Can you beat Final Fantasy 1 with 4 Black Mages?

In this video you are going to see how I beat Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster with four black mages. I played this on the PC version, so it doesn't have the things added to the console release, not like I would have used those features anyway. Also I am using a PS4 controller, that's why you see those controls in the UI.
Forgive me for my terrible pronunciation, but I am not a native speaker, hope you won't mind too much.

I have actually done this on the Origins version. It was one of the most painfully grindy experiences of my entire life just for all the battles spent whittling down to one enemy and spamming the healing staff/helm so they had a chance of surviving.

Now this is a blast from the past. I first heard from the final fantasy games before I even ever played one; because of flash movies on newgrounds. At some point, I read the report of someone beating it with four white mages; stating, "Next time, she's going in solo!" at the end. ...though that never happened. Anyway, at some later point, I first experimented with emulators and played the first Final Fantasy. It was amazing, and I loved it. Some time after that, Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls appeared for the GBA, which was the very first time I actually bought a Final Fantasy game (and before some fool states something like "Uhhh, but emulating a game that you cannot possibly even buy is LITERALLY the same as theft!", no, it's not, as soon as I was able to buy it officially, I did. Also, back then, I was like 12 or 13 or so, so I received 10 EUR per month as pocket money. Buying a game for 40 EUR meant FOUR months of waiting time; unless Christmas or my birthday happened to be in that timespan) and man, did I love it. In a similar fashion, I also emulated FF IV, V and VI before later buying the re-releases, all on the GBA (the second game I already had, and the third I just never got to play). Either way, seeing that Black Mage sprite takes me back so hard. Watching all those flahs animations, and wondering just how it would feel to actually play that game. In an ironic twist of fate, I picked up FF XIV like two years ago, and don't like the black mage class in that game at all, haha.

If I remember correctly, the Black Mage gets the least health of all the characters, making them more likely to get 1 shot by the Kraken and Kraken 2 at lower levels. Another fantastic video!

Well done! It's a shame black mage becomes so weak late game. They are only worth to buff the warrior/ninja/monks of the party... That's why I usually go Red Mage instead 😅

I tried this on NES when I was kid in the 80s. Aside from how hard it was, the sheer cost of spells turned me off the idea. I gave up around the marsh cave, I think. Good work to you though! I’ve never seen your videos before, and I don’t why I had a FF video pop up in my feed, but as soon as I saw the thumbnail, I was excited!

On all ports you can farm the pisco demon marsh cave boss for exp just move off encounter square and then move back on repeat for tons of GP and EXP makes Elfheim grind super fast

Would love to see how much harder this is on the NES or PS1 version. The spells cost like 4x as much as in the Pixel Remaster, and from what I can see in this video vs. my own experience with the PS1 version the damage from spells seems WAY more consistent. I remember even high-level spells having an insane range of damage like 50-200, and in practice they seemed to low-roll constantly to the point that it was not really worth using. In comparison you're getting consistent 100+ damage values just from stuff like Fira.

@@brykanst9071 spells do less damage though on NES, as there is a programming glitch where magic damage doesn't scale with intelligence

@@brykanst9071The NES version is actually MORE difficult. Many of the spells for the black mage are glitched in the NES version. Further, you encounter much stronger enemies much sooner. You encounter sorcerers and mages in the ice palace, both of which can instantly KO party members. At that point in the game, those spells have a decent chance of success. You also can end up targeting an enemy, after you've already killed it, completely missing the attack; to avoid this you have to have each of your characters target a different enemy.

Ive beaten all the singie player FFs except part 1 Can't beat the final boss. I wasn't prepared when I got to the point of no return and by the time I get to that brutal dungeon I mever have enougj gas left in the tank. But I'm about to try it again in a few days after I finish beating part 4 for the 4th time

Yes do I recommend it HELL no even when doing a 4x exp run for the entire game 1 White Black mage + warrior and Monk by lv 99 I had ALL but the Black Mage at 999 HP I had the Black Mage at 940 max HP. But yes due to NOT having a actually MP state in this version of FF 1 I do NOT recommend doing a 4x Mage run UNLESS its the RED ones only.

This is about a billion times easier in the pixel remasters. Why, you ask? Because SquareEnix added ethers and phoenix downs to the game. Originally, there was no way to revive a downed party member, or restore spell charges, without going to a town. The white mage eventually could get life spells, but obviously that doesn't apply to this challenge. The pixel remaster also has much better healing items than the original game. Imagine trying to do this without all the modern conveniences added.

Worthless? Wait, don't tell me you made your life exponentially harder by not picking up Temper and Haste. Buffed melee damage VASTLY outpaces direct spell damage. Elemental spells are only good at low levels and for crowd control. Compared to Haste and a couple Tempers on one character, they suck vs bosses, even hitting elemental weaknesses. Pick up the Giant's Gauntlet for Saber and max out melee damage quickly.
