In this challenge I attempt to beat Pokemon Red with only an Onix. Onix has always been a terrible Pokemon in generation one and so I wanted to see if it was possible to beat the game with only one. The results surprised me! Thanks to JRose11 for his awesome videos and the inspiration to start making these videos.
Like and subscribe if you enjoyed the run and would like to see more!
Thanks so much for watching.

I find it both hilarious and sad how weak onix is. Here's a fact: sentret and ditto have a higher attack stat than onix.
@Wildtrexkid
@Wildtrexkid 3 жыл бұрын
Onix suffered a terrible fate due to game design. the Devs were worried that a single stage standard statted Onix would be far too difficult as a challenge for the first gym. to make the Onix still a 'boss' they made it have great defence, but every other stat was massively nerfed to make it much easier for new players to beat. if they had only nerfed the onix Brock used it would've been fine, but instead they made ALL Onix have the terrible stats which is a shame. it means that you basically HAVE to use Steelix, cannot use Brock's Signature pokemon well(and just a cool pokemon on its own) and just in general leaves it bad for no other reason.

@@Katalowins Aerodactyl and Kabutops are both faster, Aero being one of the fastest and still is with its 130 speed putting it in the top like 30 today, but ya onix is 3rd out of gen 1 rocks, doesn't matter too much when his attack was that of a Pidgey so even if it outsped it didnt hurt the opponent. +10 to all stats except defence and a +30 or 35 in attack and Onix would be a solid single stage pokemon with a place compared to the Geodude and Rhyhorn lines as a viable ground/rock pokemon while also having later value as a not fully evolved pokemon. it would be a variable option with the other lines being slower but hitting much harder whilst onix had a tiny bit more defence and speed but didn't have the same firepower. the problem with the Steelix fix is it makes Onix redundant compared to Scyther and Scizor. Scizor is still waaayyy more powerful as a pokemon in general, BUT it doesn't make scyther totally useless AND scyther is actually faster than Scizor so if you wanted the speed it was something to at least give a reason to keep. Onix is around for ppl waiting to evolve it

I suppose it'd be more accurate to say 'physical' Rock type moves, then. Barring Z-moves and Dynamax moves which are limited use and never miss, Hidden Power Rock and Ancient Power are technically the only 'physical' Rock moves to both have 100% accuracy and 60 or more base power. They became 'special' moves in Generation IV, which is what all of the good 100% accurate Rock type moves currently are. Sure, we got Accelerock and Smack Down, but their base powers are fairly low. Accelerock is just a Rock type Quick Attack (sort of like Aqua Jet, Shadow Sneak, etc.) but only one Pokémon species can learn it, where Smack Down's secondary effect is very situational.

You definitely chose an easier option for the rival. He has hydro pump and blizzard, both relatively low accuracy and he uses Arcanine. With Venusaur he has 3 grass moves, one of which both recovers his health and has 100% accuracy and another will critical hit you every time. He also will have gyarados on his team.

@@Skylerrelyks93 The problem is that using screech would be dangerous. Any pokemon that is dangerous and you'd need the extra damage to kill before they kill you, giving them 1 free turn like screech would likely still result in you dying. The advantage of the badge boost is that you can find a weaker pokemon that's safe to setup against earlier in the fight that's not a threat to get a compounding 12.5% attack boost, allowing you to at *least* double your attack power (as you can apply it 7 times, 6 from Harden and once normally) giving the dangerous pokemon in question only 1 turn to attack instead of 2 like screech would allow.

He doesn't have an Arcanine in the fight before the Elite 4 because Growlithe is still only level 45. Growlithe learns Flamethrower at level 50. If he evolves Growlithe before level 50, Arcanine will not learn Flamethrower. That's why. Nice content On your decision to use dig over earthquake, it would make sense in later generations where NPC have PP but in gen1 they do have unlimited pp so there is no benefit else than the pleasure of making opponent miss moves (which is a valid enough reason to use dig over earthquake :p)
@altitudemanagement
@altitudemanagement 3 жыл бұрын
Reasons to use earthquake over dig 1) you could get statused- taking 2 turns to do damage means you'll take more poison or burn damage, have more chances to be paralyzed or hit yourself in confusion 2) opponent can use defensive moves like harden, amnesia, agility, swords dance, barrier, reflect, recover, substitute, mimic. 3) can charge a two turn move like Skull Bash or Solar Beam, or hit you with Hyper Beam before you go underground and recharge for free. Another turn for them to wake from sleep if you status them or they have rest. 4) you can still get hit by swift (I don't think earthquake hits in gen 1?) Reasons to use dig over earthquake 1) you can status them (except for sleep)
@jakerockznoodles
@jakerockznoodles 3 жыл бұрын
@@altitudemanagement Depends on whether you are playing against a person or AI. In both gen 1 Gameboy games and Stadium (3) can be used just as much to your advantage, consistently letting them set up a 2 turn move then ducking underground so they can't actually hit you. I was amazed playing Stadium about how dumb the computer could be in this regard, sometimes never hitting me at all because they insisted on using two turn moves that I could simply avoid. And certain trainers love of using explosion can make it even more hilariously useful. It's also a good stall tactic for after using toxic, especially as in the first Stadium, there was no way of using healing items. I believe Haze is the only way of removing afflictions like poison and paralysis in the first game because items weren't allowed and berries weren't a thing yet. Against actual people it's an incredibly flawed move, though, and earthquake would always be the better option.
@altitudemanagement
@altitudemanagement 3 жыл бұрын
@@jakerockznoodles good point about dodging two turn moves, which I guess should have stood out when I mentioned them getting a free recharge on Hyper Beam. If dig can dodge the recharge, it can certainly dodge the hit as well! Hyper Beam wouldn't need to recharge, but solar beam and skull bash certainly would look foolish! And of course you can dodge dig with dig as well.
@shanoc5902
@shanoc5902 3 жыл бұрын
@@altitudemanagement The moves with charge up turns will either fall in or out of dig's favor based on who's faster and depending on how things work out. In the case of Solarbeam, if Scott had given the Rival Bulbasaur Solarbeam probably would have been a big concern and thus waiting until he started charging for Solarbeam and then using dig would be a very good strategy, Onyx actually has pretty good speed given how a lot of these challenges go, so when you add in the higher level advantage and the speed Stat experience (the Gen 1 and 2 version of EVs) they would have, Onyx would typically outspeed giving Dig a good tactical advantage against Venasaur, but a bad match-up against the Execute fights.

There's a handful of pokemon with stats like that. Nosepass is another one, along with very likely Miltank. Nearly every single stage pokemon that features prominently on the team of a leader, Elite 4, champ, or rival kinda falls into the category, really. Honestly, pseudos before Goodra as well (with the odd exception of Tyranitar), mostly have types and stats more suited to be an ultimate boss pokemon used by endgame trainers, that ostensibly resist and counter the starters, even if in practice that doesn't often play out. Especially Garchomp, which is also precisely statted to beat Palkia and Dialga in a vacuum.

Actually, the elemental monkeys and Bombirdier also fit this role. As for the trend of Gym 1 aces sucking, Teddiursa dodges this, and that is less that Teddiursa is that good and more that Teddiursa attacks hard and is in a competitively-minded region that thinks to combo Tera Bug with Fury Swipes. Even then, the Teddiursa line is a fluke amidst Gym 1 aces, and Teddiursa isn’t single stage anyways, and Katy specifically prefers using Ursaring anyways.

So Giovanni uses guard spec, to my knowledge, is mainly to prevent people from using sand attack, screech, etc and with his type selection to make poisoning and paralyzing him impossible, so the only status effects you can do are to yourself and can't rely on paralysis and toxic to beat him. Gives the idea that it's an unfair fight by removing a lot of different strategies if you don't have good type matches.

Game Design, Devs were worried Onix would be too powerful and hard to beat for the first gym so they made its stats awful in everything but defence, so it would still seem tough to beat cuz it tanks damage, but doesn't do any so its a terrible single stage. they 'fixed' it with Steelix, but it leaves Onix still as totally awful. at least with Scyther/Scizor you can actually make a choice since Scyther still does decently on its own and actually has higher speed than Scizor for a reason to keep it unevolved. just wish they only made Brock's Onix have the terrible stats and leave the others more balanced, they have made special exceptions for stats in this generation since the Yellow Version Pikachu basically has a Light Ball, the stats are very boosted and when traded forward to Gen 2 it comes with a Light Ball ^^.

I think you are thinking of getting fully paralyzed while in the semi-invulnerability turn of dig. I have heard of that triggering invulnerability in gen 1. EDIT: You are right that confusion damage can trigger it. However, I read about it, and it turns out that using dig again cancels the invulnerability affect since it counts as a "charging move." I think rock moves in general have lower accuracy for balancing reasons, at least originally, rock is one of the most offensively strong types in the game, only being resisted by steel, ground and fighting, and having no type immune to it. Rock types can often be found early on in the game as well unlike other strong offensive types like dragon or ice, still it does seem insane that they've kept it this way to this day.

I always was a little enthralled with Onix. I don't know why, but I always had to have one when I played the game, its terrible stats notwithstanding. Maybe it's just the thought of having a giant snake made of rocks, or the fact that Brock's Onix was so frustrating to beginners. But it's really not a bad member to a team, since its high defense allows it to really take a physical hit. It's just those special moves that are so bad, especially water, ice or grass.

Another factor that really adds to its mystique is the fact that it's pretty rare in the caves. Gives the impression that it's going to be a real powerhouse.

Yep, Water attacks are devastating to Onix. They’re all Special Attacks and Onix’s Special is pretty low. Plus it’s 4x weak to Water, so even small hits are DEVASTATING. Surprised you could topple Misty below Lv 40!
@iantaakalla8180

What even made it possible was Onix’s decent speed because Onix could start to outspeed Starmie. Had Onix had bad speed, that Misty fight may have stopped him for much longer.

Had to correct my previous comment about Growlithe. In gen 1, it learns Flamethrower at level 50. I said level 49 because I was remembering how it was in the Fire-Red/Leaf-Green Gen 3 remakes.
