Can You Beat Ocarina of Time Without a Sword?

Adult Link doesn't have animations for using/holding Deku Sticks, so when he holds one, it looks up some nonsense instead and starts sending that nonsense to the graphic chip. On a real N64, the chip immediately gives up and stops and the whole game breaks. On Virtual Console and most unofficial emulators, it just ignores the nonsense. Some of it might happen to be valid commands, so you can get weird graphical bugs. Not sure why it would crash on an emulator. I guess it doesn't like whatever nonsense it happened to get in that area.

Basically, emulators don't bother to emulate crashes, because official games don't crash and you probably don't like crashes anyway. That works when the crash is because some weirdness gets detected (if invalid command then crash - emulators tend to ignore the command instead). If the crash is because the actual flow of the program got messed up, it can't be prevented so easily. Same thing is probably what causes the PU camera crash in Mario 64

Iirc it's crashing on a null pointer for the Deku Stick's display list (its model, as far as I understand it). The effects that show up are proper though, the Giant's knife overrides the deku stick breaking effect so it can do the same thing. Same reason why you can use the half-stick if you interrupt the put away

What's funny is that you can't damage bongo bongo with the hammer but you can actually down him with the slingshot if you fight him as young link. He'll even drop deku seeds instead of arrows.

I actually thought of a lore reason why the bosses in the Shadow temple can’t be harmed by anything other than the master sword - the undead can’t be harmed by things of the mortal realm. Of course, the Master Sword was made by the goddesses, and therefore it isn’t from the realm of the living!

I'm 2 weeks later but CHECK THIS OUT: if you use the deku nut on the bombchu you can explode the bombchu, so the Bongo Bongo could be easly defeated by it (i think)

I remember one time I fought Ganon in ocarina of time, I was wailing on him forever with my Biggoron sword, and the battle was never ending. I only was able to beat him after switching to the Master Sword. The game definitely wants you to use Master sword specifically for that last section.

Nice. I see a healthy amount of people have done this type of challenge run now. I did a 3-heart swordless run over 8 years ago and didn't come up with a solution for the Shadow Temple. Looking up someone else's run wasn't an option back then. I don't need to forever hate the Shadow Temple anymore. With that solution this game plays out very similarly to a swordless run of the original Zelda where you just need a sword for Ganon. Going to need to make an extra video now to point that out. I'll give you a shoutout while I am at it.

My cousins and I tried this about 7 years ago and we made it to bongo bongo. The way you defeat the monster with the arms from the ground is that you need to go to the corner with the pile of skulls and jump attack with the hammer, but we were never able to hurt bongo bongo'

When I saw the title I immediately knew the hiccup was going to be the final strikes on ganon. I only knew that because when I was younger and beating ganon for the second time I had the biggoron sword and decided I was going to beat him with that. I preceded to be in the boss fight for like half an hour til I was like f it what if I use the master sword for a hit and that caused Ganon to go down which then I realized they had coded it so that the master sword was necessary.

I am not how far you can go with this. But for the final boss you will need to use the Master Sword for the final hit on the 2nd final phase of the boss. Before going through the first dungeon you can get the Deku Stick upgrade which automatically gives you 20 Deku Sticks.

In the randomizers... You don't always have a sword as it's not considered needed, but the master sword has to be given to you regardless of choice. Playing Zelda without a shield is a practice I am used to as I keep forgetting you can block with it as I am used to crouch stabbing.

If you wrong warp to the tower collapse and fight ganon as child, you can use isg to get the last hit with your deku stick and then have the stick all glowy in the cutscene

I remember when I first played OOT on the Wii, back when you can own the vitual console stuff. I got the Big Goron sword and played through the entire game with it. I fought Ganon but the wanker just wouldn’t die and it was weird because that sword does MORE damage! Next day in school I tell my friend, I couldn’t kill Ganon for some reason. He then tells me that it HAS to be with the Master Sword and he was right lol. So yeah, that’s a no for this reason haha, you technically used the sword so rip :p

No shield (pressing R) run you'll make it to as far as the deku tree because you got to hit several deku scrubs making it impossible to beat the great deku tree
