue, iirc it was the lack of hyper-armor or a pitiful amount of hyper-armor for a spell that left you VERY exposed before being buffed (1.04, where it got more hyper-armor and improved recovery speed). The hyper-armor buff is what got the spell into a good place. Also with how fast a lot of the bosses are, it can be an issue.

@@AceAviations2 The spell has always done a good amount of poise damage at a rapid rate while charging it. It doesn't need hyper armor because you're not getting hit, you keep the enemy stunned by the continuous damage until the big boom. It was never meant to be a big damage boss killer. It's for handling melee mobs, something pure sorcerers struggle with.

Their damage with bleed is nothing to scoff at and their main advantage is allowing arcane builds to have a good option for super long range as well as aoe

I think a lot of these spells get called "the worst" because some of them take setup or are situational while others aren't just easy damage. Also I don't doubt that some people just don't want to experiment and have fun. If a game exists, there WILL be people who optimize the fun out of it for the sake of "efficiency."
